Understandable - I guess it's never fun to feel like you're repeating unhappy history.

But maybe first on the waitlist is first off the waitlist! :xf:

The funny thing is I was the first on the thread to be waitlisted last year as well. It's kinda hard not to read into everything.....

But now at least I think people will start hearing things. And I think no news is probably still good news for many since it is only 4.13.

Sorry about the waitlist news, jka. 🙁

It's definitely tempting to read into the very elusive process that is medical school admissions (I'm completely guilty of this). Although nothing is definite, try to focus on the positives: much of the class will come in off of the waitlist and, assuming you've improved your application somehow from last year, you still have a great chance of getting good news. I understand you're disappointed but try not to lose faith now as this is definitely the time to show UMass (again) how much you want to go there and what you'll bring to the table.

Just got on the wait list too. I feel ya now, it truly doesn't feel quite right. neither good nor bad. 3rd waitlist for me too... i was really hoping for acceptance...at least we heard back!

Does the status page change at all if you are waitlisted? I still haven't gotten an email - hopefully that doesn't mean a rejection letter is coming. :scared:

Quick question, is it best to send a letter stating that you wish to remain considered and then a letter of intent, or is one letter best???

Sorry to hear about your wait-lists, jka and chocolateMD and MadMnkey! I have a feeling mine will be coming soon. Given that UMass doesn't over-accept, a wait-list isn't a bad thing at all, but it still must suck to interview, wait a couple months, and then be told "Oh hey, why don't you wait some MORE?"

So the general feeling right now is: sucks to get waitlisted, terrifying not to be waitlisted? I don't know what to think!

All I know is that I basically vomit every time I look up and see Inbox (1) on my gmail tab. But then it's just this.

Thanks Chocolate. Congrats (I think) on getting waitlisted.

I'm not sure which approach is best, but I sent an update letter which concluded with a paragraph stating that UMASS is my top choice and that I would absolutely go there if accepted (I also included copious amounts of butt-kissing). So, I guess I sent a combo "letter of intent"/update

It is good news, although frustrating to not have a definitive answer and the wait continues for you, but at least there is a light....

It seems like this was a big batch of waitlists earlier than last year if I recall...though that is all dependent on people posting. This year's thread is already much more active than last year.

So since second look is on April 24-25, I would expect there will be more waitlists/acceptances after that...

I guess there are a few ways to read into this for those of us intent on fortune telling based on emails and innuendo (and feel free to add your own hypothesis) in no way does the following purport to be the truth, it's just for fun so don't take it too seriously:

1. Those waitlisted now are on the top of the waitlist and will be the first to hear back once others, already accepted, decide not to go. Soon, you'll be just like this guy:

2. Those waitlisted are near the top of the waitlist, but UMass has some "other people" that are higher priority. Those "others" will get acceptances BEFORE those who just got waitlisted get accepted. The reason the "others" got no news was because UMass expects a fair amount of people to drop in the next few weeks - thus the "others" will get acceptance right away. This puts the present waitlisted people near the top of waitlist, but not quite in reality at the top as those "others" could get in front of them-make sense?

3. Those waitlisted are near the bottom of the waitlist and UMass has figured they are least likely to move all the way to acceptance and therefore gave them an earlier waitlist. Umass may have based this on previous years movement, and figures (As in #2) that there are "others" they will accept first and then "other others" that will get waitlisted based on movement. This means they already have a rejection list drawn up but may yet through a few of the "R" people into "waitlist" territory based on movement.

Does anyone think it might be a good idea to track who interviewed when, what the outcome was, and date of notification? I know how much we all love to read older threads hoping to glean something that looks like a meaningful pattern. Just a thought, feel free to ignore...

Are you guys nuts? When I got waitlisted last year I was jumping up and down from joy. Look at it this way: 450 interview, and 125 get a straight up acceptance, lets say out of the remaining 325, half get waitlisted and half get rejected (seems reasonable from what I can remember)- That makes about 160 on the WL. Historically, 50-60 have come from the WL, and that does not include the unknown number of people who get off the WL but decline. Bottom line: Congrats to those WL'ed and hang in there- I'm sure many of you guys will have good news in the coming weeks.

What really terrifies me is that EVERYONE was wailisted on the same day last year. Although, that day was 4/25 which was after second look? Correct? Still, pretty scary. There were two random people accepted after the waitlist went out...but the chances of that being me...

UMass blows. Slash it doesn't at all. But if I get rejected after like 5 months of waiting I'm going to (un)spontaneously combust.

If the class is full and several people are on the waitlist, then any spot that opens up will go to them. So anyone who has not heard a decision at this point should have a slight chance of acceptance I guess. I interviewed in March and no decisions.

Maybe this is just wishful thinking, but I highly doubt that UMass would reject people who aren't first put on the wait-list, especially after waiting this long post-interview. what do you guys think? It just doesn't make any sense to make people wait this long to get outright rejected without even being ranked and placed on a wait-list. That's my $0.02!

Any thoughts?

Mmmm.....I don't think that the MD/PhD class technically "fills up." If I remember back to what Dr. Androphy had said, he mentioned that the number of people they admit to the MD/PhD program really hinges on the number of people that get admitted overall. So, if the med school fills, but they've only admitted 5 people to the MD/PhD program, then the MD/PhD class for that year will be 5. However, if people begin to decline the spots in the med school, and there's an MD/PhD that's "next in line" for admissions, then they'll be admitted. So I guess, long story short, the MD/PhD admissions really hinges on the number of slots opened in the whole class....I think.....so to then answer your question, I think if the reg MD program is filled, then the MD/PhD can't admit anymore either.....🙁

Also, I feel like I shoulda seen this coming. My old PI essentially told me I was going to be waitlisted....I'm gonna now go and hound him to see what else he knows:meanie: (evil laughter).

ok so here is the list that people made from last year, it looks like there was one big batch of waitlists all on one day... an rejections about 1 week or so later.

Don't know what that means for this year as the waitlist is two weeks earlier - and BEFORE second look. I think there will still be some movement... but maybe not much... regardless, we'll meet the smoke monster soon...

I second this, big time. 50% of interviewees get into Umass - those are some of the best odds out there. I know how sucky it is to be waitlisted, but I really believe that it may just be a few week wait (until people get Finaid packages). It's not time to lose hope yet. I'm rooting for you all!

I'm pulling for you guys... I'm 99% sure I'll be at UMass in August, and the thought of attending without each of the posters on this thread is a sad one... the fun and relatively mellow (well, at least non-inflammatory) attitudes here have me looking forward to being a part of this class! Come on UMass... Good karma should be rewarded, right?
