2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone hear from them? I know they have a 12/30 notification date, but just wanted to see...

I'm waiting on them too. My last place...

So far rejections: 9
Interviews: 10

Waiting to hear if Columbia invites me to a second interview and to hear from Manhattan psychiatric...

Has anyone heard from MercyFirst? I am going to assume I've been rejected... but it would be nice if they confirmed!

I emailed the TD Friday and today got a personal reply telling that/why I was not being interviewed. It was quite pleasant actually and since I'm happy w/ my # of interviews it didn't even sting.

Thanks for this info! Sorry about the rejection but it sounds like you are in good shape with your interview offers! 🙂

I am going to email him now. Thanks again!

Finally heard back from all my sites today. (Nothing new to add that hasn't been added already)

I have 11 interviews all over the country at a variety of different sites, so I'm excited about that. Now on to figure out how I'm going to live out of my suitcase for 2 weeks!

Has anyone heard a rejection from Geisenger Medical Center or JLG RICA? I know they sent out invites so i'm awaiting a rejection, however find it so rude for sites to not inform us! Just wanted to see if anyone has....I will probably end up emailing the training director just to be safe since a friend of mine had not heard from a site and she ended up getting an interview (w/the email lost in cyber space).

I haven't heard of Gildner rejections yet; however, the way they state things in the directory makes it sound like they don't bother. I agree that it is rude; nonetheless, it seems to be standard practice for a lot of places in this area when it comes to any type of job-related application.

This phrase from the APPIC match policy:

"For Phase I of the Match, internship programs that conduct on-site or telephone interviews must make a reasonable effort to notify every applicant who submits a complete set of application materials as to his/her interview status."

makes it seem like all sites are required to let you know, one way or another, what your interview status is. Thus, if they list a specific deadline in their APPIC profile, I'd imagine they MUST inform all applicants of their status (offer or rejection) by that date. If not date is listed, I'd imagine it defaults to 12/15, although I could be wrong.

I emailed them but haven't heard anything.

🙁 I emailed the training director this morning and got a lovely rejection email a short while later. They received 175 applications. In previous years it has been around 100. Over the weekend I had researched housing costs around there and there's no way I can afford to live there so that makes me feel a little bit better about the rejection.

Good luck with the interviews everyone!

Hi, has anyone heard back from Central Texas Internship in Clinical and Forensic Psychology?

One site decided that I needed two rejections, a few hours apart this morning

I also got rejected from the Capital District Health Authority via email, finally. It sucks 'cause I liked the site, but at least now I know. So the grand total...

7 interviews, 15 rejections

Or if we're counting different streams as separate interviews then I guess I have 9. Woo hoo!

i still havent heard from sharp either but one of my class mates got an interview on friday...im still holding on to some hope though lol

btw question for second timers: did anyone re apply to sites where they interviewed last year (with more hours and obviously better materials), only to get straight rejected this time? that happened to 2 of my sites and im starting to wonder if i did really bad on my interviews...although one place i reapplied to where i interviewed gave me an interview again.
I am doing this for the second time, and I applied to places that had given me an interview last year as well as sites that had flat-out rejected me. Overall, it's been kind of a mixed bag - some/most have not granted me an interview, but a few did, and so I think that it has definitely been worth it, considering right now I only have six interviews. I am really happy that the site I interviewed at last year is giving me a second look, because I feel like I kind of flubbed that interview (it was tough, but fair) but overall I feel like that site would have been a great fit for me. They kind of picked apart one of my assessment reports (and rightly so), thus, this year I submitted a report I was much more confident about. I think that the site that did not give me an interview last year but did this year likely spotted that my practicum this year is preparing me well for work within an inpatient medical setting similar to their own. Anyway, I wouldn't try to over-analyze your performance last year... just prepare as well as you can knowing what you know now about the site. Best of luck on your interviews!

Anyone hear from Temple yet, one way or the other? That's the last one I'm waiting on and I believe their notification deadline is today.

And, I can't recall if this has already been posted but I know that Erie Psychological Consortium sent out mass invites a couple days ago.

I got a personalized email from Temple at noon for the CORE track- they are interviewing 28 people total for all three tracks. Interview dates on the 9th and 13th.

Niknok- I said "it might bring up some questions", not "it might count against you!" (there's some paranoia guided re-stating for you!) Remember- you are at the interview because they WANT YOU for their position. They are not doing you a favor. If there were insurmountable gaps between your training and their needs, you probably wouldn't have been invited to interview. My best advice is to focus on the similarities and how they make you a good fit.
If you've done community psych with adults and children, highlight your experience with the community psychology, and how your experiences with both children and adults has strengthened your appreciation for the general applicability of this approach. If asked directly about the different types programs you are interviewing at (which I'm almost certain you won't be!), you could talk about how your strong generalist training has prepared you well to be a successful professional psychologist in a variety of settings. You could also focus on how your commitment to and strengths with a particular clinical approach or framework (i.e. CBT) guides your case conceptualization in wide variety of clinical settings with many different client types and presenting clinical issues.

