2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
AcronymAllergy, you made mention a while back that APPIC does indeed have some formal criteria and review process for granting APPIC membership. Where did you read this? Is there a document or link you can provide that lists their criteria and process? It was my understanding that one was simply a "member" of APPIC (mainly by paying money, I think) and not really APPIC "accreditted. "

The letter is indeed mandatory. It is suppose to be sent within 2 weeks of match, I think. I recieved mine on the Frday following match day...

I'd totally forgotten about the 2-week guideline for receiving those letters. I've not received mine yet but assumed the mail might be slow on this end for some reason.

Now I'm a bit concerned.

Has anyone else who matched received the offer letter? Trying to figure out if I should contact the TD now, or wait a couple more days (until 3 weeks) to get in touch in case it is a slow-mail issue.

Sure thing; the information I saw was available in this word document: here

And JDS, my offer letter arrived on I believe either the Tuesday or Wednesday following the phase I match day. If you haven't received your letter yet, then I definitely wouldn't think it'd be out of line to contact your site's TD and inquire as to its status.

Is anyone else feeling a strong urge to yell "YOU ARE MY #1 CHOICE!!!" at [insert favorite Phase II site here]?? As far as rankings go, I have a very clear #1 and then a very vague idea of where everything else goes. #1 is such a great fit and I would be absolutely thrilled to go there...I just have no idea what I'm up against! This particular site didn't share how many apps they received or how many people they are interviewing. I *really* want that site but I also don't want to get too excited about any of the sites because not matching in Phase I was devastating. The possibility of not matching again is terrifying and while I know it only takes one, the numbers are not kind! Ugh....hang in there everyone. A week and a half left!

I'm not letting myself get attached. I am still really bummed about my favorite Phase I site. It was literally my dream internship and one I had my heart set on for over a year. I had a great interview there and then match day happened. 🙁

This go round, I feel like the sites I've interviewed at are equally good fits to each other (but in different ways), and I really just want an internship - trying hard not to get attached to any one place.

I can't believe that there are several sites that none of us have heard from yet. I know it's inconvenient for the sites to get so many apps in Phase II, but there needs to be a notification date, which I will definitely be suggesting on the Phase II Match Survey.

There should be a page on the APPIC site where the TDs can indicate if they have sent out all their interview invites. It would be easier for the TDs (who wouldn't have to send out rejection letters) and for all of us who are wanting to know if we still have a chance at an interview.

I received an official offer letter within a week of match day.

Good luck everyone. A few pages back someone asked the question whether they should contact the TD for phase I feedback. Last year I interviewed at one location (I was geographically limited), when I did not match I was devistated, but not suprised. I contacted the TD for feedback on my interview. This year I was more diverse geographically and I also felt confident to reapply to the site that rejected me last year. And guess what I matched with them. My point is it does not hurt to ask, I think they look at how you utilize the feedback to improve.

I do not know why they just don't make the "Internship Program Designation" page interactive (or create some sort of similar page within APPI).

Sites could actively acknowledge applicant, share status updates (application received, reviewed, rejected, interview request, etc.), ask for additional materials, set-up interview times, perhaps have a skype/conference option available directly on the site, etc. Time for APPI/APPIC to move into the 21st century!

Glad the games are starting soon... one more distraction 🙂

Rock Chalk! 👍

**Had to get a non-internship related post in there sometime. Trying to find a balance 🙂

That's a great story and it gives me a little hope. I contacted my top two sites after match day passed and asked for feedback/comments as well. Unfortunately, I got no response from either. Along with the crickets I'm hearing from Phase II sites, getting no response from my inquiries has made me feel completely discouraged and disillusioned with this whole process. 😕

I agree. Although I feel like the interviews I have had have gone well and there are a couple of sites I really like, its really hard to have faith in the process and to trust that things will work out. I feel like if I start to get excited and feel like there is hope, I will just be let down again. Not matching was absolutely devastating and I want to try to avoid feeling that way again (if at all possible). Guess we just have to hope for the best.

