Interesting. The only reason I can imagine as to why UTSOMSA's appeal efforts did not succeed is that the LCME decided that the changes should have already been implemented, not about to be implemented. Maybe they are taking a harder line on things now because of the SJB incident.

Oh well. Yesterday this news was a little unsettling. Today I'm actually glad for it, because like the Alberta dean you quoted said--not only will this fast-track the planned changes, but they are going to be pulling out all the stops to make sure this school is phenomenal.

UTSOMSA is and always has been a very high caliber institution, and this is an insult to their pride in some ways. It is not representative of the quality of the education students get there. A decent analogy would be Mack Brown's Longhorns last year. The longhorns are a high caliber program, and it is simply unacceptable for them to have losing seasons. Even if it takes a season to adjust to all the changes, you can rest assured they will do whatever to takes to ensure that never happens again. They'll be stronger than ever.

Agreed! It looks like the UTHSCSA admin were already working on it. This will just compel them to work faster and make sure they dot their i's and cross their t's. In fact, I can see incoming med students benefiting from it. 🙂

I fail to see the benefit in the school being placed on probation. The school could have become even more phenomenal without having to go through probation if they would have listened to the recommendations from their visit back in 2003.

I'm not saying the school is crappy. I think I will send them an update letter to let them know that I'm still interested and I don't think there is a possibility that they will lose accreditation. I'm just saying that I can't see the positive to being put on probation. It sounds like empty words that a dean would say not based in any sort of reality

as an oos person repping chicago, i am officially accepted to the school of medicine for the class of 2016! i am ecstatic beyond words!!!

anyone else?

congrats! what did you think about your interview and what were your numbers if you ndont mind?

Congrats, I'm so jealous! (not that you're accepted, but that you get to find out now... I have to wait until Nov 15 and possibly Feb 1)

I didn't mean to make it sound like I was spinning it to say that it's actually good this happened. I was just pointing out a silver lining, which is that this is now a huge impetus to fix whatever the LCME wants them to and get rid of whatever resistance or feet-dragging was taking place before. They are going to take huge steps to repair their reputation (although the quality of physicians they produce is as good as ever... its a PR thing now) and 10 years from now they will probably be even better than they would have been if this had never happened.

I just did a whole rant about how LCME shouldn't be critiquing schools' teaching style/curriculum to begin with over in this incident's related thread in pre-allo. Tl;dl=Step 1 scores speak for themselves, let schools explore and tweak with different curriculum however they want. If they try something outlandish and it is a wild success, then others can follow suit (if they want). If they try something outlandish and it doesn't work, then they'll be backtracking like the dickens because a significant drop in USMLE scores would be wholly unacceptable.

Congrats! If you don't mind my asking, did you find out via email, phone, or mail first?

Awesome! I know you've gotten a couple questions already, but when was your interview date?

to answer some questions: i'm a senior at a big ten school. gpa is a 3.9 and mcat is in mid-30s. i have a wide variety of research (industry and academic) and pretty good volunteering. i interviewed mid-august and i LOVED the interview and the school. everyone was really relaxed and friendly. i got an email offering acceptance today, but they said i'd be receiving something formal in the mail soon. hope that helped.

i have not yet decided whether i will be attending...but it's definitely a top choice. the in-state tuition rate is beckoning haha.

to everyone, good luck!! applying to med school is long and miserable, but it's going to be worth it!

I interviewed here on Sept 20th (I think that was the date). I was really impressed with the school. I got the impression that everyone really pulls together and that this school really takes care of their students. It's a shame about their probation status, but they administration seems like they will have that nipped in the bud quickly. The thing that really stuck out to me was that the students and administration were all so happy and had great attitudes. Dr. Jones seems like a class act too. I'd go here in a heartbeat.

Is it a standard san antonio procedure to have an MS1 send a personal email to you after your interview (Like 2 weeks after)? The email ofcourse being about whether I have any questions and if I'd like to know anything then the MS1 will gladly answer anything. I just got one of those emails from an MS1 whom I'm sure I haven't met at all. So, just wondering if this is standard procedure or if San antonio somehow really likes me 😀 😀 I ofcourse want it to be the latter 😛

Its standard. Got that as well.

