2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats on the Loma Linda VA.

I also just got the same email from them with the same 2 interview dates. I think this means that they probably don't interview a lot of people if they are only interviewing on 2 separate dates.

In terms of Bellevue, I have heard that they interview a ton of people (probably over 100) so i wouldn't worry if you haven't heard from them. Alot of this is random.

I have 5 interviews scheduled so far. My goal has been to reach 7-8 so this is turning out better than I expected. The VAs are taking to me very well. Unfortunately, there are already overlaps and i have to try to negotiate different dates with sites...so annoying. I also have not heard from my top 3-4 sites yet so not sure how i'm going to fit them in now.

Congrats to you too! I agree, they probably aren't interviewing too many people. Years past (thank you appic website!) it looks like they've interviewed 40-45... last year was 40... for 5 spots. I'll take those odds! Maybe I'll see you at the interview... 🙂

I think the odds are okay b/c they rank more than 5 in the end and we'll have several interviews to go on. I wonder if they are interviewing less than 40 this year b/c that means they will be interviewing 20 for each day--seems like a lot...who knows? Loma Linda location is not ideal for me but maybe its beautiful out there?

Somebody once told me that thats a place where if you pull in an R-O1 for 1.5 million, your divison head comes up to you, pats you on the back, and asks you why it wasnt for 2.5 million...? 😉

I'm not sure if that was meant to be encouraging or not but I was surprised to get it though very grateful!

Just wondering if anyone has heard from or have any idea when we might expect to hear from:
- University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antionio
- Texas Children's
- Tulane
- Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center

Texas Children's sent an email saying they weren't reviewing applications until early December and would notify by Dec. 16th. My friend heard from them last year on the 15th so I'm assuming I will have to wait to hear from them until the very last minute!

Yeah, 20 does seem like a lot each day... but either way, I'm excited! Re: location, although I haven't spent much time IN Loma Linda, I've spent time in the surrounding areas and... beautiful is NOT what I would call it . It definitely is not the best location, but it is what it is!

Just got 2 email rejections within minutes of one anohter....Westchester Jewish Family Services & Devereux Institute (Philadelphia) 🙁

Just received email invitation for open house/ interview. Dates same as listed in brochure (1/6, 1/11, 1/14) 😀

I've noticed a couple of ommissions from the list. I have an interview at Nationwide for the Clinical Child Track (only the DD track is listed) and a rejection from the consortium in Nebraska (I applied to Munroe Meyer & Boys Town). I haven't heard anything from my other sites.

Just got an interview with American Univ. CC. (It feels a little weird posting this knowing others didn't get an interview. I'm sure others have felt this way too. This is a strange process.)

I'm waiting to hear from MO neuro as well. As always, if we haven't yet received a rejection, then we're still in the running.

Yeah, I'm a tad confused by the way they're conducting interviews. I've heard from the Adult Neuro track at UM-DHP. I did indicate on my application supplement that I was interested in being considered for both the VA and the DHP slots. However, what I understand is that you are only interviewed for one (but can rank both??), based on what appears to be your primary interest.

I'm not quite sure how it works, either, and I also applied to both sites. I also haven't heard from the North TX VA, whose unofficial notification deadline was yesterday.

If I hadn't already received emails from other programs, I'd seriously be worried that APPIC had an incorrect address listed for me.

Neither really, just a friendly jab at their environnment from someone who used to be an professor/investigator there. Wouldnt really be a place for me, but to each their own.

How/when did you hear from Worcester State? I'm eager to hear back from them. thanks!

I heard from them by phone yesterday - I think they were calling local people early because they're trying to schedule a first interview date for locals on 12/13. The call was from the program director, so I assume they'll be doing rolling interview offers🙂

I only checked the HTVMH line, so I assume my app only goes to them, as their would be no reason to send mine over to the UM-DHP folks/training cordinators.

The brochure states that you are placed (funded) at one site, but can do one rotation outside the funding site. My understanding from the supplemetary sheet is that you are indicating you want to be considered by both, but ultimately, you will only be chosen by one. I do not think you can rank both, because you're only gonna be interviewed by one.

Anyone hear from the following places yet?

Northern Cali VA
Long Beach VA
UCLA counseling
Sharp Healthcare

I'm still waiting on 14 sites (including these), but i really like the above sites so let me know if you hear either way....

Are there any children folks out there who have heard nothing from: Duke, SUNY Upstate, and/or Children's Memorial? I have been hearing about acceptances for some time now...just wondering if there are others out there in the same boat. Thanks!

Just for clarification, you can rank any site/track you want. Even if you do not interview at a site at all, you can still rank them. The chances that they ranked you (and high enough for you to match) are almost non existent, but you CAN rank them. Last year I only had two interviews but ranked my top 5 sites. Figured it couldn't hurt, right? It's not like we pay more for ranking more, and we already paid to apply!

I dont understand, if you were rejected by the site, how is there ANY possibility that they could/would rank you. I dont know what you have been told, but a rejection means "we arent going to rank you."

Im gonna stick with my point here and say that you only rank sites that didn't reject you.

Just got an invite from West LA VA. Invite was by email. Dates are 1/4, 1/6, and 1/11.

I agree that one should NOT count in any way of matching to a site that did not offer an interview to the applicant. However, it does not hurt to try. This is part of an interview rejection email I received:

Please note that we may decide to include applicants such as yourself on our match list, in spite of the fact that you were not invited for an interview. You will most likely be ranked behind those applicants who were invited.

