2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'd say there is a decent chance you got an interview, since rejection emails have already gone out.

If I were in your shoes, so to speak, I would wait to Friday morning and then contact them. That seems reasonable....you could state in your email what they stated on their brochure and just say that you are checking in and what not on the status of your application.

Good luck 🙂

Has anyone received an interview invite from Children's Hospital Boston?? I'm debating whether or not its appropriate to email to ask. On one hand, the brochure for the site says the following:
@font-face { font-family: "Arial"; }p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; } "Applicants should e-mail Ms. Berne during the week of December 6 to see if they are invited for an interview, and if so, to make arrangements for an appointment."

On the other hand, they sent an email saying this:
"I am writing to let you know that your application is in our cue. I also wanted to let you know that ideally we will be notifying applicants the week of December 6 if they have been invited for an interview."

What are peoples thoughts? Is it appropriate to email? Or should I wait, since i still haven't heard anything, but am getting the sense that they are doing "rolling rejections" UGH!

This is my first time posting on here but this is an area that really makes me angry. There really does seem to be something really off about the no graduating without completing an apa or appic internship and yet there aren't enough sites to cover it. I am not a traditional age student, which is code for older, and I can't afford to wait a year if I do not match somewhere. If I don't match I may just have to bag the whole thing and become certified in something else and become an LPC with a specialty. I sure do not want to do this but not everyone gets matched and that's a reality. Maybe I should look for an attorney while checking my email every two seconds!!
Thanks

This WILL happen if the imbalance is not corrected; only a matter of time. First, someone whose program requires them to complete an APA-accredited internship will sue their program for not providing that internship. Then, students and institutions will sue the APA.

Sites where an interview has been offered

  • University of Michigan

I looked back through the posts, and I believe this University of Michigan interview is for the IHA (Institute for Human Adjustment) site. I applied to the counseling center site and almost had a heart attack. To my knowledge, the UM counseling Center has not sent out any information either way yet. Just a friendly edit!

Do it. APA doesn't listen to reason but they do listen to lawsuits.

There's actually a movement to abolish internship entirely. When it was initially established most students had never seen a patient before internship, and it was their first exposure to clinical work. Now, students are getting 400-1000+ hours of direct contact during their programs. Interesting, though a laughably terrible solution to the internship crisis.

The idea of getting rid of the internship sounds similar to the idea of getting rid of the post doc year (at least slightly). While nixing the internship would be ridiculous, I also think getting rid of post doc hours is also not necessarily a good option. I understand the idea of wanting to get licensed immediately so you can start working and paying back loans, but I also think it helps the profession to have yet another year being supervised and getting good clinical experience and knowledge. Probably a topic for another thread, but I've got no internship notifications to complain about so I thought this would be good for now. 😳

I haven't heard from them yet either and plan on waiting. It seems that last year they sent out rejection e-mails on Monday and interview invites on Tuesday and Wednesday. I'm hoping that since we haven't heard anything yet, this means we're still in the running for an interview and will hopefully hear news either way in the next few days.

where are you waiting to hear? surprisingly ny sites have been faster to respond than in previous years.

I'm still waiting on:

MUSC
Atlanta VA (I think this will be a rejection based on a post yesterday)
Biloxi VA
New Orleans VA
Houston VA
Vanderbilt VA
Emory - Adult track
Tulane
Memphis VA
N FL/S GA VA

So far I've heard from 4 and I have 3 interviews, so I feel optimistic....the suspense is killing me though!!!

haha I JUST posted on my gchat status that the suspense is killing me!!!!!

3 interviews = awesome! Don't lose hope over Atlanta VA just yet. TD said he's not finalizing interviewing schedule until Fri so maybe you're in the 'maybe' pile and he's waiting to hear confirmation from otr interviewees? I also applied to a bunch of VAs and haven't heard back from some (VA Bronx, VA Hudson Valley, VA New Orleans, VA Hawaii). My January schedule is a complete mess. I want to hear back so I can organize. I guess this is why most of my classmates are only applying to NYC/Tri-state sites!!!

Good luck fellow VA-er!! New Orleans is one of my top choices so I really can't wait to hear back from them:xf:

Did anyone else get a Rejection from the VA Black Hills yet?

This morning I received notification that I am not invited for an interview, but they will still consider my materials in the match. I'm curious if this means they just rank all/most of their applicants, or just a select few...

Someone mentioned earlier in this thread that it's not unheard of for sites to rank applicants despite not having interviewed them. Albeit your chances of getting a spot there are likely small, but apparently it could theoretically be possible.

Just wanted to add Phoenix Children's Hospital to the list of rejections...just head from them 30 minutes ago via email. 🙁

Got an interview at U of Rochester! Better get some snow clothes!
are you interviewing @ the med ctr or counseling center? it is COLD there! snowy and in the 20's. eeeeks! I'm heading up there after new years.