Thanks for the info Cel. I am glad you had a good impression and wish you good luck with acceptance there. I have applied here several times, but guess I'm just not what they're looking for. However, I still have a significant interest in the school. With that being said, can you tell me approximately how many medical students you met during the interview at SA? Also, what makes you say Dr. Jones seems like a class act?? Just wondering what it's like to be interviewed here. Seeing as I may not ever experience it first hand, if I don't receive an II. Thanks and again good luck!

Hang in there! Some of the MS1's I spoke to at the mixer after my interview didn't get an interview until late November, and one of them was even interviewed the second week of December.

As for my experience, there were about 50 people interviewing, maybe as few as 40. But that was the second interview in August, so the pool might have shrank a bit now that the OOS students are mostly done. In reference to Dr. Jones being a class act, he was generally charismatic, well organized, and seems to care about individuals and their concerns.

One thing he said that had a HUGE impact on me was that they take VERY seriously the responsibility they have to accept students who will be happy there for 4 years....that they understand that their decisions directly affect YOUR life and accepting students who aren't a good fit is extremely detrimental to those students. He said is much more eloquently...but you get the gist.

I met with and talked with approximately 8 MS IV's, a bunch of MS I and MS II's bc I showed up an hour early to the interview, and no MS III's. An MS IV interviewed me as well. He gave me his email add and asked me to keep in touch. Another doctor interviewed me, and I don't think he liked me too much, but that I'm not using that experience to judge the school. He was 30 min late to the interview and had more to do than contend with me.

As far as Dr. Jones goes, I can tell his primary interest is the students. I'll give examples and my impression as well. He personally presented the curriculum and facts about the school for about an hour. He stayed after that to answer my questions and did his best to reassure the students that they will be taken care of. After the interview was over he sent out an email thanking us for coming and asked us to contact him directly if we had any questions. He also sent out the email to us for the probation problem. I feel so bad for him because I got the vibe that really cares and it is painful to go on probation from the LCME. He introduced the MS IV students that were in the question panel to us and he was very proud of them.

I have been responsible for and hired/fired/trained many people. In my opinion, the best way you can tell how good a job people are going to do is by the attitude they exhibit. Most all the faculty and students at UTHSCSA were optimistic, warm, and had great attitudes about the work they do. That is why I think that is a great school.

Thanks for the insight people. Funnily enough, Dr. J was the one to recommend SDN to me months ago. So even if I never receive an II, I can still appreciate him for that.

Wow, a school administrator actually having a positive opinion of SDN--shocking!

Out of sheer curiosity, if you already knew him, why did you ask my opinion about him?

Are you faculty perhaps?

I know this has been mentioned before, but I couldn't find it. Why do school administrators/pre-med advisors hold a negative opinion of SDN?

If I get into any medical schools this year, it will be primarily on the basis of information/MCAT study schedules/etc that I picked up from this website. Heck, finding SDN is how I became a postbacc premed student again in the first place. :luck:

So far, only one person has admitted to being accepted on this forum. This leads me to believe that only a few have been accepted so far, but I would expect to see more acceptances a week from tomorrow. Kittenmittens7 posted that she got accepted last Tuesday, so that would place the next group probably a week from tomorrow. Other than that, TMDSAS has a loose timeline on their website that UTSA SOM doesn't seem to be completely adhering to.

Most other Texas schools have already completed at least some of their early acceptance decisions. Others have already begun to accept OOS. The timeline suggests somewhere around Nov. 15th for Texas resident decisions, but keep in mind that all acceptances are rolling.

Disclaimer: This is purely speculation! If anyone has a definitive answer, please share with us and ease our suffering.

Is there a list somewhere of all the interview dates? When does UTSA stop interviewing?

Thanks

just got an II....PHEW!!

did anyone else have issues with the links on the II email? I can see to open the page with the interview day schedule, housing info etc.

