It would seem obvious to list Dean's List in the "Awards, Honors, Scholarships" section of our applications.

BUT, in the instructions, it says that if we want to list Dean's List for multiple semesters, we should just list it once, and then in the information box we should let them know that we were on the list for multiple semesters (ex: Fall 07, Fall 08, Spring 09, etc). Well, the only place there is an information box to type text into is the "Extracurricular, Volunteer, Community Service" section of our applications.

So, there is a contradiction.

I have only been on the Dean's List twice, so I am just listing them both on the "Awards, Honors, Scholarships" section...as separate awards. Is this what you all did?

Yes i noticed this as well. I only had it 3 times so I just put each one as a different award. Dean's list is not an EC, so I really couldn't bring myself to type it in there. I'm sure they will realize that there was no way for us to combine them all into one award.

Is there a way to check your GPA post-verification if changes were made?

When you are finished being processed there will be a release date to your selected schools. You can click on that and see what it says in the primary that was sent to the school. Until then though you won't be able to see.

what's the maximum number of activities/awards we can enter?

Hey Guys,

I am currently a going to be a senior this upcoming fall. I am going to the the MCAT for the first time, Aug 4th. I am currently enrolled in a kaplan course in preparation. My cgpa is 2.98 and my sgpa is 2.84. I received a D in orgo I and a C in orgo II. I have also received a C and C- in physics (which was taken in high school and transferred over). I am planning on retaking orgo I and physics II this fall. When should I apply to NYCOM? or what should I do to boost up my gpa?

Don't double post. Retake the courses you got a C or worse in to boost your GPA. Don't apply this year unless you do fantastic on the MCAT you will wind up wasting your money with <3.0GPA

I know the dates but I dont know the hours

Ohh. If you know around how many hours a week you did, just add up a rough estimate... They will not be able to really check this. And it's not like you are making up a number.

As someone with a low GPA that has applied twice before, I strongly recommend that you wait a year and apply next time. You will be applying very late in the cycle as it is, and they will not hesitate to send you a rejection that soon in the cycle. Trust me, I got rejections in August and September the first time I applied because of this. It's a waste of money, but also it's a big waste of time that you could be spending fixing up the holes in your application. Coming back next year with confidence will be worth the wait!

The answer to boosting your GPA is you need to buckle down and fix your problems. If you are continuously making Cs you should take a different approach to studying. Dig deep and finish this next year with mostly As and you will have an upward trend as well as a great GPA. Then apply!

So I submitted my application to 29 schools a couple minutes ago. Within the AACOMAS instruction manual, it says applying to 29 schools should cost $1071 (page 4), but my total was $905.

I'm definitely happy it's cheaper, but I'm confused. Is it something I should worry about? 😕

Hi everyone,

This is one question I need to be answered:

So I want to put down that I did some real quality volunteering and shadowing in a primary care clinic over the summer after my freshman year. I mean its real important in that it was one of the reasons why I want to be a PCP and I dedicated A LOT of hours to it. However, the problem is that it was in Toronto, CA. I've been discouraged from a couple med students to put anything outside the US. Can someone please answer this question for me?

Thanks a bunch.

My total for 7 was cheaper than the manual stated as well. Not worried lol

If it was significant for you why not include it. Its not like the practice in Canada is significantly different than in the states. If it was somewhere that someone was practicing naturopathic medicine in a tribal village somewhere and you were trying to use it as shadowing that may be discouraged but PCP shadowing should be fine to include as far as I'm concerned.

Just curious, what exactly are you guys putting in the awards/honors/scholarships section. I haven't exactly won many awards and honors but I feel like I am forgetting about something that may be super obvious. All I have is dean's lists and an academic scholarship so far. does graduating count as an award?

i said dean's list, poster presentations, travel awards, and a publication

would you say scholarships are "travel awards". I received 2 scholarships when I applied to study abroad, but those were for financial reasons. Basically, I applied, wrote a PS, sent in transcripts/ filled out a butt load of paperwork and then they awarded me with a "$3,000 Gilman Scholarship"/ "$1,500 Freeman-ASIA Scholarship".

Should I be including these in AACOMAS' award and scholarships section?

I would.

Is anyone else having difficulty with their transcripts?

I've sent transcripts from my university to both AMCAS and AACOMAS at the same time, with my AMCAS and AACOMAS ID# visible. AMCAS has gotten all three, while AACOMAS still says they don't have them.

Should I re-send the transcripts?

how long has it been? i sent all my transcripts on the same day, but it took 2 of the 4 a lot longer to show up to AACOMAS for whatever reason, so you might just wanna hang tight for a little while.

School #1: AMCAS 5/24, AACOMAS 5/26
School #2: AMCAS: 5/27, AACOMAS ???
School #3: AMCAS 6/3, AACOMAS ???