Hi there,

Will your doctoral program allow you to complete an "APPIC-equivalent" internship? If so, that gives you many options outside of the officially accredited sites. I think many doctoral programs are flexible, though a few states are not when you try to get licensed. And regarding your non-traditional age, many sites/employers may want someone with more life experience who chose to enter the profession after having experienced other things, who lived a little outside of institutions and training programs, instead of just going into grad school shortly after undergrad because it seemed like the socially acceptable and safe thing to do. Please don't despair!

Keep the faith,
AD:luck:

Me, too!! I grew up in Cleveland so I remember weather like that, but I am currently living in the southwest, so I think I'll spend a large portion of the time shivering when I go! 😉

Interview offer from North Chicago VA (email). Interviews the first two weeks of January 🙂

Question..... so, I got an interview at a site (already on the list) and I applied for two separate tracks there. The email invite did not in any way indicate which track(s) I would be interviewing for. I e-mailed back since I needed to reschedule the interview day so I asked about that and also asked (kindly) which track(s) I would be interviewing for. I got a response saying that I had been moved to a date that works for me but again, absolutely no indication of which track(s) the interview is for. I have to e-mail them back, per their request, to confirm that the new date works. Do I ask again which track(s) I'm interviewing for? I think the emails are coming from an admin assistant so they might not know. I could either ask again, OR ask whom I should get in touch with to find out, OR just drop it and prepare for both. The two tracks or vaguely similar.

Thoughts?

I don't want to be a nag and keep asking, but I really would like to know which track(s) I'm interviewing for so I can fully prepare for the interview. One of my profs suggested that maybe it's just a general (non-track specific) interview and they will figure out fit and tracks post-interview.

Anyway...any thoughts/suggestions/ideas would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Has anyone heard from Florida Health Science Center yet?

OR Miami VA?

Just received an invite from Lancaster General Health in PA via mass email 😀

FYI, Palo Alto invites are going out this afternoon via email. Note, they have not gone out yet but WILL be going out soon :xf:

Hey everyone...been lurking for awhile, figured i'd finally post.

So far I've gotten invites from Institute for Child and Family Health, Florida International University, Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, and Community Services Institute...rejections from Suffolk and Beth Israel. waiting to hear back from 16 more!

You're referring to the Institute for Child and Family Health in Miami, FL right? When did you hear from them? What are their interview dates? I applied there but still haven't heard anything.

So far, I have an interview at the Louise R. Goldhagen Multidisciplinary Evaluation and Consulting Center in Tallahasee, FL. It was a personalized email that I received on December 2nd. Their interview dates are 1/6 and 1/7.

I have one rejection from the Mailman Center for Child Development in Miami, FL. 🙁 It was one of my top sites, so I was really bummed about it.

Still waiting to hear from 7 more sites. :xf:

Still waiting on Miami VA myself... as well as Jackson Memorial/Univ of Miami, if we're talking FL sites. Blah! I am so not good at waiting. Luckily(?) I have DKEFS scoring to keep me busy today...

I'm also waiting on a bunch of VAs in NYC area... Brooklyn, Manhattan, Hudson Valley, and New Jersey (though my hopes are slim for NJ given they called people quite a while ago...). I wish I could start planning my travel if I need to!!

oooh! inside scoop...scared for this one though, expecting rejection

I'm waiting for Jackson Memorial/Univ of Miami (peds rotations) as well. My friend who went through this process last year said she did not receive an interview invitation from Jackson until December 18th. This made me feel a lot better.

She also said that Miami sites are notoriously late. She heard from almost all the Miami sites she applied to close or after the December 15th deadline. We believe it's because they're running on "Cuban time." (I'm Cuban so I'm not being racist. We're just not punctual people.) 😀

The whole process seems inhumane to a certain degree. After going through 4-5 years of graduate training and accruing thousands of hours (doing unpaid work) we have to continue to prove ourselves for below minimum wage pay. Plus, psychologists are supposed to be understanding of diversity/individual differences, yet there are virtually no accredited part-time internships for people who have children or disabilities. I don't have kids, but really feel for people who either have not been able to match because they were geographically limited due to having kids or who have small children and thus cannot complete an accredited internship to begin with.

I personally don't think the post-doc year is a good idea anymore. It creates sig. barriers to employment since there are so few post-docs and graduates can't find jobs without a license. The system is really archaic. These days most people have done 3-5 years of supervised clinical training before even beginning internship. By the time we complete internship, my collegues have 5-6 years of extensive supervised clinical training (my program starts us in our first year). I will personally always seek out supervision and consultation, but do I need another year of supervised training and minimum wage pay? There is just way too much red tape and too many barriers that have been artificially created by psychologists. I hope that new graduates who have suffered through this process will help change it.

