On that language note, I sort of want to take a language class at Portland State if I can fit it in somehow (nothing intense though...).

I took Italian at PSU a few years ago. It was super chill, especially if you don't care about your grade. Our final was at another students house (it was an evening class so most people were older in the class) and we cooked dinner and drank wine while being "tested" on our italian 🙂

Haha sounds great, I was thinking of brushing up on my 5+ years of Spanish, from my experience in various emergency departments it would seem like a SUPER handy and useful language to know...

It may be an exercise in futility at this point (do they even have any more interview slots to award?), but does anyone know how to send OHSU updates? I can't find an email address anywhere, and am hard pressed to believe that all correspondance with the school has to be via snail mail.

Today is officially the 8 week point!!! (for the dec 31st interviews)

I thought they said that we would know in 6-8 weeks.

O - "O" how I want to find out
H - "H"ow about telling me
S - "S"end me my letter
U - "U"se a stamp

At work, I had a random thought, how come nobody pronounces OHSU as "Oh-sooo"? 🙄

Have you called?

Yeah, one of my best friends and old college roommate from Jersey keeps on calling it "Oh-soo"

No.

I was under the impression that they did not allow or like to give status checks over the phone

djyujin called and they told him he got accepted over the phone. two days later he got the official email. i'm in the same boat as you...not quite at the point of calling, but checking my email whenever I can..

Yes I did, you should definitely call somebody if it's been over 8 weeks. I remember also reading in this thread earlier that somebody's interview invitation was placed in the junk e-mail folder on accident. Maybe you guys should see if its in your junk e-mail folder?

In your interview packet, there's a list of contacts, Katy and Debbie in the admissions office. I called them. Good luck! 👍

I just called the admissions office inquiring about my app. I was complete on 10/13. I asked if a dec has been made since maybe the email went to spam and I deleted it or the snail mail was lost. They told me I am on hold for interview and the dean or someone is reviewin the hold applicants to see if they get an interview and that I should hear something soon in a week or two. Don't know if I heard the last part correctly. Good luck to the rest of us waitin for invites.

not fluently but i was a french minor and i'm hoping to be fluent...someday...🙂

excellent! well maybe if we are both lucky we'll have someone to practice with. none of my friends speak.

Uhh...

CRB 717, I think one of us should call.

NOT IT.

okay then tell me how it goes😀

Talbo, thanks for posting this. My gf is in the same boat that youre in so any news is always welcomed. Thanks again and good luck to you and everyone waiting for an interview. I'll be rooting for you!!

I interviewed on December 31st so I could call also...

Not it...

It's all up to CRB717

My goodness, we have been posting on a ton of the same threads as of late DrWookie.

Anyway...CRB717 it looks as though it is all up to you buddy.

I'm just posting a lot in general as of late...

I really don't want to do work for any of my classes. I have totally graduated already in my head, which isn't really good considering I have a thesis to finish and write. I'm actually in lab right now...

I see how it is fellas! I am tempted to call but if we're all still waiting, I figure its not unusual. Just the normal OHSU delayed timeline...

plus I'm sure theres a random lurker or two here that interviewed with us. 😀

have you guys tried sifting through the junk mail folders on your respective e-mail accounts? when i called in i was told that our e-mails for the end of Dec. were being sent out ... (when I heard back, which is Feb. 13th).

as for lurkers, i definitely know at least one or two of my friends who are obsessively checking the class of 2013 FB group and all OHSU related threads on SDN. 😀 so i can definitely understand CRB's reluctance to call in first...

still, check junk mail folders, and if it potentially got deleted i would definitely call in... just my $.02.

good luck!

-edit-

there is also someting like 38k views for only ~600 posts... there are definitely more than just a FEW lurkers... 🙂

Hey, so I am one of the lurkers... I found out on Monday I was accepted (!!!) and I interviewed during inauguration week. 😍

Hey Congratulations Snizzle Pants! When did you interview Mr. Lurker/Ms. Lurker? 😀

WHAT THE HECK!

you interviewed mid to late January?

Okay CRB717 and DrWookie, looks like one of us NEEDS to call tomorrow, no backing out.

NOT IT!!!

