Hi, Nicole.
Hope you had a nice holiday. We are inviting some applicants to come for interviews and I would like to explain the situation, so you can decide whether it is something you'd like to do. Dr. ***** and I both liked your application very much, and are interested in meeting you. However - I have to tell you that you are the only one we are inviting who does not have a clear, strong experience and interest in *******. This obviously puts you at a disadvantage for getting accepted into our lab. I don't want you to come for the interview day under false pretences. So I will leave it up to you -for example, if you have strong interest from a school which is obviously a good fit for your background, you might want to skip our interview. We are planning to interview on Feb. 16 and 18, and we're asking people who will drive or take train/bus to try to be flexible to accommodate people who have to get flights, if that is possible. I wish you the best, and let me know what you'd like to do.

so basically, we like you, but you're probably not gonna get in, wanna come down anyway?

anyone get anything like this? not sure what to do exactly...

Someone on this forum posted they received an interview invitation from the University of Missouri-Columbia for 1/28. However, I called the psychology department and was told that the faculty are still reviewing applications and have NOT sent any invitations.

Will the person who received the invitation please PM me with your POI.

Thanks

How odd, I've never heard of that before. That's a really tough position for you. They also spelled "pretenses" incorrectly🙂

What do you think you're going to do?

Would the person that got emailed for a phone interview mind messaging me your POI and any information you have. I'm a little surprised to see SDSU/UCSD notifications so early, didn't expect to see them until Feb.

I contacted them and this is what I got. Looks like it might not be today🙁

Interview invitations will be extended in the next week or so, with
interviews on 2/4, 2/9 and 2/11. Good luck.

I wish all schools would send you something telling you if they don't invite you for an interview so you're not just waiting for something forever!

Although this is disappointing, it's good to know. Thanks for emailing them.

And congrats to those who heard from the counseling program!!

i don't think i'm going to go. i mean, what's the point? it would a) be a burden on me and b) suck for other people who really want that spot. it's just really weird to get that feedback...

Invite received, this afternoon.

Counseling Ph.D.

Okay. This. Just nearly gave me a heart attack, then i saw the second line. Whew. Fordham, quit playing games with our hearts.

That being said, why is everything so quiet on the RUTGERS front (clinical phd)?? Has any one heard ANYTHING about notifications, interview dates? I emailed them awhile back but got no reply. Please PM me if u have any info!

I think its more like: we like you but please demonstrate to us that you are really interested in us too. so if you are interested you should email back clarifying your specific interests. otherwise they'd probably write you off if you are not a good match

I am wondering the same thing!! There has been absolutely no mention of Rutgers. Has anyone heard anything from them or Florida State? I know there was mention of Florida State once, but other than that it seems like it's been quiet. Sometimes no news is good, right? :xf:

I might be in the minority but I would take that email as a positive sign.

Clearly, the rest of your application overwhelmed the committee enough to give you a shot at acceptance despite a sub par "match" in the area of research.

If you really like the program and are interested in the work of your POI, read some more about the program and that of the POI's research. Make them ecstatic that they gave you a special second opportunity.

Hi,

I understand how this is a confusing and disappointing email. However, it can be interpreted in a different light... although you are outside what they consider a perfect fit they are still interested in you. This could still be a good opportunity for you. For instance, last year the lab that I'm an RA in really wanted to add several students. However, all the "perfect on paper" candidates were not able to make the cut. Thus, no one was accepted into the lab. It is for reasons like this, that professors may throw a wild card in (that would be). Anyways, whether you go or not, take it as a compliment!

Well, I just got my first ever interview invite, to BYU. Woot! I'm not an LDS member, that just happened to be one of the places where i shared similar research interests. I also still need to get an ecclesiastical endorsement (not from an LDS member), so I need to get on that.

Interviews will not be extended until first week in Feb at the earliest. Interviews will be held in March.
POI's will be extending interviews.
Over 250 applicants
5-7 spots
So...sit tight!

Wow. I've never gotten anything like that myself; I'd feel very conflicted if I did.

On one hand (as you said) you're probably not going to get in, but on the other, they don't just like you, they like you enough to extend an invite in spite of the fact that your research interests don't match. I think that last piece is huge: maybe you don't have much of a shot with this program, but you must have had one hell of an application for not one, but two people at this school to still express their interest despite this. Something in your app must have been pretty stellar for them to be willing to even consider overlooking this...which says a lot about your chances at a program where your interests with faculty *would* overlap. So while this might be a downer with respect to this program, I'd feel really confident about the strength of my application as a whole.

Fordham just popped up on gradcafe. Clinical invites extended today via email from program director.

if it's helfpul, I heard from Fordham counseling today too and it was by mass email. Good luck!

Hey all,

Just invited to Fordham via email from the program director. It's one of my top three, so excited!😀

Did anyone know that the program has been suspended, both MA and PhD this year? I actually applied for the PhD program, and called the school today to check my application status. They told me that they are not accepting any students this year and the program will be changed. However, in the invitation list, it looks like someone has an interview invitation from U of Maryland. Is it not from College Park? I should definitely have checked about the program before applying. My bad.

That is so bizarre because I called the the counseling and personnel services dept to check on the status of my app tuesday and they didn't mention this at all. Has anyone else heard this news from them?

I would suggest NOT keeping this post up. It is possible that a professor or student from UCONN could see this post. About your question, if you don't have any other interviews that day and if it wouldn't be too much of a financial burden, it really couldn't hurt to go. I mean, clearly they are interested in you, but they are being honest about what they are looking for. And it is possible that none of the other candidates will turn out to be good matches for various reasons. Best of luck with your decision.

Thanks for the info and congrats! Boo for me though - I didn't receive an email. Good luck!

Guess my Fordham spidey sense was right. 😀 Now if only it would work as well on all the other schools.....

Hi everyone! Big day for interview invites! If the person who got an interview to Albany and Boston U wouldn't mind letting me know who your POI is in a PM, that would be great. Those are my tops, but i'm glad someone got an invite! Congrats to everyone today!

Hi,
I was just wondering if you noticed a patterned in this years invites going out the same time as last years. Thanks.

If those who received invites for BU and Albany wouldn't mind PMing me your POI or if I could let you know mine and you could say yes or no I would GREATLY APPRECIATE IT! Congrats to your invites! ALBANY was my top choice :scared: I hope I hear something too.

My second year applying and no news yet 🙁

I feel your pain - I am in the same boat. Second year applying and no news yet here either. I keep telling myself that it is still early...

I would also appreciate hearing from the person invited to Boston. I can PM you my POI if you want.. Thanks.

I would still go. There's a chance the other two students will not accept the offer. And if that happens, you'd be the next in line.

Although, yes, the chances are probably slim. It'd still be good practice for the interviews. As long as it doesn't interfere with any other schools you are interested in and heard back from.

I would really appreciate a message from the person or people who heard from Albany. Congrats!

Would the Rochester and Clark people be willing to PM your POI, please?

Starting to feel so discouraged... I think I'll have to stop checking this thread for the weekend and try to think about something else.