Thanks for the heads up about Palo Alto VA! I think my heart just jumped 🙂

I also have not heard from the VAs in Memphis, Miami, Houston, New Orleans, San Francisco, Nashville/Vanderbilt, Long Beach and Hawaii.

I was told San Francisco VA invites came out around the 5th last year, so we should be hearing soon.

Just got an invite for the University of South Carolina Counseling Center (by phone). So happy 🙂. Leaving for my first interview today.

Hope your interview went well!!!!

IsItOver - Are you interviewing in Bethesda or San Diego for the Navy?

Bethesda.

Just received a rejection from Springfield Hospital in Maryland.

Yo tambien. Pretty disappointed about that one. Also got a rejection yesterday from Geo Care/SFSH. No heartbreak there.

I hate feeling like trying to become a clinical psychologist may be compromising my sanity.

Lol right?!?!

Just wanted to add Phoenix Children's Hospital to the list of rejections...just head from them 30 minutes ago via email. 🙁

Sorry 🙁

Personally, my inclination would be to prepare to explain your interest in both, but that's just me 🙂

LMAO 🤣 Fingers crossed for both of us for Jackson (I applied to the adult)!

Would you mind sharing when you heard from Mailman? I applied there and still haven't heard anything. I know someone posted about receiving an acceptance, but nothing since.

I received a Florida Health Science Center interview offer on November 12.

Congrats! 🙂

You're a BMed person, yes? Did your invite seem track-specific or individualized?

Congrats! 🙂

I am BMed, but the email just mentioned the internship program in general, not my specific track of interest.

Interview offer from North Chicago VA (email). Interviews the first two weeks of January 🙂

Just a word of caution. Last year, the VA in North Chicago interviewed every single applicant! (that's more than 100) Heard it was so impersonal, hurried, the interviewers were fatigued, and interviewees were not always likely to speak with someone they share rotation interests with. Heard you may not even meet the Training Director. How cruel for applicants that must travel.

Yea it was ICFH in Miami, FL...they offered me January 21st or January 28th (i took the 28th). It was for the Sunset OP/School Based Clinic track...I heard from them on November 24th, it was a personalized email. Which track did you apply to? I know someone who got a rejection already from them, so maybe they havent decided on the other tracks yet?

Good luck on hearing from the rest of your sites!!!

I heard from them on December 1st, but I did not receive an email. I was personally contacted b/c I had done a practicum there and am currently doing some research there for another department. I think they did it as a courtesy to me since they weren't going to offer me an interview.

That's odd that you haven't heard from them. I have some friends that are interns there and I had heard from them that they were trying to alert everyone by December 1st.

The internship director, Dr. Neena Malik, is extremely nice so I wouldn't be afraid to email her and ask her about the status of your application.

Here is a rejection that confused me today:

"Thank you for your application to the predoctoral psychology internship program at Southern Arizona VA Health Care System.

We have received 82 completed applications for the 2011-12 internship year. Unfortunately, we are able to make only four offers. I regret to inform you that, having carefully considered the highly competitive pool of applications, we have concluded that we will not be able to place you on our APPIC ranked list, specifically for the general track--111211.

I wish to emphasize that you meet all basic requirements for application to our program and have obvious strengths. Should we not fill our positions from our ranked list, we would be pleased to have you join us as an intern. In order to assist you in your search for an internship position, however, I felt that it was important to provide you with this information as soon as possible."
------------------------------
This rejection confused me. They state they will not place me on their APPIC ranked list. But also say that if they do not fill their positions from their ranked list, they'd be pleased for me to join them. How is that possible if they don't rank me? (I must be missing something 😕

went out faster than i thought - just got an invite 😍

"You can schedule an on-site interview almost any day between Dec. 20 and Jan. 25, except weekends and holidays; over the holidays, that means no interviews on Dec. 22-27, and Dec. 30-31. We also cannot schedule interviews on Jan. 17."

"If you choose to interview by phone rather than arranging a visit, please schedule yourself ONLY on Dec. 28-29, or Jan 3-6."

I applied to the General Outpatient rotation. I'm a little relieved that you heard from a different rotation as they could possibly still be making decisions about the General Outpatient rotation. Thanks for sharing the dates with me and congratulations!

I just got an invitation for the Palo Alto VA via email, not personalized. They also appear to be offering several dates for interviews beginning December 20th. 🙂 sooooo excited. hope others have heard good news!

Just got notified about an interview for Saint Lukes Roosevelt-child track.

I'm still waiting on 7 sites: Cincinnati Children's (I know someone received an invitation from their Behavioral Medicine track but I haven't seen anything about rejections and I applied for both BM and Child Clinical), Children's National (in DC), University of Louisville, Allegheny, Wright State, Virginia Treatment Center for Children, and Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health.

Any word on those?