Seriously though- try not to be paranoid about this issue. They WANT YOU to be their intern and they have determined that your background and training are appropriate for their site.
Thanks for rephrasing my paranoia. A good old dose of reality check is needed from time to time in this crazy process.
I wish everyone a good interview and a good match 😍

btw, off topic (tangential if you may) what kind of hotels/motels are you booking for (2star-3 star)? Do you have a particular site that you go to book your hotels/motels?
Also, I'm from California and I have never driven in snowy area, thoughts about whether I should just take a cab or rent a car?

Hotels: cheap, clean mostly 3 star
Car vs. cab- if you've never driven on snow/ice then I would definitely recommend taking a cab- better to get there safely.

Good luck with your interviews!

Well, finally received my rejection from University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, child track. The administrative assistant claimed to have sent it out Friday and suggested I check my spam account-like I haven't been doing that on a regular basis! Oh well, that was the last one🙂

Yeah, I posted about this a few pages back. It's actually a Match policy that sites have to notify applicants about their interview status by their chosen interview notification deadline. Remember which and how many sites didn't notify you by their deadline because you get asked if any sites violated Match policies (and for comments) in the APPIC survey after the Match. Sites that don't notify you by their deadline are violating Match policy and should be held accountable for it. Of my 20 sites, 3 didn't notify by their deadlines (one still hasn't!). I think this is probably one of the more difficult parts of the policy to enforce because, if a site rejects you and you claim they did it late (although you may have proof of this, like emails) it may seem like sour grapes to the site or to APPIC (or you might want to apply to that site next year, so you don't bring it up at all), while if a site interviews you, you may be unwilling to bring up their failure to follow policy because you'd like to match there and don't want the issue to affect your chances.

However, there's no default notification date. The 12/15 one is a recommendation but sites are free to choose whatever date they want. If they say one, though, they have to stick to it to abide by Match policy.

Driving in a snowy place isn't much different than driving in a non-snowy place (speaking from personal experience). If there's a giant snowstorm, it's a bit different because you have to drive really slowly and carefully but I'd hope the site would reschedule interviews. Otherwise, the road crews keep roads pretty clean and safe throughout the winter. You can watch out for black ice if you drive at a reasonable speed and black ice isn't that common most of the time (takes a particular set of conditions). Depending on how far you'd have to go, like if the site is rural, a cab could be very expensive (more than a car rental, though less than a car crash). If you drive carefully, which you probably would because of your heightened anxiety 😛 , you're not likely to get into an accident. Good luck! :luck:

Has anyone heard from Will County Health Department in Illinois or KidsPeace in PA??

Then again, as a teenager I had many a good chuckle watching people who had never driven in snow conditions try to drive on Colorado roads in the winter. Just give yourself plenty of time to get to where you need to go and don't rush. Also, there are some good tips on this website, particularly if you have to drive out to a more rural area: http://www.weather.com/activities/driving/drivingsafety/drivingsafetytips/snow.html

Hi! Has anyone been given a list of interview dates for Friends Hospital??

I heard back right away. That said, I requested a phone interview because I heard from 4 past interns and 1 faculty member that its an awful site. Apparently, last year, every intern had negative things to say about every rotation! (working 70+ hour weeks, no respect, etc) So, maybe i heard back because I had a special request? Just couldnt justify a flight and hotel for that site ....

Thanks for your reply. I am just frustrated that the TD will not respond.

That's really good information to know. NOT that I would necessarily want sites to get in trouble but this process is nerve-wracking enough without adding additional stress because a site hasn't notified you yet. They should be held responsible for a deadline they chose.

I'm currently on internship, but I didn't match until my second attempt. In my second go-round, I applied to three places I'd interviewed at the year before (and chose not to apply to a few places I'd interviewed at and didn't like) and three places I'd applied to and didn't get an interview the first time. I received interviews from two places I'd interviewed at previously and one rejection. I also received one interview from a place that hadn't offered me an interview the year before, though two of the sites didn't offer me an interview the second time around, either. I ended up matching at one of my first choices from my first year, though, and they have indicated how happy they were that I applied a second time and how much they felt I improved over the year.