Could someone post the dates that LA Ambulatory Care Center is offering? I've neither been invited nor rejected (as posted earlier), but I'd like to know what dates might be in play.

Thanks!

You're both essentially correct. I believe the point IsItOver is making is that you CAN rank a site that you did not interview with, while your point of whether you SHOULD rank such a site is also valid. The comment was probably clarifying on what you said earlier about not being able to rank a track a person doesn't get an interview with.

What a day. No news (invites or rejections) at all. Is it me or does this feel like the longest week ever?

Maybe I'm way off here, but this is what it looks like to me.

If you haven't received an offer, but you know that others have received rejections, you stand a good chance of getting an offer at some later date... the "no news is good news" notion.

If, however, you have heard that people have gotten offers and you haven't gotten an offer, you stand a good chance of a rejection... the "no news is bad news" notion.

Of course, I could be way off, but this is the philosophy I'm adopting. This way I won't be disappointed when the 5 places I haven't heard from, but have offered interviews to others, send me my rejection letter.

My personal experience is 50/50: one site (same track) that others had heard from before me still sent an invitation, while one sent a rejection. I truly do think it's entirely site-dependent.

Anyone else just get an email from Phoenix Children's Hosp that started with "Applicant Interview Notification" in huge bold letters at the start of the e-mail but was actually a rejection? I kind of expected a rejection from them as they started sending out invites quite a while ago, but the first three words made me think I got an interview... It seems like it's one step short of saying "INTERVIEW!!! You don't have one! :meanie:"

Ah well... I'm at 4 interviews, 3 rejections, and 1 site withdrew from the match (late loss of funding)

That's terrible. 😡 ... at least not as bad as the "oops that interview wasnt for you" business i was reading about earlier, but STILL. Hang in there

Me, still WAITING.... 3 rejections, no interviews... 13 sites to go.

No word from Duke on my end either and I am guessing it is a rejection since they sent out invites awhile ago...

That's pretty ridiculous that Phoenix sent that weird email. You would think that these places put as much thought into those types of things as we do. 4 Interviews is good so keep your head up :xf:

Thanks! I'm thrilled with my interviews thus far but I seem to be getting the weird rejections (aside from the 'that invite wasn't meant for you' place - didn't apply there). I have one normal rejection, one that came at 8pm on a Sunday, and then this one 🙄 Still waiting on 8! (or 9, if you count two separate tracks at one site as two different applications)

I suppose I should be over being surprised when people who are supposedly so in tune with others (clinical psychologists!) do totally thoughtless things like send rejections that sound like invites, but alas, I am not.

Anyone heard from:

Children's National
Pacific Clinics
The Guidance Center
Children's Hospital LA

I don't think I've seen them mentioned.

I don't see why they just don't send out the rejections already. This is mean; letting us hold on to a sliver of hope. Well, the 15th isn't far away!

Children's National hasn't notified yet - and are you talking about The Guidance Center in Leavenworth KS?

No word from Children's Hospital LA over here. I think either their APPIC page or their website says applicants will be notified *on* Dec 15. Not sure if it was a typo (most say *by* Dec 15), but I'm guessing we won't hear for a while. Good luck! :luck:

No, in Long Beach CA.

I really hope they notify earlier! My friend applied there last year and it was one of the last sites to notify. They also offered her only one date, which overlapped with another interview she had in a different city and she wasn't able to make it.

For those of you who received invites from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine & Public Health, did you apply to the Health Psychology or General Psychology track? Was the invite personalized?

Thank you for indulging my neurosis!

North bronx healthcare network just did the following to a friend of mine:

so here is what happened
they sent me an email of rejection, then an email saying the person is trying to retrieve the email sent. then i got another rejection email from their site.i think they were confused. they thought they sent me an invite by mistake
then they tried to retrieve it
and then they sent a rejection
and then i got another email saying:

Good afternoon,

I would like to apologize for the confusion on my end. I received a list of names and your name was on it. Unfortunately you did receive a letter of rejection. Again I want to take this time to apologize for the error I made and I wish you all the best on your journey to a successful career. If you have any questions you can e-mail me anytime.

GEEZ LOUISE! 😡

I'm also waiting on Pacific Clinics and not a peep yet.

Got a rejection by personalized email from West LA VA - I think it was the adult track (if they had tracks).

Wow...I think this is the year of epic fail rejections!

Today I received an interview from Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and a rejection from UC Berkeley CC, both via email.

I've been lurking for awhile...time for my first post! Is anyone else out there applying for gero tracks or generalist tracks with gero rotations? I'm 2 for 3 right now with interviews at West LA (gero track) and the Minneapolis VA (generalist).

Im gonna stick with my point here and say that you only rank sites that didn't reject you.

Our DCT told us that some sites rank all of the people who applied even if they didn't interview them so they still have a chance at filling their positions in the unlikely case that none of the people they interview match there (which does happen). We were told to rank all of the sites we applied to that we were interested in with the ones we interviewed with first.

hi - does anyone know if sites will accept multiple interns from the same university?

There are so many factors at play, it is hard if not impossible to predict if a site in particular is more/less likely rank multiple applicants from a particular program. I do know that sites that previously took someone from a program (and had a good experience), are usually more likely to take from that program again....but does that mean they will take more than one...who knows.

I took part in an APA site review and one of the questions involved examining both the diversity of the applicants applying to the site (they want a variety) and the diversity of the interns (while less under a site's control, they want a variety). Will this impact ranking at the end of the day....who knows, but I guarantee you that any training director who has gone through an APA-acred review knows they will see this question.
