Something I dont quite understand is how people have managed to figure out how to city hop from one interview spot to the next, especially since interviews role in slowly of the course of a month, often times even longer.

For example, I have 2 interview offers so far (only 1 rejection) and have not heard a peep from the 14 other sites on my list. I heard from the first site over two weeks ago, so I bought my ticket because the price will go up (generally) the longer I wait. Obvioulsy, I bought a round trip. I then got a second interview 5 days later. This time, I waited to buy, hoping maybe I would hear from another site so i could simply by a one-way ticket from that city to another interview city. Well, I've waited almost 2 weeks and have heard nothing else. I am now tempted to buy this ticket because the round trip is not all that bad right now, but if i wait much longer it will be. You guys see what im saying? How do people do this?

Since I dont have interviews yet, I dont have anything SOLID planned, but here is what I am thinking: I have a ticket booked to California/Hawaii currently for non-internship reasons (December-Early Jan)... I plan to wait until I hear from ALL of my sites, then either: Change my ticket so that instead of coming straight back to the east coast I hit interview stops (coordinating dates so that, for example, all my mid west ones are together, all the california ones together, all the southern ones together)... I will go to as many interviews in one trip as possible, just booking multiple stops... Then I'll return home. If, for example I have a group of interviews at the beginning of the month, and a group at the end, I will make a stop at home in between. Or I will come home following hawaii, then leave again for trips... UGH.. I really hope my sites notify BEFORE december 15!!! But yeah, My plan is to wait until I've heard from all sites, then book. Expensive as that may be. It seems that it will be cheaper than doing several separate round trip tix... Am I crazy? (she asks a group for future psychologists...)

As a side note, if you are a more cautious person, you can book flights on Southwest. You can change flights pretty easily on Southwest, as there usually isn't a change fee. You just have to pay the price difference if the flight you're changing to is more expensive (or they'll give you a credit if the flight you're changing to is less expensive). I've had to do it before. I bought my flights for christmas/new years on southwest in case I had to change them because of interviews.

I agree. I don't see how we can book flights for January without knowing where the most destinations are. As long as you are booking 2-3 weeks in advance (21 days used to be the rule, it might have changed since my intensive business travel years ago), it shouldn't be that bad.

I have 6 interviews so far, and 5 of them are out of state. Unfortunately, the sites typically (at least in my case) have 3 or so days to choose from, often a week apart, and this is pretty much not negotiable because they have a program, open house, group interview etc on that day. so as a result I have my 5 interviews spread out over 3 weeks in January. I have two of them in the same state but two days apart. The cost of 3 hotel nights bites, but it is still cheaper (and much less hectic) than two round trips in one week to the same destination midway across the country. I also tried not to schedule interviews in different states back to back and did my best to free up some Mon and Fri, because I don't know what else is coming. Not great, given missed classes, practicum, etc, but we only can do our best.

I am thinking to do all my booking on the 16 th (when I hear from all sites). When booking my advice would be to compare the hotel prices with the price of a round trip to make sure you wont' pay twice as much for a round trip across the country versus spending a couple of nights in a modest motel 6 (just kidding). Hopefully we can schedule our time wisely for us and have understanding supervisors and others. I have heard of someone who had a bunch of interviews last year but had to fly back after each interview, because her prac required her to be there each week. I feel so bad for that person, and hope this won't happen to us 😀

I booked all of my interviews in January, though I think I had all but one of my dates set by mid-December. It was admittedly easier prior to the online submissions because many sites stuck with a November 1st and most of the others had November 15th deadlines. This setup allowed for non-local people to squeeze in a few December times without getting totally screwed. I had one site give me 5 days notice because they screwed up their slots and only had an early date left....thankfully I was in the region and I could re-book my Southwest ticket to my next place.

Definitely take advantage of Southwest if you can, the change fee at other airlines is often $150. I tried to get I tried to get MON, WED, FRI interviews and fly in between the cities on TUES and THUR. Having the WED dates really helped with travel, and most sites had slots open because everyone grabbed the Friday slots first. It got a bit hairy because I had to change at least 1 or 2 interview times, but they understood. I managed 3 sets of MON, WED, FRI interviews and then squeezed in a Tuesday one of the weeks.

Hello all! First posting from a newbie! 🙂 I have been rejected from Patton State Hospital. Patton State Hospital announced they got around 219 applications. Last year they got 168.

People in my program have interviews at FCC Butner, Wisconsin DOC, have a "pre-interview" at Liberty Healthcare Forensic Training Program, Beatrice Hospital in Nebraska, and Kern State Prison (in a consortium and don't know the name) in California. I have been told Butner sends rounds of invitations.

All responses have been email. Both Wisconsin and Liberty came after 7pm last Friday.

I'm wondering this too. My DCT says to bring CVs, and business cards if you have them.

Also, in my case, I have a manuscript that was listed as "in preparation" on the CV I submitted with the AAPI. We just submitted it for publication and I've begun work on another unrelated manuscript, so I want to be able to give an updated CV to my interviewers that reflects those changes. Are those big enough changes that it seems worthwhile/reasonable??

