Is this how it is supposed to be?

For my course list, even the ones I took this semester are listed under "2008" despite the fact I chose 2008-2009 school year and chose 2nd semester (spring). I assume this is supposed to happen?

Awesome! Thank you.

So I finished with my application and AMCAS sent me a letter stating:

I finished reviewing their changes and I don't want to submit an Academic Change Request. So...am I done? Nothing more to do for my primaries, right?
You're finished! For a few weeks anyway until you get secondaries 🙂.

2. Under activities can I add stuff I'm doing in the fall? I feel it would really add a lot since I'm starting both TA and tutoring jobs.

If I remember correctly you can't enter a start date that's in the future right? You can send schools update letters or else talk about it in your interviews later on.

On the AMCAS main page there is a note that says, Medical schools will begin receiving applications on June 24, 2009.

Does this mean that even if I am verified earlier, the med schools will not receive my applications?

Correct. But don't feel too cheated. You'll be in the first batch that goes out and you can rest for a few weeks before you start doing secondaries.

Two questions: 1. This has likely already been answered, but we can include future work/activities, right? I plan to have one of my best experiences this summer. 2. Do intramurals qualify as Extracurricular or Intercollegiate Athletics? I know it's stupid, but I'm not sure what Intercollegiate Athletics covers - probably just your school's sports teams, etc

I don't know about the sports question for sure but I'd figure that's an EC.

I do know that the AMCAS app won't let you enter future dates that haven't happened yet - I tried and it didn't work. Your options will be to wait until your summer experience happens before submitting (if it won't put you too far back in the process) or just send update letters to the schools you applied to later.

Intramurals is just a hobby. Inter vs. intra. Intercollegiate sports are also known as extramural sports.

Hey guys,

I have a transcript-related question...basically all students at my university take a language placement exam at freshman orientation. If they do well enough, they can place out of several semesters of our foreign language requirement. I did this and placed into 4th semester Foreign Language class; additionally, I got an A in the class which meant I got retroactive credit (4) for the earlier classes too (101, 102, 103). This is listed on my transcript as "credit by exam" so I'm wondering how to list this on AMCAS?

Is it CLEP? AP? Exempt? I want to make sure I'm conveying accurate information to med schools/AMCAS so I thought I'd ask here.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

EDIT: CLEP, as I've read online, is administered by the College Board. This exam was a university-specific one not administered by College Board, so that's why I am confused...

Quick opinion question: is it worth it to include National Merit Finalist recognition from high school? Or is this a waste of their time?

Waste of time. Don't include anything from high school unless it continued in college.

So on the website it states that schools will get the application around June 24th. I was wondering how long AMCAS takes to process and verify everything. In other words, what date can I submit by so that schools still get my application by Jun 24th? Thanks.

It depends... there are people who submitted today and were verified today. Most others who submitted today will probably be verified tomorrow. But, the longer you wait, the longer it takes, and it's completely dependent on how many people apply. Case in point... two years ago, I submitted on June 19th and was verified on the 21st. Last year, submitting at the same time would've taken closer to a week to verify.

Do I have to submit my application before they will upload my transcript?

No... you can send your transcripts almost a month before you can submit, and they log them as they arrive.

So what exactly does that mean? Will it take days/weeks????

Recertification takes place instantly.

How long did it take AMCAS to list your letters as received after you had interfolio or your school letter service mail them to AMCAS?

I sent my letters on Friday, and I think they were in AMCAS on Tuesday.

So I finished with my application and AMCAS sent me a letter stating:

I finished reviewing their changes and I don't want to submit an Academic Change Request. So...am I done? Nothing more to do for my primaries, right?

Yup, all done.

Lectures with lab included...I am confused...

On my transcript, it lists the lecture class (say 4 hours) with the grade, but right after that there is another "class" entry showing the lab, with 0 hours credit, and no grade...

So, per AMCAS instructions, I assume I bubble in the "lecture and lab combined" and add "and lab" to the lecture title, but my question is do I also add the lab entry, with no credit hours and no grade?

Help!!!

If they are listed as the same course (i.e. BIO 111) with separate sections, just list them together. If they are listed as separate courses (i.e. BIO 111 and 115), list them separately. Don't worry about the section numbers.

Yup.

Yes. They list it according to the year in which the academic year began. In this case, 2008. If courses from this Fall were listed, they would start under 2009.

Ok this might be a really stupid question:

I worked at Abercrombie for 4 yrs and I basically took on a lot more responsibilities than the normal employee and even more so than the managers. I know that it is irrelev., but it was a consistent job throughout these years and encompassed constant interaction with people. In listing work experiences, would it not be wise to include it?

Not include the job at all or not include your responsibilities? I think it'd be very appropriate to include both. Your work is a very important part of what you've been doing and who you are. Maybe say you were a "trusted employee who was given many additional responsibilities outside normal job duties" or something.

just to let you know, some schools even send secondaries before you are verified, as long as you submit (i just backchecked my email), but most wait til you are

hi,

i'm new to this and thinking about applying to med school this yr.