Hi All,

I just received an interview invite, but the date they offered me, I'm already out of town, and I can't reschedule my travel plans. The e-mail they sent says that,

"Please note that we are unable to reschedule interview dates at this time, but will accommodate any applicants traveling from out of state. All reschedule requests must be made via email to ------------------------------"

I already sent an e-mail requesting my interview be rescheduled, but I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with rescheduling interviews with UTHSC? Or are they going to pull my interview because I can't make it?

Thanks for any help/feedback!

I think it just gets a bit of a bad stereotype from the pre-allo forum (I mean come on... have you seen it lately?). Most people who seriously look at these forums for a while and look beyond pre-allo will find some pretty amazing stuff. But I can see how foreign students or those who just don't have a good nose for BS could be led to believe some pretty ridiculous things. Mostly it's "on the internet" which by default makes a lot of people skeptical.

So far, only one person has admitted to being accepted on this forum..

I know a few people from my school who have been accepted. They are OOS of course. Few OOS students and apply and few are accepted... there probably won't be much action, other than occasional bursts of excitement from OOState'ers, until Nov 15.

Is there a list somewhere of all the interview dates? When does UTSA stop interviewing?

Their website says they interview every Monday through "mid-December". That probably means 12/12 is the last day cause I'm pretty sure they are done for Christmas by 12/19.

I got an interview invite for 11/21. Since it's toward the end, does that mean I'm pretty much interviewing for a wait-list position?

If there are only 2 interview weeks left, it is definitely time for a LOCI...

No, not at all. On the contrary, many current students matched here and had interviews in late november/december.

Got an email saying UTSA is on probation. That's a real bummer

This is old news on the forum... read the previous page and a half. It's not a big deal. At all.

So why did they send me the exact same email twice (on 10/14 and now on 10/25)?? 😕

I think the first one was to everyone who had already interviewed there. The one today was to everyone who applied

Correct. I only got the one today.

Got my hopes up and everything...

Mine Too! I was like "finally!" then just a bunch of junk we all already knew.... why they messing with us like that? 😱

No, I'm not faculty there. Believe it or not, Dr. J used to work out at the gym that I worked at. To my regret, I didn't spend much time getting to know him. When you said he was a class act, it made me wonder more about what it was like to interview there and how he presented the school info to you.

Did the email to all the interviewees have the powerpoint slides?

I liked that they are being transparent (if you aren't on SDN and you're not from San Antonio, chances are that you would show up to your interview having no idea about the probation) and that they provided more details about their rebuttal than the media articles provide.

I did think it was funny that this line is in the slides:
No school on LCME probation has ever failed to reverse probation and lose accreditation
That's a little outdated...

They presented everything in a way that shows how well-rounded the faculty and students there are and that everyone tries to keep a proper perspective. It's an outstanding program that is not overly heavy on either research or primary care agendas. They're only heavy on producing great clinicians. They really want each student to find their "calling" independently, and the school's resources and faculty are dedicated to to helping each student identify what they love and then becoming as qualified as possible to go into that field.

They only thing about the interview day that felt even the slightest bit contrived was how much they talked about their Harlingen campus.

Yes the powerpoint presentation was included in the email a week ago to interviewees, but I missed that little gem.

Anybody recently get any interviews from UTHSCSA? Wondering if I should continue anticipating. I finished my app early August.

Hi All!! Long time lurker, first time poster.

Anyone got an II on Nov. 7th leaving from or going through Houston on the way back? Looking for a possible ride back to Houston.

PM Me Please

Wow, its pretty quiet in here. Well, I'm freaking out about my first interview next week. Having an interview on the 7th, do I have any chance pre-matching on the 15th or is that just too soon? Has anyone ever had an interview a week or 2 before pre-match and gotten an offer? May also ask question in RoT thread .

Anyone else have an interview here on the 7th thats leaving from the houston area or at least passing through it?

Anectodally I have heard of many people interviewing a couple weeks, a week, or only days before getting their pre-match offer.

I have heard from multiple admissions people at multiple school interviews that what they do is rank you on a list with all the other applicants from every interview. This ranking happens the day after your interview (A&M, both Techs), the day of your interview (Baylor), or 5 days after your interview (SW). Although I am not sure about San Antonio specifically, if you are interviewing a week before 11/15 then I would guess that you are in the same position as everyone else who interviewed earlier.