I'd be really interested to hear thoughts on this question too. I assumed that the interviewers would have everything they needed from us via the application portal, and thus hadn't really planned to take anything along the lines of CV or business cards. But it's not a bad idea if there's a chance TDs or interviewers might ask for that material.

I'm planning on bringing a few CVs, business cards, and a notepad so I can take notes to help for ranking/reminding purposes later as well as questions I want to ask (because I WILL forget what I wanted to ask the moment I arrive 🙄). That will all be in a nice folder (not like a school folder) and I think I'll put it in a small briefcase so I can have my wallet, keys, phone, etc and only have to carry one thing...and maybe a coat/scarf depending on the weather. Not that I've carefully analyzed (aka over thought) every little thing....

I wouldn't take CVs to hand out to interviewers. I'm not sure they can use an updated version for their ranking purposes as a matter of fairness. In order to consider one person's achievements after application due date, they'd have to solicit that info from everyone.

Business cards were good to have. I did have interviewers give me theirs and specifically ask me for mine, so I obliged. Not sure if they should have done that or not given that additional contact with the site between interviews and match day is not encouraged.. To be safe, I would just not initiate an exchange with anyone involved in selections.

I will definitely bring copies of my CV (not necessarily "updated" since the application deadline though). You never know exactly who will interview you, and there's a chance one of the people who does has not received your information. Remember, you're not just interviewing one person (i.e. the Training Director), but often numerous people. It's always possible that someone was switched last minute to interview you, and was never given the chance to read up on you.

Business cards (if you have them), copies of CV, notepad, and bottled water sounds good to me. And I also plan on having a "cheat sheet" for each site I will interview at, which will have the unique features of the site as well as my questions for the interviewers/interns. Obviously I won't necessarily whip this out during actual interviews, but maybe have it to brush up on before the interviews begin and during a break at some point.

I will definitely bring copies of my CV (not necessarily "updated" since the application deadline though). You never know exactly who will interview you, and there's a chance one of the people who does has not received your information. Remember, you're not just interviewing one person (i.e. the Training Director), but often numerous people. It's always possible that someone was switched last minute to interview you, and was never given the chance to read up on you.

I suppose that could happen, but given the fact that the applications are electronic and the portal is accessible anywhere, the person conducting the interview would likely get your information from there rather than ask you. If you want to have a copy or two to refer to between interviews or in the event of something like this then it won't hurt. I wouldn't just offer copies.

I agree. I'm not saying to offer copies of your materials. Just to have some available in case of these rarer circumstances. I think it's better to be safe than sorry.

We don't know that everyone will be able to go on to the portal and see our CV, as most sites will have a couple staff members interview you in addition to the TD and interns. Sometimes due to busy schedules, illness, whatever - a staff member may have to interview you on shorter notice. Just a thought.

They are nothing to freak over. No one will expect you to have them and I highly doubt anyone has ever scored points for having them.

That's what I was thinking too, re: bringing CVs. I wasn't going offer it to anyone, but if they happen to ask for one, I'd like to have one to give!

QUESTION: Regarding some topics that may be covered during the interview (or after, as I've heard in years past). From what I understand...applicants and sites cannot share any specific info about ranking (mainly where one plans on ranking the other). However, I've heard that it's ok for sites and applicants to say yes I will be ranking you/no I will not be ranking you (with the denial generally coming from sites). Also, I've heard you can say a little bit about how you feel about the site in comparison with others (ie: I like this site very much or It's one of my favorites) as long as you don't say specifically where they will be ranked or making it painfully obvious (ie: This is my absolute favorite site). This second area (saying a little about how you feel about the site in comparison to other sites) seems a little....fishy to me. You could kind of hint at roughly where the site might ranked for you, which could give you an unfair advantage over others who do no make any similar comparison.

Thoughts? This very well may be a pile of misinformation so I thought I'd check and see if anyone heard about this. I don't see a problem with sites or applicants saying that an applicant/site will or won't be ranked, but anything outside of that yes or no feels a little murky to me. Some sites will ask for your matching number anyway (even though it's on your app) which seems to be a dead give away that you are going to be ranked. Anyway...what are your thoughts??

I'd recommend bringing a few copies of your CV, a notebook, a list of questions for each site, and if possible a cheat sheet about the site (rotations, faculty bios, etc). I liked to review the rotation information and faculty bios during breakfast, a nice refresher once you get into the thick of interview season. I liked having a standardized list of questions so I could compare apples to apples. I'd add a few to each about specific site topics.

I got an interview at Harvard/MGH for the BMed track awhile ago, but the email said they do rolling intivites, so don't worry prematurely. I also applied to Mississippi (BMed) but I haven't heard anyrhing yet.

We've always just had the generic-type "business cards" (name and phone/fax number of the site, sometimes with a blank at the top to write your own name). The primary purpose of these cards was as an appointment reminder for the clients, though, as the back of the cards had space to write the time/day/date of the scheduled assessment.

The only actual business cards I've ever used were those of my professor.

As for what I'll be bringing to interviews, probably something along the lines of T4H's suggestions--notebook (w/ lists of questions I'd like to ask as well as key info to include in my responses to commonly-asked interviewer questions), "cheat sheet" to review before/between interviews, and a few CV copies just in case.
