I'd be willing to call tomorrow. I have a few other questions for them as well so I might as well ask as much as I can. Anyone else have anything they'd like to know?:)

Hey MadMnkey -- were you able to get any MD/PhD-specific info out of them? I feel like there can't possibly be too many people that are still going to withdraw from such a small program at this point ...grrr. But thanks for calling! :)

So I just talked to the admissions at UMass and they just repeated their spiel. They said there is still movement on the wait list, but they don't know how much and that there is always the possibility of hearing something up until the first day of class in August. Also, apparently after a certain date, people pulled off the wait list will only have 24 hrs to decide to accept or not, so the list will probably slow down at that point. They also wouldn't tell me if the class was currently full yet, although the person did say that the week after May 15th always has a lot of fluctuation and lots of people withdraw and move around as they hear from other schools :p.

I asked about the MD/PhD, and they said it follows the same process as the MD admissions, whatever that means.

We would all really appreciate if all the people who just look at this thread would post their application status. We are not asking names, stats or any confidential information. Just when you were waitlisted and whether you have heard back.
Having as much information here as we can would be only helpful to us and future applicants.
It is only fair :)
Peace

Also, we can se how many guests and members are on the thread at any given time ;)

Although stats, should you choose to include them, would be much appreciated and would also contribute to the statistical robustness of any predictive modeling that anal retentives such as myself might attempt :D

I hope all of you wait-listed folks hear some good news this week!

Wow, I'm kinda surprised that so many people were wait listed, but so few have been accepted. I guess the economy did actually play a large role in the decisions this year.....sigh.:(

Now hang on a second, cowboy;) No need to be overly glum yet!

- UMass matriculants who happen to post on SDN are a small and not-necessarily-representative sample. We don't know the size of the waitlist, or how many people have been accepted off of it so far; we only know the people who post on this thread about it.
- It's only May 27th. The waitlist can be utilized up until classes start, which gives you plenty of time. I'm sure there are plenty of accepted people who will choose to go elsewhere when they get off a wait-list, especially if their aid package is good.
- As far as state schools go, UMass is pretty competitive (I believe I've complained about this before). This is pure speculation on my part, but if you look at a school like the University of Kansas, I would be fairly confident that a decent number of those students only got into U of K because it was fairly easy to get into. However, at a place like UMass that is much more competitive, more people will have multiple acceptances. When I crashed second look, I only met one person who ONLY got into UMass. Basically, the people who UMass accepts tend to have choices. Maybe they will all choose UMass, maybe not.

So fear not! And try not to extrapolate too much from the small amount of data that is available to us.

Are any accepted students bringing significant others/parents/guests to orientation on saturday?

I was wondering the same thing. I was going to bring my boyfriend, but then decided against it so that I could just meet everyone myself.

yeah, i was going to bring my boyfriend, too, but i thought he'd like the tour but being there all day and possibly on to boston billiards was too much to ask. it would make me uncomfortable if he wasn't having a good time. i wish i could bring my mom, though. she'd relish in every second. what are you going to wear? business casual?

Hi guys

I am going to show up for the morning stuff by myself wearing regular clothes. Then my hubby and kids were going to come for the barbecue.

Jeans for sure. They are pretty casual over there.

Scrubs -

Are you definitely coming to umass then?

i'm bringing my own car from boston, and my parents are meeting me there for the tour and stuff. Definitely just wearing normal clothes, nothing fancy. As i said on the facebook page, if anybody needs a ride out west let me know!

Any news?! I was hoping we would hear back before the orientation tomorrow

hey guys sorry i havent kept to up to date with posts but i read yours all he time. i just got accepted of the WL and couldnt be happier. i interviewed in september, got wl'd 04/13 and just got the notice through email. i cant make orientation because i literally just walked out of surgery (on me) and cant drive. im very excited to meet you all and for those on the WL stay patient. i wish you all the very best.

Meech, did you learn today (Friday)? Did you check your status before, or just notice by email? I'm just curious because the days of the week that they are accepting people off the WL seem to be different each time..

CONGRATS meech! That is great! Did you update them or sent extra LOR since receiving your waitlist?
All the best with your post-op!

Hi everyone,

This is my first post here.
Could anyone please tell me how to find Umass secondary threads from previous years?
I just want to know up to when acceptances from the WL occur and if I should keep my hopes up or not.
I was thinking we would see many acceptances from the WL after may 15. Obviously, it has not been the case.

Thanks

Good call on not bringing sand to the beach  j/k...i brought my gf last year (she ended up napping in the lounge)

hey marcBR, do a search on the forums for umass accepance 2008 (or watever year you want) and click on the lnks labeled archives. that indcates threads from previous years. i know the WL will continue to move until the first day of class so keep holding on. all the best.

Quick question, but I remember reading somewhere that schools can no longer accept any student that has begun class at another medical school or started orientation activities. Has anyone else heard something like that?:)

MadMnkey, the was a meeting last fall in which the AAMC tried (unsuccesfully) to implement separate MD/PhD "traffic rules." From the AAMC website, the proposed MD/PhD and actual MD rule is:

"Offers cannot be extended to students who have enrolled in, or begun orientation at, another program or medical school."

