I did them a few weeks ago (before finding out I was waitlisted). They weren't too bad--I just did the online option rather than submitting paper forms. It's esp. easy if you've already done things like need access and college board.

are...you guys talking about fafsa stuff?

Got a call today from Dean Dodson, notifying me that I have been awarded a full tuition scholarship!!!!

Wow, congrats!!

Do you think you'll go to WashU?

Thanks. I feel really privileged to get a scholarship at such a great school. As for whether I'll matriculate, nothing is certain yet but this made WashU become a much more realistic choice. Hopefully second look in two weeks will help me make up my mind.

I'm really confused by WashU's online aid forms. I did the option to fill the forms outline so I wouldn't have to fill them out, but there is no option to submit them... I filled in all of this BS information (e.g. budget; aren't they supposed to tell ME that?) and I don't know what to do with it.

Help?

Thanks guys 🙂

I got a database error last time I tried to fill out their online forms... I eventually just gave up and opted for the paper forms.

Thanks. I think I'll just call them tomorrow. I'm just now getting all my FinAid stuff in to the schools that WL'd me; is it unusual that WashU wants copies of all tax forms mailed to them even though we've already submitted the FAFSA? I don't get why they want that stuff.

It's annoying but not unusual. From my experience, it's more unusual to not want copies.

WashU's need-based aid attempts to take into account significant financial obligations by your parents that do not show up on the FAFSA. For example, if you have a few brothers and sisters going to college/professional school, WashU will attempt to take that into account when determining your aid.

It takes a lot more work for their financial aid office to do, but they say it provides a bonus to students by making more aid is available to students whose parents are wealthier on paper but have lots of debt.

At least that is what they said during my interview way back in September.

I just got an email telling me that I didn't get a merit-based scholarship. I think it's time for me to say goodbye to WashU...

I'll be withdrawing soon, good luck to all the waitlisters!

Shemarty, sorry to hear about the scholarship. I believe I may be in the same boat, but I haven't heard anything either way. Do you know what the email said/what it was titled just in case I missed it in my inbox? And did you apply for both the merit and the Olin scholarships? I just called the financial aid office, but the lady said she didn't know. Thanks!

I applied for Olin and got a snail mail letter many weeks ago telling me that they're not giving me an interview.

I applied for regular merit scholarships and got an email with the subject heading "Information regarding Merit Scholarship" which said

The Washington University School of Medicine Merit Scholarship Selection Committee has just completed the difficult task of selecting candidates to whom we are able to offer merit-based scholarships. I regret to inform you that you were not selected as a recipient and will not be awarded one of our merit-based awards.

This year the task proved to be incredibly difficult due to the number of superb candidates who applied. The Selection Committee was very impressed with your credentials and accomplishments and hope that you will be joining our medical school community in August.

This decision has no effect on your eligibility for need-based financial aid. We are proud of our need-based financial aid program which for the 2009 incoming class will limit our medical student’s annual need-based borrowing to no more than $20,000 annually. The remainder of the cost of education will be met by scholarships provided by the School of Medicine. This combined with our tuition stabilization program (which holds tuition constant for four years of medical school) makes costs predictable and limits need-based borrowing to $80,000 for four years.

Thank you again for your scholarship application. I only wish we had more scholarships to award and could have offered one to you.

washU has a base loan of $20,000?!? That's incredible! 👍

Lol! Yeah, I suddenly want to get off this wait list even more! I had been consoling myself that my current acceptance was my cheapest option anyway but if this is true, Wash U actually would be!

Maybe I'm mistaken, and I hope someone will correct me if I am, but I believe the $20,000 limit presumes that you are contributing the "expected family contribution." I think Wash U's policy is that your need (need = total cost - EFC) will be met half with grants and half with loans, up to a loan level of $20k. So if your need is $40,001, you will have $20,000 in loans and $20,001 in grants. This is an incredibly generous policy, as financial aid policies go, but just like any other school, if you can't come up with the EFC, you still have to rely on GradPlus or some such preditory lending source to the tune of well over $20,000.

just sent an LOI through postal mail. Hopefully it's not futile

Argh, I just found out that a very good friend of mine is going to Wash U for grad school. That bumps Wash U up my wait list list.

Has anyone emailed their letters? I also sent mine (letter of interest) by snail mail but I'm starting to feel really paranoid about trusting the USPS. I want to send an update soon too and I'm not sure how to go about it.

you could call and confirm if they received it. also I don't think it matters between postal mail vs email. You could do both just in case.

True. I'll try calling today.

I just withdrew. Good luck to everyone on the waitlist!!

SECOND LOOK! (I hope I'm not the only one who took business attire to mean suit...)

If you can't come up with the EFC, it doesn't mean you have to take GradPlus.
With your hypothetic $40,000 need, you would get $20,000 in grants and the rest in loans (Stafford sub and unsub). For the rest (EFC) you can max out the Staffords (8,500 + 33,660 = $42,160) for a total COA of $62,160. That's plenty for lots of schools, WashU included. So, no need for gradplus or other private loans. 🙂

Withdrew today. Good luck to waitlisters!

Did everyone get the "Do you still want to be on the wait list?" email?

yup, accompanied by a heart lurch 🙂 these e-mails are going to give me a heart attack! :lame:

yep, me too! nail biting will begin on friday...

so, i know the first email said that the WL wasn't ranked, but how can it not be if Wash U's is supposed to be uber-long? anyone have any insight into the plucking-people-off-the-WL process? thanks!

I called the office a few weeks ago with a list of questions from my own status to the general process. I was given exactly zero information and a much encouragement to never call back again.

I may have caught someone on a bad day though.

Did anyone on the waitlist not receive an email? :/ I never got my waitlist notification email either... maybe I should call up the office and see what's up...

did they send you paper mail or it was just up on the website? i think more than a few people mentioned that in april actually, but yeah that's strange! good luck calling!

maybe you are special and ranked high? You can only hope right?

but that sucks for us regular folks who did receive emails

It was just up on the website-- I called to confirm. Odd thing is, I seem to be able to receive replies from the admissions office perfectly fine, and I was able to receive my secondary and my interview invitation emails without a problem. Maybe they just hate me and want me to not notice and drop off the waitlist :/

no you are probably special :luck:

i'd think monday but who knows. This year 5/15 falls on friday

Did anyone else get a call from Dean Dodson yesterday/today? He left a voicemail telling me to call back, which I just saw today.

Couldn't get in touch with him (due to graduation), but I'm hoping it's good news...

I got a call (apparently; am out of the country) and then an email. Emailed him back and got an email back (after a failed call to my skype number because I was asleep) confirming that I've been accepted. :soexcited:

Good luck to the rest of you! :luck::luck::luck:

👍 congrats!

Did anyone get an email confirmation for the "wait list inquiry response" on the 13th (last week)? I didn't get an email or anything, so I'm not sure whether it went through or not?

Accepted this morning at 10:06am via phone call from Dean Dodson 🙂

Good luck to all!

I called Dean Dodson this morning after missing another call from him over the weekend, and was accepted.

Best of luck to everyone else on the WL!