That is really unfortunate. It's too bad sites don't seem to have the same level of regard for their applicants. So much time, money, energy, etc., goes into the application process. I understand they are busy, but there needs to be something put in place to make this process better for the applicants.

In case anyone was wondering, my cohort-mate got an interview offer from Tarzana via phone tonight.

I'm so in agreement with every single thing you just said. I was actually SHOCKED when I didn't get my first choice in phase I, everything was lining up so perfectly and I had been set on that one for months before applying. They seemed to even be hinting to me that they were going to rank me highly. I don't even understand what happened... they were only ranking 20-some people for 12 spots. I still don't get it.

Anyway, for me, I have only received one interview. I am an extremely good match for them, but its hard not to get attached when you are putting all of your eggs in one basket... I feel like I don't have any other choice but to be hopeful for this site!

But I still haven't heard anything about two of my sites and it is just so draining to be wondering all the time if they are done contacting or if I should still be waiting by the phone constantly...

To Sanity 6 and others, on the question of getting feedback from sites where you didn't match: I think it can be very valuable (both for new learning and for reassurance about your strengths) to get feedback from TDs at sites where you did not match. Some are not willing to do that--but of those who are, asking right after Match day may have been problematic. Most site personnel are swamped with catching up on things postponed while doing the Match work--and it is not easy to talk with folks who you know are disappointed so it does require time and attention to review the application and do the feedback. It may be worth sending another request (if you still have the interest after the outcome of Phase II) along later in the process.

I feel the same way! Everyday I feel hopeful that I might receive some good news and at the end of each day I feel let down. I would be much better off if I knew one way or the other so I could just move forward.

i sent out 22 apps and received 2 rejections and that was it. no interviews at all. Anyone else in the same boat? you know how misery loves company!!

A few days remain before our rank lists are due. At the risk of being incredibly repetitive... I thought I would put a few feelers out there, you know, just in case :xf:

Looking for a bit of closure, if nothing else! 😉

Has anyone or does anyone know anyone who has heard anything from the following sites:

Humboldt Unified
Synchrony of Visalia
Pennsylvania Counseling Services
IMCES
Miami Dade
UC Riverside
Metro State
Bowling Green

Happy St. Pattys day and March Madness opening day to all🙂

I do increasingly wonder if the economy is playing a role in some sites apparently not interviewing/contacting candidates. For example, from what I have read, the budget for everything is horrible in Arizona. So I wonder if Humboldt Unified just decided not to fill the slot at this time for fiscal reasons.

It seems to me sites could technically not rank any candidates and just leave the positions open for the year. Am I right....can they technically do that?

I'm also interested in hearing if anyone has heard from Miami Dade or Rappahannock.

GO IRISH!!! :luck::luck::luck: (for both St. Patty's day and the tournament 😀)

Thanks docma, that makes sense. If I can muster the courage, I may just do that. 🙂

Also still waiting on:
Oklahoma Health Consortium
Metro State College of Denver
Miami-Dade Dept of Human Services
Southern Illinois University
Bowling Green State University
Rappahannock Area Community Services Board
Institute for Multicultural Counseling Education Services
Gateway Foundation
Pennsylvania Counseling Services
Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems

I think this is an excellent idea, and I hope those of you who are able to give feedback for Phase 2 will suggest it. I only wish I had thought of it on my own to give as feedback for Phase 1! The APPI and APPIC sites are so un-user-friendly, and there is SO MUCH more they could do with the page. I just wanted to say I love this idea!

I have been following this thread off and on, but have been thinking good thoughts for all of you in Phase 2. I thought I should let you know that a colleague of mine actually received an interview invitation (via phone) for Institute on Multicultural Counseling and Education Services (IMCES) in Los Angeles. They called her Monday afternoon. Sorry--but I know you guys would rather have the info than not.

Hang in there! I'm eager for next Friday for all of you to see who ends up where 👍.

Thank you. Yes, I believe I can speak for many of us when I say that although it is disappointing not to receive an interview offer, it provides a sense of closure to hear that the site has notified people. That way we can cross it off our lists and move forward. I urge anyone who finds themselves on SDN and knows anything about a site that is still unaccounted for (at least on this board) to speak up! It is better to know than to continue to wonder 🙂

Definitely. Thank you!