Another interesting note: "After June 1, schools should notify other schools if they plan to offer acceptance to a student holding an acceptance at another school." I'm not sure how this works, since schools aren't supposed to be able to see where else you've been accepted until they actually accept you, and they can't see waitlists at all ... unless there is a monster (and probably super crazy) master list that every school gets. Hmm, I'm not sure, but hopefully the reason for it is to facilitate waitlist movement! :xf: Hope this helps!

To anyone who has sent in all their financial aid info while on the wait list:

I can't seem to find WHERE to send this stuff (despite the pages and pages of instructions, maybe I'm just missing it). Did you send it to the financial aid office at 55 Lake Avenue North? Also, did you send it through certified mail? Giving out all this personal info makes me nervous.

Thanks and sorry if bumping this thread gave anyone a heart attack.

Hi Iheartsnow,
I mailed the financial aid packet with regular mail to:
University of Massachusetts Medical School
Financial Aid Office
55 Lake Avenue North
Worcester, MA 01655

This is a recap of orientation I PM'd to someone - I don't claim it's great, it was a scattered day for me. Hopefully other people can correct me if I left something out or forgot something.

------

I definitely wouldn't say there was a full class there, but it's hard to estimate how many people there were because a lot of people brought parents and SOs.

The day was pretty short actually. They started off with some housing presentations from local buildings and complexes, which I actually missed because I was running late. I'm also not planning on living in a complex, but some of them seem quite nice - if you get in and need names and stuff I can give them to you. After that we had welcome speeches that talked about the curriculum and other "rah rah" UMass things from the various deans. I was flipping through the roommates handout at that point. The class of 2012 then told us about more housing info, safe neighborhoods, finding roommates, that sort of thing. I again wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to the neighborhood info because I know that I am going to live right next to school since I won't have a car. (Which, btw, they discussed and is possible, though not ideal. Plenty of people walk to school in the morning, and there are benefits to not having to deal with parking/driving in the winter.) The majority of people either live in the complexes or right next to school. Some people live at home, and some commute.

We then had a lunch with current students and were paired with buddies from the class of 2012.

After lunch was a whole collection of presentations by current students:

Transitioning to medical school: the message here seemed to be "it's not so bad." They emphasized the fact that you can have a life, and that UMass does their best to make the transition gentle. They also stressed that everyone finds their own way of studying and such, some people go to class, others don't. Pretty much everyone goes to class for the first semester at least.

Diversity/Underrepresented: this panel focused on the fact that people didn't feel like they had been treated any differently due to skin color/ethnicity/sexual orientation. The panel had one gay hispanic, 3 blacks, and one gay white person. The URMs that I talked to definitely said the school's a white-ass place, but that the community itself has diverse populations to work with. The gay folks I know there haven't had any problems. Presumably if you're from MA you're used to it, on both counts.

Life as a non-trad: People with families talked about how they balance it (they trade social opportunities for time with their families). A few people commute from Boston and suburbs. That sounds like hell to me, but they have their reasons.

Longitudinal Preceptor Program: this is the program where you get matched up with a doc right from the get go, and shadow them throughout the years. One person was matched with a FP (which is who most people get matched with), another an ER doc. FP is more desirable because you get better interview practice, just due to the nature of the ER work - the FP is more supervised so you get better feedback. ER sounds more fun to me though.

Getting involved: this panel was on the various ECs available. There are a TON, ranging from specialty/population interest groups, to various types of volunteer work, to athletic options (IM, plus adult worcester leagues for soccer, volleyball, basketball etc). Some of the panelists had started their own things too; one guy, for example, was doing therapy with autistic kids.

MOE: the trip right before classes start - camping/hiking/rafting in ME. They just discussed logistics and encouraged everyone to come. It's a 3 day dealio, $120 all-inclusive. Different levels of hiking, or you can just hang out at the campsite. One day of rafting on the Kennebeck. I've actually been to the campground it's at before; it's across the street from a bar and there's live music most nights. Kind of a funny kind of camping.

Life in Worcester: they discussed the various parks, Wachusett mountain, various restaurants, concert halls etc. Essentially the message was, it's Worcester, but it's not as bad as you think. And I think they're right. I'm going to miss Boston quite a bit, but it will be nice to be closer to outdoorsy stuff, and I won't have the money to be eating out etc. Plus the cost of living in Worcester is ridiculously low, comparatively speaking. I've seen apts that aren't bad for $300/mo (in a 3br).

After that there was a social thing at Boston Billiards, but I had plans back in Boston so I had to run. Essentially the biggest thing I got out of the day was a chance to hang out with peeps a bit more, and get more housing/roommate info. They gave out a packet with everyone who was looking for a roommate.

Thanks Lacheln!!! Nice description of your orientation day! Good luck!
