My boyfriend laughed at me the whole time I was on the phone, with good reason. When Dr. Capers said that he was calling to welcome me to the OSU family, all I could respond with was "ARE YOU SERIOUS? IS THIS REAL?!" to which he responded with dead (awkward) silence.

Well, that's discouraging. I interviewed on February 17th and am still deferred. Were you in-state?

Deferred. At least I won't have to wait very long to get the official yes/waitlist decision. Congrats to everyone accepted! I wasn't sure Dr. Capers would risk calling on St. Patrick's Day...I wonder how those conversations went.

Where did you get that 391 number? I'm a little bit confused -- MSAR data says that OSU interviewed 652 people total last year. If 391 have already been accepted, then that leaves only 261 interviewees not accepted (assuming the total interviewed number stays the same). I heard that the waitlist was probably going to be about 200-300 people. Does that mean that almost everyone who wasn't accepted was waitlisted? Or was there a dramatic increase in interviews from last year? Or is that 391 figure including both acceptances and waitlisted students? Do you know how many people were outright rejected post-interview?

That 391 number also surprised me as well. It seems a littly risky to accept over 150 more people than you have spots for....seems a bit high.

The 391 number is for people invited to second look day...so I assume they are all acceptances. I don't think it includes people who have already declined their acceptances.

Although it seems high, I think a lot of people will have multiple acceptances and go to a different school.

Yeah you are exactly right - every year we accept right around that 400 mark to begin with - come May 15th several students with acceptances to many top schools will choose to go elsewhere for various reasons...and get the number back down to class size (or hopefully below for anyone on the waitlist🙂)

I wouldn't be surprised if more students than usual pick OSU over other "top" schools this year. Not only do you get in-state tuition after 1 year, but the school really sells itself on the idea that it is going somewhere. To back it up, OSU and OSUMC have shot up in the rankings and the announcement of ProjectONE will definitely draw students in who want to invest in a school that is investing in its reputation.

I am faced with that decision myself. I could go to other "top" programs, but OSU is a top program. The medical center has shown incredible growth. In a few years, OSU will have a much stronger national reputation. I believe it already has a very strong regional reputation. The main factor that is pulling me in is the fact that I could get in-state tuition after the first year. However, third year is still very expensive for some reason.

Hope to see some of you guys at Second Look weekend! They allow you to bring one guest, usually a spouse/parent... I'm bringing my girlfriend, we've been dating for 6 and a half years and might as well be married. The schedule looks great though, and I've already accepted their admission offer so I'm excited to see what I'll be doing next year! I just hope my poor car can handle the trip from Iowa.

Also, I got the "parent financial information" form. I wish they would've only let me include information from one parent. I included my mother's information on the FAFSA because she was traditionally my custodial parent when I was younger (they are divorced). My dad unfortunately makes much more money, but he's gotten remarried, moved to California and has a 2-year-old baby with another on the way (talk about being busy in old age...) Neither of my parents paid for tuition, room, board, or living expenses for my undergrad and med school's not going to be any different. Maybe I can demonstrate independence since I've been claiming myself on my tax returns for the last few years? I guess the merit-based scholarships after first year are my only real hope here. 😀

Third year is more expensive just because it's longer (12 full months, no summer break like first and second years). I think it's roughly the same at other med schools - have you seen any where third year is the same cost?

I'm in the same situation. I just called Samuel to talk to him about it. Hopefully he'll be understanding and they'll be able to just use my mom's info.

Yep, just got off the phone with him too. I'm guessing that just like undergrad, though, a parent's willingness to contribute isn't really going to matter here. He told me they just wanted to determine our socioeconomic status, so as far as I'm concerned I doubt there's any hope. I'll keep my fingers crossed, though.

The 391 figure sounds about right. Lackli said last year there was not much waitlist movement and they ended up accepting 440ish according to the msar (if i remember correctly). I think eventually we will see the same thing with about 30 - 50 people coming of the waitlist. Kinda sucks to hear but it's cool to know what's going on and where we stand. It was so we could contact people who went to the same undergrad and encourage them to come to second look/recruit them to OSU....

I'm curious about this too. Anybody heard anything? Their website said they accepted 442 last year, but I think I saw somewhere they only accepted 405 in 2007. I hope there's still room for those of us waiting!

Gotcha, that makes sense. It seems like there are hundreds of deferred people though for only ~30 spots and that's assuming they even take as many as last year...

Who knows they might take more (ever the optimist I am, lol). Let's just keep our fingers crossed. I'm guessing there are 220 to 240 people on the WL. Not everyone will stay on either. Just gotta keep positive and imagine that phone call coming from Dr. Capers

Unfortunately I do not know of any official date when these things will happen, however, like you stated, it will happen in April

This last wednesday was the final interview date for the season - at the rate decisions have been handed out, it would seem reasonable these people will be given a phone call/decision by Monday April 12th - I imagine very shortly after that point an official waitlist will be formed as there will be no more weekly reviews of applicants/acceptances

Again, just my best guess, but hope that helps a bit!

Got my message from Dr. Capers yesterday!🙂😀😛 Got a voicemail since I lost my blackberry on a return flight from an interview. I couldn't answer any calls, and actually had to call in to get my messages. But it was more than worth all the trouble, great news!!! Wasn't even expecting it yesterday. I interviewed 3/22. OOS.

From what I've observed thus far, yes, those from the same interview day will get accepted/deferred at the same time. Typically, the accepted calls all go out on the same day, and then, the deferments go out the next day.

It really varies from year to year. The year I was accepted (2005), nearly half of the class was accepted off the deferred list (which would be ~100). I think this number has steadily declined, though, as OSU has moved up the rankings, continued to improve it's interview day/recruitment process, and more people choose OSU over their other acceptances.