If your interview is somewhere central, like downtown, I highly recommend Priceline's name your own price (biddingtraveller.com, I believe, is a great intro to how the site works). You can save a ton of money and I've always gotten a decent hotel. However, if the interview is in a small town or somewhere out of the way, I would recommend searching for a specific nearby hotel on expedia.com.

anybody get a rejection from sharp yet?

also, i know people have asked for tips on how to drive in the snow/cold weather, but im wondering if anybody has tips on what to do when there is thick fog?? i have an interview in bakersfield (kern county mental health) and there is supposed to be very thick fog there in the winter months. im kind of worried about the drive there...

hey psydperson, when did you hear from kern county? i havent heard a word from them and was wondering if i may have missed a notification...

If you drive carefully, which you probably would because of your heightened anxiety 😛 , you're not likely to get into an accident. Good luck! :luck:

I lol! That's true i'll probably be melting the snow around me because I am so flustered and nervous

Hehe, one of my interviews is in Denver. I think most of the places I'm interviewing are pretty urban (Denver and Quincy, MA) although I think Provo, Utah is more rural. Maybe I'll decide how comfortable I am driving when I get there. I gave myself an extra day just to settle in.

Thanks for the road tips guys 🙂

Has anybody emailed or tried to contact the UCSF Infant-Parent Program TD? The APPIC directory said their notification date was 12/18. Does this mean it's a rejection if we haven't heard? 🙁

I havent heard from them either. I emailed the TD today but havent received a reply. Will let you know if i hear anything...hopefully not a rejection!

Anyone interviewing at Cornerstone Behavioral Health or Wyoming State Hospital in Evanston? The last week of Jan. 24-26.

anyone hear from western carolina? ...or not?

Thanks! I just want this waiting to be over!

A mixed bag which has interviews, rejections, and an answer to a few questions:

This is a summary from others:
Pennsylvania Counseling Services sent mass rejections on Friday.

Mid Atlantic Internship Consortium sent out personalized invites today.

I have yet to hear anything from Temple Child Anxiety (which probably is a rejection) or Kidspeace.

Yep- I got a personalized email invite on 12/13 for an interview on 12/20. I'll pretty sure they did rolling invites though?!

so they wait until people respond until asking for more people to interview? I left the director a message and never heard back. I tried going through the switchboard and it was like slapstick comedy, ohmygoodness!!

I grew up in that area, so was really hoping to at least interview. Let's see what happens...Although I should assume a rejection is coming...I prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Lol. Good luck!

yeah, I have an interview with them on Jan 13th. I think they sent me an email on the weekend of the Dec 10th at some point.

was the email from Dr. A'iello? I'm trying to do a search in case I missed it....thanks!

I emailed them but haven't heard anything.
Someone from my program called Geisinger today - they said they have not sent out rejections yet because they are essentially waitlisting people until they hear back from their first choice interviewees.Hard to believe that people that were invited over a month ago have not confirmed interviews???

Okay, this may be the third time I am asking in the past week, buuut has anyone been offered an interview and WVU - Morgantown. I would imagine interviews have been sent out, but no evidence of such on here and I know plenty of rejections have been sent out. And I've received no email response from the training director.. Hmmmmm😕

I have yet to hear anything from Temple Child Anxiety (which probably is a rejection) or Kidspeace.[/QUOTE]

has anyone received an interview from temple child anxiety?

Can anyone who is interviewing for the child track at South Shore Mental Health switch interview days with me? I am currently scheduled for the 13th and need to switch with someone for the 17th. Please send me a message if this is possible.

Thanks!

I am wondering what sites may think if you only have one interview. I am only waiting to hear back from two placements, but I'm going to assume that I will end up with one interview after this entire process. How should I approach such a question in that instance? I obviously don't want to lie, but I also hope I don't give off an impression that I am a poor candidate and that no one else wanted me. I don't believe I am a poor candidate - I actually have been able to hold on to some of my confidence in my skills and performance clinically throughout this process - I firmly believe that the probationary status of my school detrimentally affected my chances of matching in the APPIC process. But I also don't want to place blame either...

Any suggestions?

Just thought I would throw this out there again. Unfortunately my school is just not a reliable source for me to discuss internship interviews. Anybody have any ideas about how to approach a question about interviewing at other sites when you only have one interview?

FINALLY got notified that I have been invited for an interview. YAY! They didn't give any dates, but said that we'd be notified by two interviewers for two interviews. Unfortunately there are still two more sites that I am waiting on that have late notification dates. But at least I got this one of that list!

Anyone interviewing at Cornerstone Behavioral Health or Wyoming State Hospital in Evanston? The last week of Jan. 24-26.

I actually heard from Cornerstone yesterday via phone for an interview. I'll be there the first week of January though.

Is any one still waiting to hear from jSouthern Louisiana Internship Consortium?