I have a 3.8, 3 publications, 3 yrs of research, and other extracirriculars, but a 31R on my mcat. My verbal score was not competitive at all. I am taking the test again in August, but if I want to see my chances with this score, should I just not state that I plan on taking it again in August so that they evaluate my application immediately upon submission? What should I do? A lot of people have been advising me to apply early if I don't have the best stats, but if I state that I am retaking my MCAT in August, they won't touch my application until that august score is submitted right?

I plan on applying to only CA schools, so I know I need to have stellar stats (I reside in CA).

Thanks for your help!

So I submitted today at 5:30 P.M., any chance of being verified tonight, or do they stop looking at apps at a certain time

AMCAS office is in DC, I believe. A usual working day goes from 9 to 5 PM EST. AMCAS hours of operation is 9 to 7 PM EST.

BUMP, anyone care to answer my question (see 8 posts up)? I appreciate the help!

Thanks for the heads up. I check my e-mail often anyways so if I see a secondary, I'll be ready and waiting. Already looked up all the schools' secondaries from last year to get a general idea of what they'll be asking.

If I'm currently taking a class that is not yet finished (no grade yet) do I report it on my AMCAS courses, and under what category?

The class is a non-required, pass/no-pass (credit/no-credit) class.

And would I have to submit ANOTHER transcript once the class is finished and grades are listed?

for my biographical information, what phone number should I put? Usually I just put my home phone number, but this summer and all through the app process I'll be at school (away from home). Should I put my cell phone number instead? I'm always hesitant to do this because my phone gets spotty reception on campus and I don't want to risk med schools calling me and not being able to get through because of my reception. At the same time, I would rather med schools call me if they need to call about anything, instead of calling my parents at home... wht should I put?

I put my cell number. I didn't have a house phone in college and now that I'm temporarily living at home I don't like to have my parents get calls for me. I also will prob. not have a house phone if I move up to DC this coming year or boston.

My transcript was sent almost two weeks ago, is it normal for them to still not be entered?

I was in the same position. I was going to retake mine again in August but my pre-med advisor told me not to so I cancelled. With a 31R you probably don't have to retake, but if you're going to I'm pretty sure those schools that are ok with your 31R will let you know, whereas the others might wait to hear your next score.

i'm also waiting on transcripts... i sent the request form to my schools like a week or two ago. how long does it usually take?

weird. right after i posted that i got the receipt thing from them. i keep seeing people saying that their gpa is shown on the application.. where do i find that?

You've got to apply outside of CA. Pick a few more schools where your stats are above average and that doesn't get 10,000 applications/yr.

I have a quick question. Though I have not shadowed other doctors, I have shadowed my parents throughout high school and college, both in the hospital and at their offices. Generally, I would file at their offices, but they would let me watch procedures and stuff. And I followed them on rounds at the hospital. I would estimate I shadowed them for like 200-300 hours over the last few years alone. Would this go on the application? I have a good idea of the day-to-day life of a doctor thanks to this experience, so I feel like I should put it on. They are both primary care.

Edit: In addition to that, if I take summer classes at a local school, do I add it as another institution? I haven't taken the classes yet, so its prospective. Thanks.

Hmm should have multiquoted everyone... anyway

Just click the "current/future" box. You send an updated transcript later directly to the school where you matriculate.

Your GPA only shows once you are verified and it will only show on the pdf version and not the online version. The PDF is obtained by going to Print AMCAS tab on the right.

It took me weeks to figure this out. years ago they used to show the GPA directly on the online version. I remember cuz I started to fill it out just to organize information one year and it showed GPA calculations. but now they just show it on the pdf.

Searched this thread and can't find the answer. I guess it is a unique problem.

My friend withdrew from UCLA for a semester.
Now we know all classes withdrawn from need to be listed in AMCAS.
The problem is that the transcript does not list those classes. It only says "mm/dd/yy withdrew" for that semester.
Contacted UCLA and they said they don't keep those records either.
It was 7 years ago and my friend cannot remember the classes anymore. They probably are nonscience classes though coz major then was nonscience.
Called AMCAS and answering party offered no help - basically said "I dont know what you should do but you're supposed to list all classes."

Anybody else in this situation? Opinions appreciated.

Did he return to UCLA in a later semester? Then I would make up a grouping of classes that show up in say the next semester, and indicate these were the classes withdrawn from...probably a pretty good bet, anyway.

AMCAS can be a lot of BS, and this is an example...better to make up something plausible, just to get past this hurdle, than to not do anything, and have AMCAS screw up your app.

haha, if they can't get through to you, do you think they'd leave a voicemail or call back or something?

ok final question lol, would you guys recommend setting up a separate email account for med school stuff? I just realized that my email will shut down after I graduate (june of next year). I realize that some people still have correspondence with med schools throughout the summer (and sometimes up until the week before they matriculate). Should I create a new email account and put that on the amcas app? Or do med schools prefer you to use your university account?