DAMN it. late by 7 minutes lol.

I'll call...but I will be all over the place tomorrow. The student org. I founded is hosting a giant fundraiser so I will be busy all day...no guarantees. Perhaps Monday.

Congrats snizzle pants.

At work, I had a random thought, how come nobody pronounces OHSU as "Oh-sooo"? 🙄

haha, kind of along the same lines, if you say OHSU really fast, emphasizing the "H", it sounds like a sneeze.

has anyone been rejected post-secondary? i think it was brought up somewhere but i don't remember, thanks!

Okay so I just "manned up" and called the office. Their normal number is a machine talking about how they only want to speak with you if you have an "urgent" something rather, so I instead tried calling Katy (The number given in our interview emails).

She didn't answer 🙁

For the people who have called to find out, who did you call?

+1 for manning up DrWookie! 👍

I think on the interview sheet it says if there are any concerns after the interview that you should call Debbie Melton... good luck!

I actually called today too DrWookie. I got the machine as well.

The message at the start really tries to scare people away from getting a status check hunh?

Does anyone have any super awesome tips for interview day at OHSU? 😀

Call Debbie or Katy. I always got my status checks from Katy back when I interviewed...and it does take a while for her to pick up, so just keep trying.

Haha sounds great, I was thinking of brushing up on my 5+ years of Spanish, from my experience in various emergency departments it would seem like a SUPER handy and useful language to know...

In past years they have offered a medical spanish class at OHSU in the evenings, several of my classmates took this (it is offered at the intermediate and advanced levels I think, so you have to have some spanish ability to begin with but not fluency). If you complete the advanced portion I believe you can be certified so you can act as a translator for your patients in the hospital, which will definitely come in handy in your clinical years. You totally have the time to do this first and second years, and I wish I had.

Thanks for the congratulations! I hope yall get good news soon... maybe i heard earlier cuz i applied to one of the dual degree programs and maybe their application process goes a little differently.?. Quién sabe

out of curiosity, which dual degree program?

Hey can anyone shed some light on the parking situation on campus? Is it pretty easy to find a spot if you get a visitor pass? Thanks!

If you have a visitor pass it will be pretty easy (because there is lots of designated parking)...On the other hand, if you do not have a visitor pass you are pretty much out of luck because all the parking around campus is either on a meter or 2 hour parking max.

I know some of the students said you can rent out a parking space in somebody's driveway because parking is so scarce on Pill Hill.

Parking on campus is far from fun. The easiest thing to do is to look for someone selling a parking spot at the beginning of the year - those spots are usually at apartment complexes, etc close to the school. Other than that...students are not allowed to park in visitor parking anywhere on campus, and several of my classmates have been ticketed, towed, or both because they parked in visitor parking.

One other good option would be to bike to campus. The school has an incentive program where they give you money after you ride you bike to campus a certain number of times (I think it's about $40 for 30 days? Something like that?). You can even drive halfway, find long-term parking (there is some 8 hour parking down by the tram), and then bike the rest of the way.

I took this elective in the fall, and absolutely loved it. The class requires a placement test (so you actually have to know conversational spanish to take it), but if you qualify, it covers everything from anatomical terms to common questions and commands that come up during a history and physical. Also, as MistressS said, if you take the course at the advanced level, you are certified as an interpreter after your final test.

I know there has been some fighting for funding amongst the OHSU electives, and I have heard rumors that only the advanced section will be offered next year. But don't lose hope, the students are fighting to keep the class around. 🙂

Monday, I'm on it.

I interviewed on Jan 6th and just called last week and found out I'm on hold. I called the number on the website, but it took a couple of times to get someone after that crazy long message. I'm hopeful though, even though I don't know how far down the list I am. I'm a current employee of OHSU though so it sucks because I deal so much with the university everyday and just want to get in. I haven't heard anything about post-interview rejections, but I do know a lot of people who applied there a second time and got in. To any of you out there who did apply a second time and got in, what did you do in that year?

I got into the MD/MPH program. 😛

I have a question about the medical spanish/interpreting thing: If you become certified as an interpreter, are you able to work/volunteer around town/at the hospital with that??
