lol I do want to be in academia part of my life and a practicing physician in a hospital as well 🙂. I will see the different avenues in the near future. Hopefully, my specialty doesn't change 🙁. When I want something and I am focus on that particular thing. I pretty much work extremely hard to get to my goal 🙂. But I am only pre-med so things could happen. I am slightly open-minded but idk since nothing so far piques my interest as much as Derm does. Now other specialities I am interested in are Surgery and Anesthesiology/Pain Management 🙂

For the top graduating medical students (M4s) their choice of medical school mattered. Match lists are a matter of fact, making an interpretation of them is part of your due diligence as a pre-med. And as a pre-med, you should already know where the good programs are, who's who in each specialty, and and have a rough idea what you'll need to do to get any specific fellowship.

Remember, N= 1 is for the lower half of your class.

That's true and that's why I am always in the speciality forum reading up on the speciality I am interested in as well as the academy of my Speciality interest website. I also look at FRIEDA online about specific programs and stuff but some people are not open to pre-meds about what to look for in a residency programs. They always say, you may change your mind or you have plenty of time, wait till 2nd year. But knowing the information can't hurt you at all. We all know USMLE Step 1, honors and research are important in every speciality 😀

I think most of us can agree that match lists are like hot undergrads... They're fun to look at, but it's stupid to let them influence your medical school choice.

Now per OP's request, can we stick to finding and posting match lists and not hurrdurr-ing this old argument ad nauseum?

No when I look back at my PS from second to eighth grade, I was always interested in Derm lol. Never thought about the Power Ranger Gig even though I wouldn't mind being the Pink Powere Ranger which is the White Ranger "wife" 👍😍

i'm pretty naive pertaining to some of the specialty fields which include dermatology. however, from what I've perceived and what I've learned, the main desire for me to possibly consider the dermatology field is through family history and relevant people. for me, whatever field I enter, i want to do primary research. combining the fact that many dermatologists weren't able to solve any life-changing problems for the person, i.e. chronic eczema in the wrong places... that no amount of tests and medicine somehow diagnosed, and that the possible medications/creams were really limited, so says the dermatologist, the great lifestyle is only an added bonus.
 
Careful Drizz, it seems derm is the Mayo of specialties and soon someone will talk about how you went off on a rant about it. How dare you?!

For what it's worth, I too think derm is mind-numbingly boring, but I think radiology may be even more boring and I know you love that...honestly, it's crazy how vast medicine really is and how different people's jobs can be.

I was shadowing in the ED lately and they have a bunch of radiologists on the premises 24/7. We wanted the radiologist to go over a scan from a trauma and we went into the rads room. Holy hell. It was like entering a different dimension. From the bright, happening, loud world of the ED to a quiet, dark room where everyone was speaking in hushed voices and just staring at computer screens. I'd be asleep within minutes. All I see is fuzzy gray stuff.

And as for choosing what you want to do when you're 6- it's funny actually. When I was little, I was OBSESSED with ER. I think they started airing it when I was like, 8 or something. Anyway I remember really wanting to be like Dr Carter and become an emergency doc. Since then I went through a zillion other interests, and I'm still not totally set on what I want to do, but this year I have found myself being really interested in EM again. Go figure.

And yet the reading room is where the majority of modern diagnosis happens... I can understand why people might find diagnostic rads boring, in their limited exposure to it. Even during the clinical years and even with a radiology clerkship it's hard to appreciate all the things done in rads although you'll certainly get a feel for how pervasive it is in medicine today. There's a pretty gigantic variety of things that are done in the specialty too, ranging from all patient care/contact to none. Personally, I'm interested in interventional stuff but you get exposed to a pretty big variety of things. That said, it's hard to go into rads w/o liking imaging.

I could specialty bash all day, but there's usually a lot of things I like in each specialty. I can see why derm would be interesting, I just think there's no way 15 people from Penn or whatever went into it b/c they were fascinated by skin.

And as for choosing what you want to do when you're 6- it's funny actually. When I was little, I was OBSESSED with ER. I think they started airing it when I was like, 8 or something. A lot of the research in "derm" is really in allergy/immunology or in rheumatology, just fyi.

Remember everyone, your medical school's value, and by extension your value as a human being is directly proportional to number of times "Harvard," "UCSF," and "Johns Hopkins" appear on this year's match list. So if you're looking and do not se those names, consdr transferring or reapplyng the next cycle.

We don't need to graduate 10 dermatologists, 5 radiation oncologists, 15 orthopedic surgeons or whatever other obscene numbers for every 2 or 3 family practice. This is coming from a guy who isn't interested in much of primary care.

In addition, most of us (including myself for many of the programs) have NO idea what programs are truly strong. Name does not equate program strength. Some people want small community programs. Some want major academic centers. Some will suffer 5 years of malignancy for a name to wow people. Oftentimes, the best programs aren't the sexy names to premeds or med students.

So, take it in. Enjoy. Discuss. Just remember to take it with a grain of salt as well. A match-list heavy in pediatrics, family practice, ob/gyn, and psych is not a failure, but merely people pursuing an area of medicine they found interesting and agreeable with their life plan.

just to clarify...by that do you mean most of the grant money goes to that and most number of publications is for those areas?

Derm is a very visual field in which you can see progression with your patients. I personally have a lot of skin problems especially eczema and will like to dwell more into atopic disease. I also would like to do research in this field. No Derm doesn't make a lot of money so for me it's not about the money 🙂. Also I get to see cool skin diseases that are affecting other countries and study them. I also into Global health and doing skin will allow me to travel and observe what is going on in different countries? Melanoma is also something I may want to get into. Lastly, Derm has a little bit of everything.

Also, my, "tell that story" line meant the following. I've heard people who like surgery have an experience that attracted them to it and they got hooked, or a fascination with the brain for someone in neuro, I was just interested to hear about someone's fascination with botox injections or something like that. I'd love to hear that story.

Both, most of the chronic things are allergic or autoimmune and the research is in other areas.

no kidding, FM was the #1 choice. wouldn't you agree though, that many, perhaps most, of the IM/Peds matches are at places where people are going to be looking to specialize? i'm not sure, but it looks like there are some pretty heavy-hitting university programs in there.

I mean, regardless, they're still training in a primary care residency. I didn't count OB-GYN as PC in my assessment btw...

right, what i was driving at more than anything was what crap the UsNews PC rankings are. many of those people probably have no intention of working as an internist in the community. it's certainly impressive to see a sixth of the class going into FM tho

...and no, Ob-Gyn isn't PC - although a lot of people think it is.

I know a guy in a similar situation. He won some impressive awards and was AOA, but he went into FM because he loved it. I'm sure it was frustrating for him at times when people sometimes assume he is doing it because he had to, not because he wanted to.

For the top graduating medical students (M4s) their choice of medical school mattered. Match lists are a matter of fact, making an interpretation of them is part of your due diligence as a pre-med. And as a pre-med, you should already know where the good programs are, who's who in each specialty, and and have a rough idea what you'll need to do to get any specific fellowship.

Remember, N= 1 is for the lower half of your class.

Considering how many/most pre-meds end up in a different specialty than they initially planned on, much of this research will be wasted. Carry on.