So I graduated in 2008 from my state university but I needed a few bio labs to meet pre-reqs so I enrolled at a CC this fall (money issues) just to take the labs.

I haven't taken any classes at the school before. Do I need to send transcripts in from the CC or list as "transcript not required" since I haven't gotten any grades or attended any classes there before?

You know what, we might just do this so the damn app can be sent already. It is kinda BS as you said but what can you do, right? We'll try calling AMCAS again and demand to talk to a higher-up for definite answers. But if anybody can share their own experience, we'll really appreciate it!

Current/Future
Use this Course Type designation for any courses you are currently taking or expect
to take before entering medical school. Listing these courses is especially important
if you have not yet completed medical school prerequisites.
No AMCAS grade will be
assigned.
These entries are not binding or required, but are intended to give the medical
schools an indication of what courses you expect to complete before matriculation.
Current/future courses do not have to appear on a transcript to be entered in
coursework listing. AMCAS will not add, remove, or modify current/future courses
after the application is submitted. If this information changes, please contact your
medical schools directly.
If current/future grades are entered, but not listed on the official transcript at the
time of verification, they will not be included in the AMCAS GPA. Likewise, if grades
are not entered, at the time of verification appear on the official transcript on file at
AMCAS, they will be included in the AMCAS GPA.

So it appears you can just list that you intend to take labs next semester. No transcript required for a future class.

So it appears you can just list that you intend to take labs next semester. You don't even have to indicate that you are taking them at a different place because it will only complicate your app. The only important thing is to let them know you intend to take those labs soon.

Thank you for the quick input. The only issue is that I still have to enter an institution for current/future coursework and since I'm not taking the labs at my University it doesn't seem I should list them under that school.

Under the "transcript exemption request" thing on AMCAS one of the reasons I can select is "Current (spring, summer, fall) or upcoming (spring, summer) coursework, no previous enrollment at this school." So I think I will list the school and future courses and just say transcript is not required for the reason above. I hope this is good enough.

Do Case and CCLCM share a primary? Two for the price of one?

It took my transcripts about 6 days from when i requested them from the school to when the AMCAS said they received them.

You won't find it until after they verify you.

I'd recommend having an e-mail account separate from your school account, regardless of whether you use it solely for medical school applications or not.

I don't think it really matters as far as medical schools are concerned, just don't choose something that's inappropriate as your username.

No, you don't need to send in transcripts now. But you will when you matriculate.

Yeah, I do. I just wasn't sure whether or not I should use that on my AMCAS app. It's basically [email protected], so it's pretty legit. is there a way to change your contact info for schools after apps are submitted?

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I work at a research job and I have received a publication with my name. When writing about the job in the EC section, could I just include the reference/publication thereor do I have to create a separate EC (under pubilcation) and write it there.

I just assume putting all my stuff I've done in one job is better than separating it into multilpe activities..... is that ok?

I am concerned about my descriptions for the activities/work section.

The reason I am concerned about this is because I have written much less about my actual duties, but rather, what I learned from them and how I think they make me better prepared for medical school and beyond. essentially, i've written 30% description and 70% what it means to me.

My concern is that I do not explain enough about the activities and that when the initial screeners go through my application, they will skim through and miss a lot of important things. but i didn't want it to be like a bullet point of things i did.

any suggestions? advice? comments? THANKS!!!!!!!

I think I have a problem with transcripts. I have four institutions I've attended, but all of them are on one transcript, thanks to study abroad or all being in in the same consortium. So on my Official Transcript Status, I have one transcript received and three transcripts "Not Required".

However, I just submitted my application, and this is what my application status is:

Submitted to AMCAS - Waiting for Transcripts : Applicant has certified and submitted application but AMCAS application is pending processing while AMCAS waits for transcripts.

Anyone know what the story is here? They received the one transcript I have a week or two ago.

Probably because you needed to print all the transcript request forms and staple them together and send them with that one transcript. That's what I had to do cuz I had to list the same school multiple times to be able to show that I got more then one degree from there. But I gave all the transcript request forms with the same school together rather then just printing one and not printing the others. I'd call AMCAS and see what they tell you to do.

so a couple of my med schools require letters from specific people, so I found letters to satisfy those requirements. I've sent all my LORS (about 7 of them... ~5 from profs/PIs and 2 for special programs) to my career center. However, my career center told us to select "Letter Packet" on amcas because they will just send them all to amcas together as a packet. However, I do not want all 7 letters to go to my med schools. those extra 2 letters for the special programs would be irrelevant for most other med schoools, and of course I know they get pissed wihen you submit too many letters. i asked my school if there was any way around this issue and they said that I should just send out my letters as a packet to amcas, and then when secondaries come in I can pick and choose out of those letters which ones will go to which schools. I was under the impression that if i send a letter packet to amcas, ALL of my listed schools will receive ALL of the letters. Which one is true?