Hi all. I've been lurking since before Phase I and finally decided to join as my anxiety-level continues to grow. :scared:

The only new bit of information I have is that Bowling Green State University offered interviews last week (offers were made via phone). Hopefully that helps anyone who was waiting to hear from them.

I'm still holding out on a number of sites that have already been mentioned. I'm also curious to know if anyone's heard (either way) from UCSD/VA, VA Maryland or White River Junction VA.

Hang in there everyone! 😀

I had an interview with White River Junction VA this week...I got a call from their TD and an email last week...sorry.

I've already asked this, sorry, but has anyone heard from Northeast Oklahoma, Tulane, or Lexington FMC? Everything is starting to look like a long shot at this point...

I just double checked which site Northeast Oklahoma was, since I knew my friend had a phone interview last week at a forensic site in Oklahoma. Since I'm waiting to hear from Oklahoma Health Consortium and there's only one other site in Oklahoma, and it specifies forensic, I will assume my friend's interview was with Northeast :/

By any chance, did anyone submit the supplementary form for the UCSF site and hear back?

Cool, thanks. I was also hoping to hear from Tulane and Lexington FMC, but no such luck.

Has anyone/is anyone planning to contact the TD at sites you haven't heard from (or heard of anyone hearing from) or are you planning to accept that no contact up until now is a no?

I don't think I am going to contact sites, but am wondering if anyone has/what the sites response has been.

It seems like a lot of people are waiting on Tulane and Lexington...do you think there's a chance they're still going through apps because they received so many? :xf:

Hypothetically speaking... 😉

If you had 3 interviews this phase and then talked with the intern at one of those sites (your safety site that had the most positions) who sounded *miserable* (with good reason, and said the other interns were miserable too)... would you still rank them or would you rather not match and go through the process again?

You left out WHY they were miserable. long hours, supervision problems, location, staff personalities, training opps? I think knowing that is key.

I have talked to people who expressed being "miserable" at their sites, however, in one case it was simply because the intern didnt want to go there in the first place, and thus they were carrying around a grudge about being "short changed." (ie., they felt they should have matched to a high caliber site) Another was a total research-hound at a 100% clinical site with no academic affiliation. No doubt he wasnt happy...but that wasnt really the programs fault.

Good point! From what I was told, incredibly long hours (almost unheard of), supervision problems and staff personalities. All very important issues. I think I know the answer to this, but I just struggle with intentionally not ranking a site at this point and potentially not matching.

Haha...sounds like a site I interviewed with for Phase II in Ohio. 🙂 The site I am thinking of in Ohio seems to have plans to, at least, "lessen" the workload a bit 🙂

Ah, good to know about U of R, thanks. Since that makes it a likely rejection for me then, looks like another yellow highlight for my Excel site sheet. Yes, my anxiety has influenced the color coding of my internship Excel sheets.
Haha I def did this the first time around 🙂

There should be a page on the APPIC site where the TDs can indicate if they have sent out all their interview invites. It would be easier for the TDs (who wouldn't have to send out rejection letters) and for all of us who are wanting to know if we still have a chance at an interview.

These are both great ideas, and while I am sure from a programmer's perspective it is not super simple, many graduate programs have something like this in place (my little brother just applied to 3 MA programs that had a similar system), so it isn't exactly un-unprecedented and they would have a framework on which to base it.

I want to be happy during my internship year. That said, it's only a year, and I certainly wasn't happy having to take the last one off. Having EVERYTHING done, except internship, is very frustrating (can I put ABI [All But Internship] after my name?). So, I would rank them anyway. It would be the lesser of two evils for me. But, this is my second year, so I am doubly jaded.

Good luck, whatever you decide!

I have had 4 interviews so far, and got a call this morning from Central Texas to set up an interview for tomorrow! I guess some sites really ARE waiting until the last minute!

