yeah...ha..imagine getting accepted tomorrow and then them saying..."well you have 1 day to make plans to be here for 2nd look":laugh::laugh:

well she said that there would be no more admission offers until the waitlist... what does everyone think??

I live in SF and got my Alternate List letter yesterday.

"The Committee on Admissions is pleased to inform you that you have been selected as an alternate for the 2009 entering class. The Committee has been greatly impressed with your credentials and regrets that the press of applicants prevents us from being able to offer you an immediate position in the class. We hope to be able to do so before the admissions cycle is complete.

Our alternate list remains active until the commencement of school on Sept 8th. It is difficult to determine your chances of admission, since the number of applicants accepted from the alternate list varies each year. However, we will notify you immediately if a position in the class becomes available to you. It will not be possible to give you more definitive information regarding your place on the AL."

Is this the same letter that other people have been getting? It seems to quite possibly be the most encouraging wait list notification of all time, but I still dont want to get my hopes up. I was looking forward to some closure, but I guess I can deal with my hopes still being alive.

congrats! yeah that does sound quite encouraging.
I have not heard anything yet

Wow! I agree, that's definitely the nicest waitlist letter I've ever read!

It does sound like they sincerely want to accept the ppl on the AL and it's simply a matter of too many ppl for too few spots.

I'm crossing my fingers for you guys! 🙂

That's identical to the letter I got. Yay for a nice form letter ...

Despite it being a very nice letter, I would have loved a little more information (how many people are on the alternate list, approximate or exact number i am on the list, how many people usually get in off the alternate list, etc) but oh well.

Good luck everybody. :xf:

Someone got into PRIME...

I haven't been following whats been going on with the PRIME applicants, but I thought that might be useful info to somebody?

There are quite a number of people at a revisit I went to who are sitting on UCSF and another school. Chances are, there will be some who will give up their UCSF spots, so people in the AL--hang tight!

it's been fun guys...got my rejection letter in the mail today 🙁

a departing toast to all of those who even made it this far...and much congrats to those who will have the opportunity to attend such an amazing school!

🙂

I have no idea - I just got a facebook message that said "i got into PRIME!!!" so that's all I know, haha.

Does anybody have any estimates of how many people are put on the alternate list?

I don't really understand the move from being on the HP WL to the Alternate List... 😕

Just received my Alt letter today. Interviewed Dec, HP list March

Acceptance, hopefully sometime soon =)

I've been away at a second look weekend. I returned to find the following in my mailbox:

I found the UCSF letters to be the nicest/warmest ones out of all the schools.

"We greatly appreciate the interest that you have shown in entering the School of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco. Unfortunately, however, we shall not be able to offer you a position for the entering class of 2009.

This letter is being sent to you reluctantly because the Committee on Admissions is fully appreciative of your fine record, one in which you can take great pride. This rejection does not mean that we believe you to be unqualified to attend this or any other School of Medicine on either personal or scholarly grounds or that we think that you will not become a fine physician. It simply reflects the enormous competitive pressure of highly qualified applicants for the limited number of positions here.

I hope that you will be successful in your application to other medical schools and that you will have a rewarding career in medicine."

Of course it's a form letter, but I really appreciate how encouraging UCSF's language has been even when the news is not what you are hoping for.

I am glad that I am out of limbo and the wait is over. Warm regards to all of you, future colleagues!

"Since it falls unto my lot that I should follow a different call,
fill me to the parting glass. Goodnight and joy be with you all."

apple a day

hey kids -- i just got home from vacation to find my alternate list letter as well... ucsf really does have a way with words. does anyone know anything concrete about percentage of the waitlist that gets accepted? i thought i had heard around 50% but don't know if that's too high...
in any case, best wishes to all of you wherever we all end up!!

bump!

five days till 5/15!

anyone get late news? or any thoughts on the AL?

cried everyday over this crazy difficult decision for almost 2 months...

i hope to return to UCSF in 2013. Good luck everyone, and enjoy my lovely San Francisco!

somehow i've been putting this out of my mind, but now i'm getting worried again which makes me crave information.

has anyone found out anything about:
-length of the alternate list
-how many students they have taken historically
-how they notify people accepted off the alternate list (email, snail mail, etc)

:xf:good luck everybody!

