Well guys, I was sitting in research when I realized I have a voicemail from Rochester, MN. 😱

I called Gina back and she offered me an acceptance!!! 😀 I am so unbelievably happy right now! Then to top it all off, she offered me a substantial merit scholarship. Good luck to everyone on hold and those waiting to hear back!

Ha, in my earlier posts i considered calling you out. Something like "inb4 rxnfiends acceptance". But then figured if u were put on hold i'd make u feel bad... looks like i could have gotten away with it ne way.

I would pay 1 dollar to actually see ur md apps filled out with what ur hiding from us. 45 mcat? Rhodes? Multiple pubs in nature?

Haha I figured you would actually say something about it...

But for real, I am really not hiding anything spectacular. No high MCAT, no Rhodes, no pubs. I am an athlete that has held gold medals for my state in the past however. I have really shown dedication to my activities and have a wide variety of interests that I really think came through in my application. I also credit some success to my actual interviews. I think I am a generally likable person who comes off as genuine and sincere. I know for sure that I ran across some socially awkward kids who couldn't hold a conversation with me, so I can't imagine them with their interviewers. I always felt as if my interviews went great and even got some very nice emails back saying how refreshing it was talking to me about life in general. I had a few interviewers mention that being from a state school has probably given me great insight into what else is out there besides the enclosed capsule that is HYPSM.

For those of you who received hold notifications, don't be discouraged! I know some of my classmates who received acceptances within weeks of holds, and then even more classmates who came in eventually off of the waitlist. Don't lose hope.

I'm still waiting & hoping for an LOR request...yes, I'm well behind the pack. Hoping for the best, though!

Let's put it this way: I will be in my 30's for most of medical school, and I am single. If I have to spend that time in Rochester, I will never get married (I'm female so this matters!).

Agreed. That is the main point that I'm struggling with (weather is not a problem for me). Dating within a class of ~50 will be risky.

Current students--what is your input on the dating scene at Mayo/Rochester? While we're at it, how many students per year end up couples matching?

Alright, word is in! Just got a rejection email in the wee hours of the morning. Its sad. This would be a great school to go to.

I'm super happy for all those of you who are heading to Mayo this coming fall. As for weather and dating, etc...keep in mind that Mayo (and other businesses in Rochester for that matter) employs A LOT of people, so you're not at all limited to dating classmates. Plus, the weather is cold, but with the amount of studying you'll be doing ... I don't think you'll really notice the cold all too much.

I had my application verified Nov 2, fee at May received Nov 3, rejected this morning (Nov 17). As far as my numbers go (undergrad and grad GPA & MCAT), they were both average for Mayo accepted students. All that being said, I know they go for much more than just numbers at Mayo.

I wasn't what they were looking for this year, but I'm hopeful for the rest of the applicants who are in the running that you get better news than I did this morning! Very best of luck to everyone 🙂

would your LOR happen to be received on 10/18th? I think there's a large group of us who completed on that date and have yet to hear anything.

I'd say ~15-20% of the class is dating within the school (same class or above/below). The dating scene outside of school is not like it is in bigger cities or college towns, but some classmates have had luck.

To summarize the match list, 19 Mayo, 6 Harvard, 3 Hopkins, 2 UCSF, and 1 to each of the following: WashU, Duke, Michigan, UCLA, Northwestern, Mount Sinai, UA Birmingham, Vanderbilt, NYP Cornell.

I'm going to guess that there are only 3 or so open (if that).

I would imagine that the majority (of not all) of the "x<8" openings may be due to people invited, but haven't yet scheduled their interview -- which means that all spots are accounted for.

To those still hoping for an interview, I could be wrong - but my source is reputable. g'luck.

I suppose the rejection should be coming any day now. I don't know what the deal it is with them rejecting a few people at a time and keeping the rest of us in limbo. If there really were only like 2-3 spots left, it'd make sense just to reject people. Are they holding a few people back just in case some people don't take their interview invite?

True. I heard the second looks are really when you make the real decision where you are going though because you get a feel for your new classmates. I think its worth the relatively small investment. 😛

Sorry if it came off as callous, but like someone else said, I did say it was a firstworldproblem and was semi-joking. I also gave information on when second look weekend is for anyone wondering since I called Gina to ask. My bad. 🙂