Mixed experiences so far. Two great, longer interviews, and two very brief ones that felt rushed. Coalinga State Hospital, which I thought would be my #1, didn't even give me a chance to ask questions! They definitely slipped in the rankings based on the interview. It is funny how some sites seem to understand that we are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing us, and others must just think so highly of themselves that they don't need to be bothered making a good impression. :wtf:

I think I know exactly the site you are talking about and I'm struggling with the same issue myself. To be fair, a friend of a friend completed an internship there a few years ago and had a somewhat more positive experience. Hard to say whether the site is simply exploiting interns' cheap labor and desperation to secure an internship or if intern unpreparedness and/or sensitive personality may be at work.

To provide some food for thought, here are the questions I'm currently pondering :

Will this internship adequately prepare me for the career that I want, or is there a better way to spend my time next year in the event I don't match?

How confident am I in my ability to work efficiently in order to avoid writing reports on the weekends?

How interested am I in the training experiences offered, knowing full well that particular rotations are not guaranteed?

How does my personality fit with a supervision style that is not, shall we say, warm & fuzzy?

This makes me glad I'm going to a VA med center where we are kicked out at 4:30-5pm and there is no commuting to different consortium sites or satellite clinics (although i think we have an option of one rotation at a VA clinic in a very rural part of the state). I know the shared agency internship consortiums can offer a wonderful variety of learning, but my personality is such that I am much more comfortable going to the same place, same building, and same office Monday-Friday.

For all those in Phase II who applied to the newly established VA internships that are not yet APA accredited and not APPIC members, is that really a limitation at all? I know that one can be employed and post-doc within the VA system with a not yet APA accredited VA internship (as long as they are seeking it), but does it still limit ones competitiveness for non-VA post-docs? Have you asked, or have the TDs given you guys the scoop on this?

Yea, yea, meanwhile Louisville gets beat by a college the size of an outhouse thats located in a part of the state where most people wont even go! I'm embarrassed! Guess Ill go drink my sorrows away now...

for the person who asked earlier, I heard that VA Maryland interviewed earlier this week...

I am definitely thinking about contacting a couple of sites tomorrow that it sounds like no one has heard from...but I am terrified that this would irritate a TD. I'm trying to weigh that against sitting and wondering...

I hate to take another one out of the running, but I too agree that I find it better to at least know something...FMC Lexington did some interviews last week. I have not heard anything about Tulane.

Good luck everyone.

I wasn't expecting to hear from them, my school's always had terrible luck there.

I have been wondering the same thing about UCSF -- I was hoping that they would let us know either way, considering the amount of effort required for that supplemental app!

I am having a similar dilemma to others in that I am trying to decide whether to rank my bottom choice at all or if I would rather try my luck again next year. Like others, I am done with everything for my program and another year would feel like treading water. However, I don't want to end up at a program where I would (a) be miserable and/or (b) feel like my future career/postdoc options were damaged by the caliber of the site. If I wait and reapply, I might have a shot again at sites that I am excited about.

I guess it's a question that doesn't really have an answer...it's just really stressing me out! I thought I was feeling nervous/worried/helpless during Phase I but this is SO much worse....

I thought I was feeling nervous/worried/helpless during Phase I but this is SO much worse....

The numbers really aren't in our favor 🙁

Even with a few interviews (that I think went really well) I feel like it is a long shot due purely to the imbalance. Ugh. 👎

Hi, I've been following the thread for awhile and wanted to thank everyone who has posted about interview offers/rejections for Phase II. Although it's disappointing to not be interviewed, it's nice to be able to cross them off the list of contenders!

I think I will have to re-apply next year and am trying to improve my application strategy. I followed the advice to not to submit supplementary materials to sites in Phase II, but maybe this was a mistake. Did others submit them?

I had originally mentioned UCSF and after we submitted our regular applications, they emailed all of us with a pretty comprehensive follow-up supplementary application form. I, personally, did not submit any other supplementary materials with other schools.

Additionally, I received an official rejection from University of Rochester PRIDE track this morning. Thanks to the forum, it was expected but it was still good to officially find out from the site as well. Well, not "good" but you know what I mean.