I already went ahead and submitted new transcripts for #2/#3 and sent it to both addresses, when I called them yesterday it says it takes a week to get the transcripts from California (I knew that, it actually took 1.5), and a "week" to process them once they're received.

If this is what happened to you, I'll just hang tight. Wanna submit my application hopefully this week 🙂

for the extracurricular section, how important is it to put a number in for the total hours over the experience? I played collegiate soccer for four years, do I really need to guesstimate a number for total hours or can I leave it blank?

i think if you put in the amount of hours per week, that would get the point across. or you could put a huge number like 10000 to really get the point across

remember Monday was a holiday.

for volunteering, if i volunteered at one hospital but different positions should i list it once then in the description write the different titles i held or list them separately

Transcript question: I submitted a request for my graduate school to send my transcript to both AMCAS and AACOMAS at the same time. AMCAS's application site says that on Tuesday it arrived and was processed or whatever. AACOMAS has yet to update their site. Would you guys say they generally take longer to enter their transcripts? It was sent out on May 24th and I can't imagine that it takes this many days for a letter to get from Detroit to Washington DC...

Yes, I've noticed that AACOMAS is slower than AMCAS when it comes to receiving transcripts - seems they're 2-4 days behind.

I'm assuming now because it was a holiday weekend they will be a bit more behind than usual.

Hey guys~

Quick question...does it benefit me to submit everything even though I'm waiting for my last transcript to arrive? It should be getting there any day now but I'm anxious to get the process going.

Thanks in advance and good luck to everyone!

Haha, I actually put 10000 for one of mine... Playing the violin from 5th grade until my senior year of high school. Figured it was about right!

Another question~

I have to re-take a class this next fall (our son was born the day before the final, it didn't go so well and it was worth a large chunk of my grade). Will I still hear back from schools even though the one class isn't complete? How does that work?

Thanks!

Any acceptance(s) would most likely be conditional and require successful completion of the pre-req.

Thanks! At least I can get a "tentative" acceptance. I have no worries about passing the class this time...no c-sections are planned for the fall semester this time around! 😀

haha sorry for quoting myself but i was wondering if anyone had any insight about this

Thanks for the advice!
I have various other questions, if I'm planning on retaking these courses in the Fall, what would I put under my primary application ? Does my GPA get calculated with what's now on my transcript only? How will they know that I am retaking the courses? This is my first time applying so any help is greatly appreciated!

Sort of a weird question, but here goes..... I just submitted the app. to several schools. If I edit any part of the app, will any new school that I add to the list see those changes?

I was thinking of adding one activity that I didn't before. It's nothing crucial though.

Good Luck to everyone......It's gonna be a heck of a year.

i think it depends on how different they are and how long each position was held. either approach is probably acceptable, it just depends on what you want to "pop" to the adcoms.

1) I'm a little confused by the first question - Does number 3 answer it?

2) Yes, your AACOMAS GPA will be calculated with the grades that are on your transcript at the moment. Only the last instance of a repeated course is included in the GPA calculation. I don't think that AACOMAS will re-calculate your GPA after initially doing so during the verification process, but you can always update the schools with your new grades.

3) You can designate a term as planned/in progress when you enter classes. You can also mark classes as "repeated."

Yes, the schools will see the changes. If it has not been verified yet, then you have no worries at all. It it has been verified, they will transmit the updated version to your schools. I had to make a correction last year and have them re-transmit. They were very helpful and gracious.

Yes your third response does answer my question, Thank you.
-My science gpa is below a 3.0🙁, and im planning on retaking a couple of courses this fall, should I submit my application the way it is now (science gpa below a 3.0) or should I wait until i have repeated the course done with and then submit it?

I think that you should wait to submit until you've repeated the courses. Your GPA could improve a lot since AACOMAS only uses the most recent grade in the GPA calculation.

Sweet thanks! 😀 Good luck with everything!

To Jayscin and everyone: does this applies to the Personal Statement? Something happened to it when I copy pasted my work onto it. It's missing some lines, so parts of it doesn't make sense! I just want to correct it. Is this allowed?

Hey guys, how long did it take AACOMAS to get your MCAT scores after you released em? I sent them on the 1st but its still not showing up.

When I entered in my information from my military SMART transcript I had to sort of make up school information. Now that I am verified it is showing my SMART classes were taken at Babes-Bolyai" University which google says is in Romania. I am really not sure why that school was listed.
I emailed them but haven't received a reply.
Does anyone have similar experience, and was it any trouble to get corrected?

Okay... real stupid mistake. When posting my PS onto the AACOMAS app, I copy pasted one of my drafts instead of the final one that I wanted to send. I also didn't read the whole thing over before submitting it. Since my app is not verified yet, does anyone know if I am allowed to go back and fix this?

The whole app. looks to be still accessible and editable. I'm just not sure if the changes will be reflected after verification.

Has anyone had this issue before?

I posted this question in the application thread, but noone saw it in the multitude of responses.

Good luck to all
