Possibly, I've only heard back from Downstate and Stony Brook so far and I'm waiting on a few other schools. Between those two SUNYs though, I'm not sure which one is my favorite...

Stony Brook is pretty hush hush about releasing any info about waitlists/where you are on it/etc.

All I know is when I went to my interview one of the employees in the office stated that there has been less and less waitlist movement from year to year during the past few years. Not good news for me.

We are probably not seeing the post-interview rejections because people don't usually post when they're rejected.

Also, the SB thread died around summer when the waitlist movement started. There was at least one SB waitlist thread that went on a little longer, and I saw 3 or 4 people who were accepted there as well.

I was going to count the number of acceptances in both threads and just see how many acceptances there were in comparison to acceptances through the year to get an idea of the proportion, but then I realized it was a waste of time. I would estimate like 6 or 7 off the waitlist though.

But even considering that, probably less than 50% of applicants use SDN. And among that 50%, even fewer actually post, and of those that actually post even fewer think "I gotta' post this on SDN!" as soon as they're accepted late in the summer. They have bigger things to worry about (like where they're going to be living for the following year). All those things considered, I think the waitlist movement is probably substantial. But keep in mind that I'm basing this on conjecture based upon conjecture which is also based on conjecture.

well do they do it like buffalo and ONLY accept as many people as there are spots (~150) during the interview season, and then start bringing people off in May?

or is the waitlist more of a longshot?


I'll give them a call and see if maybe we can find out what third we are on in say March. Or you know what, I'll just ask if I can know now, it can't hurt, so long as I'm polite 😉.

Also, Buffalo said that basically last year they accepted like over 2/3 of the waitlist. they actually got into the lower third. i doubt anyone has info on how 'deep' stonybrook got, but if they do, it would be great to know.

Well at SB, they're accepting 300/600 vs. 30% out of 600ish @ Buffalo. Waitlist movement is difficult to predict from year to year, but if you consider the locations, you can guess where students prefer...

Still waiting to hear about an interview 😕. I hope there are still some seats left by the time I actually do interview (If that happens). Keeping my fingers crossed! I got an interview from Tuft's Maine Track Program (02/26) and was placed on Hold at Albany Medical College. Wish me luck.

I doubt it could be that low. I think they accept something like 300 applicants and a good proportion of that number has to come from the waitlist. UB accepts MANY more ppl from the waitlist. Having vast experience with both places I can say LI is MUCH better for many reasons. Weather: Buffalo snow isn't bad (southtowns are bad...not where UB is located) BUT is VERY cold. Also, Buffalo has almost no sunshine. Not far behind Seattle for overcast.



Almost every student at SB SOM had multiple acceptances. They give you the stats on your interview day.

i disagree, though. you can't compare upstate new york to long island, both culture-wise (proximity to NYC, mostly) or weather. Upstate is markedly worse in the fall through winter.
Re: waitlist--it's possible that Stony overaccepts so it doesn't get too deep into the waitlist. But, as we all know, most of this is heresay.

I think the differences are overstated. It's not like we're comparing Buffalo and Florida. The mean temperature in winter differs by 7 degrees (Fahrenheit). The biggest differences I think are the summers. The Buffalo high is 80 degrees, and NYC gets up to 108 degrees. It always surprises me that there are jerks with air conditioners in Buffalo.

Having experienced both climates for long periods of time, I can say with confidence that the slight change in latitude does make a tremendous difference. Buffalo gets blistery cold and very windy. The amount of overcast is ridiculous. You go for months, and months, and months without sunshine....or maybe one day a month of partly cloudy sunshine.

I am not trying to knock on Buffalo....but in all honesty you cannot compare it to Stony. You cannot compare weather, culture, or lifestyle.

I love winter sports.....but not enough to stay in B-Lo......give me a nice trip to Vermont or Colorado and I will be PERFECTLY content for the year.

Upstate/Buff/Roch is definitely worse weather wise. Temperature is probably not much different. I live up here and we constantly get slammed with Regional snow storms (which LI also experiences) but we also get hit with Lake Effect snow all the time thanks to the great lakes. (I just thought the way softmed put it was funny )

Long Island average lows are only slightly higher compared to Buffalo, but average daily highs are substantially higher in Long Island. Also, when you add the fact that Buffalo has blistery windchill's........it makes the B-Lo temperatures even lower.

Plus, LI does not typically get hit with heavy snow. The snow storm this past week is a pretty odd occurrence. It snows in LI.....but nothing like Buffalo....especially the southtowns in Buffalo.

It's weird. We usually get slammed all January and February pretty hard up here but the rest of the north east (except for us) seems to be getting it lately. I think December was far worse thus far...

Yea they do have night boarding / skiing. For 175 bucks you get a free lift ticket every single night, every single week, for the entire season. Oh....and they drive you for free via bus each night of the week to and from the slopes:

I much prefer warm weather but I am used to it after living here for 21 years. If anything, the cold helps me focus as well because "I'm not missing anything outside" haha.

I'm also an MSTP'er and int'd on 2/17, They told us they offer ~100 int's and about 10 accepts.

They were nice, really stressed their passion about rsch and often reassured us that we had really impressed them by making it this far.

Wow, that really surprises me... I was under the impression they got about 100 applications a year... not 100 interviews. Their website says something about them getting 100-150 a year and only interviewing about 25% of those. I'm really surprised to hear they've given out so many interviews this year!

The Dean noted that most students find people to live with during the second look. Stony will also provide us with a list of faculty/people that rent homes to the students.

Almost all of the students live with other people....LI gets pretty expensive.

You can also look on craigslist.com.....that is the go to site for any relocation.

Thanks LIDO... I visited the housing website and spoke to someone in the housing department. It seems some medical and graduate students live in Chapin - an on campus housing. In the end I will decide based on convenience and affordability. Thanks for the info and I will take your advice and try to find a roomate at second look. See you there!

there is a very extensive list of houses and apartments for rent and classmates who are looking for roommates that'll be made available to you during pre-orientation in June.

absolutely do not live on campus, especially Chapin. When you get the materials for on-campus housing promptly place them in the recycle bin.

i can only speak for chapin (for the record i never actually lived there but know very well what it's like)...

the cons:
1. it's poorly maintained, snow isn't shoveled in a timely manner
2. you are living with other non-med student grad students who are total strangers and who don't have much interest in getting to know you
3. no living room
4. there are "health and safety inspections" where a stranger comes into you room to inspect it for cleanliness and safety hazards ... if you get three violations it goes on your academic record
5. you have an RA
6. it is nowhere near a supermarket or any restaurant so you still absolutely need a car

the pros:
1. utilities are included so you can heat up your room and use up electricity as much as you want with no fluctuating expenses
2. plenty of fridge space
3. within walking distance of school (though its a bit rough to walk to school in the rain/snow)
4. cleaning service cleans bathroom and kitchen for you very often

basically i'd take a pass on it.... a handful of my classmates who started in on-campus housing have moved out since the beginning of the year. as for where to live...how much "older" are we talking here? are you married? kids? ...generally though the closer you are to school the more expensive it'll be but the more convenient it is however any town surrounding stony brook is going to have available housing and is a drivable distance to school in the morning. if you want more personal advice or have more questions feel free to PM me.

planning to live on long island without a car is not the best idea. when i interviewed there everyone said really negative things about on-campus housing. There are tons of apartments/sections of houses for rent in the surrounding area- check out craigslist, newsday.com, and i'm pretty sure the school offers a list of places they suggest. If you go to second look while you're walking around you'll see signs everywhere for ppl with rooms to rent or looking for roommates who already have nice places.