I don't know, but you could try calling the office to ask. I don't know how candid they can be with you, but it's worth a shot, right? :luck:

ahhh i feel your pain. so, this is all from going over last year's thread (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=498069&page=10), so take it with a grain of salt:

- length: about 100 people
- eventually accepted AL: about 50 (half of AL)
- notification: most people receive snail mail, unless it's getting close to the start of classes...

also, all of that was thanks to ariodant, so thanks man!

sorry for being the god-awfully annoying constant poster, but did anyone take shemarty's advice and call the admissions office? any news to report?

I called. They seemed a little annoyed and quite curtly answered "We do not release that kind of information" when I asked about the length of the alternate list or how many people are typically selected from it.

They did say that they send regular mail to people to inform them that they have been accepted off of the alternate list.

I'm guessing most of you have read the thread from last year that was linked by Appleaday (you should, it's moderately insightful), but if not, it looks like the most waitlist movement will happen in the late 20s of May. They send out acceptances to let's say 10 students (no idea on the real number). Some of those students will accept, some wont, and they'll send out acceptances about a week later to fill the rest of the spots. Then this cycle repeats. According to last year's posts, the last acceptance was around July 25th. I start at Case Western on July 9th, so I'm just praying I dont get a piece of mail on July 10th saying "hey, come to UCSF", or I'm going to punch someone in the face.

Wow, I thought I had it bad starting school July 22...Knowing that UCSF could potentially pull people off the alternate list until Sept 7 has been killing me.

UCSF has a list of applicants who are on the WL, and they can also see where each of those applicants are currently holding an acceptance. So when they make their offers off the WL, they know "this student is going to Case," for example. They're only allowed to make offers to students on the WL who have not yet begun school yet.

Statistically speaking, it's more advantageous to be holding an acceptance to a school with a later start date if you're hoping to be accepted off of another schools WL.

So, your punch-someone-in-the-face scenario can't actually happen.

:xf: I hope you get off the WL!! :xf:

I wonder if that (where you're planning on matriculating) makes a difference in their decision at all...

I wonder too...

Are they more likely to offer a spot to a student going to Harvard (theoretically a more desirable student, but the student is less likely to accept the offer) or are they more likely to offer the spot to a student who's holding zero acceptances elsewhere (theoretically a less desirable student, but the student is much more likely to accept the WL offer).

I would guess the latter once they are on the WL. Also, are OOS at UCSF at a significant disadvantage?

wow lolllll........2011 applicant on the 2009 thread. Better to be informed then not I guess haha

UCSF has a list of applicants who are on the WL, and they can also see where each of those applicants are currently holding an acceptance.

I have always wondered about this, so all the schools can see where the WL ppl have acceptances at? it almost seems unfair n stupid just cause it adds another dimension to the subjectivity of the process... on the other hand if they accept you and can view where else you have been accepted that would make sense.

Well they need to know which school to inform that they're trying to steal you away from. Also it wastes a lot of time if its September and the person they want to accept has already started school elsewhere.

My guess is they pick someone, and then look up whether their school has started (or maybe have some sort of system that deletes people once they have attended orientation, synced to AMCAS all fancy-like). But I would be surprised if they even look at this info before making their choice - at this point they have SO much info on each applicant that they don't really need this extra tid-bit.

It seems to be that schools really value their own process - ie they each think they have the best way of picking their class, so I doubt they think "oh Harvard liked them, they must be awesome". Also, they can't tell from looking at the last acceptance you are holding if you turned down a higher ranked school for more $$ somewhere else, so it seems pretty meaningless, as you could argue someone holding a full-ride might be even more likely to turn them down than someone planning on being 300k in the hole for Harvard.

Also, I doubt many people on UCSF's WL are not holding any acceptances.

From last year's thread, it looks like most wait list movement happens in the first 6 weeks after May 15th, so unless your school starts reeeeaaaally early, I doubt it that where you are matriculating influences your odds significantly for that reason either.

also, in case any of you are curious and/or need some comic relief, i called the admissions office yesterday and spoke to someone (not nancy!) about whether any acceptances had been mailed or when they would begin to be mailed:

"Hmmm... I don't THINK anything has been mailed yet, but probably some will be in the next week or two. It'll be a slow trickle through July probably."

haha I was expecting something along those lines... classic.

Do schools you are accepted off the waitlist from actually notify your current acceptance that they are trying to steal you away?

I'm not certain. I thought there was some communication between the schools, but I'm not entirely sure how it works.

INNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Accepted off of the high priority WL. Wow. This just got incredibly difficult.......UCLA or UCSF.
