Accepted 🙂 🙂
Interviewed 11/5
Heard back yesterday

So happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone know how many people were put on the waitlist last year?

I got waitlisted and I'm trying not to get all you know - doooown

If you don't mind me asking, when did you interview?

I was really excited to get accepted to Stony Brook, yay!! But I've never taken biochem before and they strongly recommend taking it, they even made a point of this in the acceptance packet. Does anyone have any advice on this, could I get by with just getting a text book and reading it myself?

hey, i was just accepted as well!! i thought this my worst interview by far and was just hoping for a waitlist so this was an awesome surprise. i loved this school and they got back to me in under 2 weeks 🙂

You don't have to do that. If they already accepted you, why do you care? Biochem is not THAT important for medical school.

I agree. On the other hand, if you really want to be prepared for your first year, I would recommend that you pick up a fairly basic biochemistry book and read it.
Biochemistry is not nearly as difficult as organic chemistry and most of the course (as the title suggests) involves bringing together various ideas that you are already familiar with.
If I were in your place, I would just sit in on a biochemistry course in the spring and take notes... I would also celebrate because of my acceptance to a good school.
With that said, Congrats!

It seems like a couple of people who got acceptances received their packages in about 2 weeks. Is that normal? Because they told us 4 to 8 weeks and I haven't heard anything yet =\

They told our interview group that it could take a highly variable amount of time. The numbers were something like anywhere from 2 weeks to 10 weeks. So I would say that's normal.

is anyone interviewing between dec 18 and jan 25 thinking of rescheduliing/cancelling their interview date. I was originally up for 12/9 but had to postpone it and it went all teh way to jan 25! so if you are planning to reschedule/cancel please let me knowwww! thanks

Accepted today!!! On cloud 9...interview 11/15

I canceled my Jan 4th interview today at around 3pm...I hope it hasn't filled yet. Good luck!

I have a couple question (currently scheduling for an interview):

- When approximately do you leave from the interview? For flight purposes...

- What is the interview format?

And uh, info:
Submitted 10/1
Complete 10/8
Interview Invite 12/1

Hey guys, I handed in my supplemental, so I can't go back and look at it, but for those of you who remember or are filling it out right now:

Does it tell you to list the courses you plan to take or took in the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 semesters?

Or are the only free response portions the three essay questions?

I interviewed the day after you.. I hope I have a package waiting for me at home!!

Actually I screwed up the date, interviewed 11/16, so I suppose we interviewed the same day. I hope that package is waiting for you too...best of luck!

Accepted!

I'm very excited about this school (probably my top choice) but I'm just not sure if I'm ready to make a decision just yet. The acceptance package said I need to compile a letter of intent that I will attend Stony Brook, along with a deposit. Is this any different than other schools' acceptances that you're allowed to hold until May? Or is this actually committing to Stony Brook?

don't worry about it. i hadn't taken biochem either and i got through just fine. if you want go out and buy http://www.amazon.com/Lippincotts-I...=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1291526370&sr=1-4 to get a head start since it will come in handy once you're here

It seems that if they love you they'll accept you ASAP. But if you don't hear back that quickly don't worry there's still hope of an outright acceptance.

It's just like every other acceptance.

It's just like every other acceptance.

So do we have to send the letter of intent right away or can we wait till May? Do all schools do this? What if we love Stony Brook but still are "curious" about other schools? And how binding is the letter of intent?

Sorry if they are stupid questions (still awaiting my first acceptance!!)

Not stupid! I asked my pre-med advisor the same things. Basically, Stony Brook gives accepted students 2 weeks to write a letter of "intent to enroll". This letter is not binding, it is simply saying that at this point you want to hold a spot in the class. I believe most if not all schools require a letter like this.

I've been complete since the first week of August and still no word... Anyone else in the same boat? I think I definitely got looked over 🙁

I had my interview at Stony Brook 6 weeks ago, and still haven't heard anything back yet. Has anybody had a similar experience?

Complete 8/31 and no word. I actually haven't heard back from any SUNY schools. As a New Yorker, I'm a little insulted.

It's been a little over 3 weeks for me. This is my top choice and I have my fingers crossed for an outright acceptance.

I wouldn't say post-interview turnaround time is the greatest indicator of what your decision will be. There have been people accepted after less than 2 weeks and some after 8 weeks (according to word of mouth and last year's thread). They told me that the usual wait time is 4-8 weeks and it can take longer or shorter.

The only thing we can do is be patient. I hope they take longer for me if its a waitlist or a rejection, I expect my Fall term grades to be a nice boost in my application and proper grounds to send an update letter.

Good luck!

Yeah I interviewed october 10 and I haven't heard anything yet. I'm not sure if they haven't looked at my file yet or if they are just waiting to make a decision.

You need to send the letter with your deposit. I'm quite sure other schools do the same thing, stony brook might be a bit strange in that they make you write the letter yourself rather than signing a form letter. Honestly I don't remember at all whether i had to sign anything for my other acceptance.

It came a week later than yours but I'm not complaining!!

PS. What are you supposed to write in your "intention to enroll" letter?

mine had 2 sentences like "i intend to enroll. here is my deposit."

Accepted on Thursday 🙂. Had a letter waiting for me 1 week after my interview.

Does anyone know if the admissions office will be working at all next week? I really want to send an update letter in with my Fall grades, but final examinations are not over.

Congrats!! It's a good feeling to be accepted so soon after the interview, isn't it? It's like "Hell yeah, I must have totally nailed the interview."

Any current SB students reading this page? I was wondering about some of the more minute details of SB that weren't covered during the interview and tour. How do you like the community at SB? Is it competitive? What days are exams on? Are there good/comfortable/productive study areas? What neighborhood or town do most med students live in? And any other everyday stuff like that...Thanks for any input

Does anyone know if Stony Brook grades on a curve? Burning question I've had for a while...

Yeah. I wonder why this thread is lagging behind the progress of last year's threads. This must be a more secretive year!

Good luck to applicants today. It seems that people tend to get their acceptances from Stony Brook later in the week, on Thursday/Friday according to this and last year's thread. That's all speculation though...

yea stonybrook does grade on a curve, starting in second year. I interviewed there yesterday and the students who gave the tour told us that things get a bit more competitive when 2nd year starts, and courses are graded on a curve so that only a certain number can get high passes, etc.

Interesting...thanks for the info. I would prefer they didn't, but what are you gonna do.

ya only your first 2 classes (biochem and anatomy) are not graded on a curve. for my year (2013), biochem honors = 89, anatomy honors = 85. which are very doable. many people honor these two classes. after that every class is graded on a curve. generally Honor = 1 STD above mean, and high pass = half STD above mean. but some classes have more generous curves. pretty much everybody passes every class.

also i won't worry too much about 1st and 2nd year grades. they are not worth much for residency apps and class rank. your USMLE and 3rd and 4th year grades are much more important. the curve is nice in a way to keep me on my feet. so i know how I compare to the rest of the class.

1. competitive? i think so... many gunners here. there are many nice people too though.

2. what days are exams on? depends on the class it varies. so far no complaints.

3. most students live in: east setauket, port jefferson (nice town), stony brook. generally living is pretty good.

4. study areas: classrooms and lecture halls are nice. library is ok. (taken over by undergrads and doesn't open long enough) but many ppl study there anyway.

5. food: cafetaria is not bad. restaurants in the area, some will deliver.

6. in general the community is not bad. i like it here. no complaints.

Cool, thanks for the insight. I suppose as long as most everyone passes its not that big of a deal. I guess I'm under the impression that the curve fosters inter-student competition, but I think I'm in la-la land enough that I wouldn't let that bother me 🙂

Any updates recently?

I'd love to hear back, so I can save money by canceling a future interview.

Why's this thread so much slower than threads made in the past?

Yeah I noticed that too! Plus, there are only two entries for 2010 Interview Feedback. Isn't that weird??

Anyone else interviewing next week?

Got wait-listed, it took them approx 2 weeks after the interview to notify. Not sure why so quickly!? Does anybody know what percentage of students are accepted from the wait list at SBU?

has anyone received and interview invite lately...i havent heard anything from them and I really like this school ;(. Congrats to those accepted here!

Just got waitlisted.... super bummed. Anyone know how much the WL moves at this school and the approx. number of ppl who get accepted?
