2013-2014 APPIC (internship) Phase II

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've accomplished quite a small amount throughout this whole process 🙂

Haha me too. I am on autopilot right now. My lectures are terrible. I feel bad for my students but don't have the energy to come up with fun examples and discussion topics.

I have my first Phase 2 interview in half an hour...trying to remain calm and collected but not going to lie, feeling very nervous. I may or may not be playing "Let it go" from Frozen on repeat to help me calm my nerves and get in the right framework of just letting it go and being myself.

I hate this process so much.

I also agree that rejections would be a nice addition to Phase 2!

Good luck!

just got a rejection notice from Southern Utah University. actually, a quite helpful rejection, because Dr. Ellsworth listed the 3 most common reasons why students are not selected for interviews.

Deep breaths! In and out. They're just as scared as you are... maybe. That might only work with snakes and other assorted wildlife but anyway, you'll do great! 🙂

What are they?

I guess I am going to ask what others are thinking lol...what are they?

I really want an interview with my top 4 so I emailed asking about the status of my application, what I like about their program and why I would be a great fit. It's time to get a little aggressive and go after what we want.

Still not a peep (for anyone on the forum it seems!) from half of my sites...including my 4 top choices for Phase 2! My outstanding list is:

Children's Hospital of MN
Nationwide Children's Hospital
Tulane School of Medicine
Mailman Center/University of Miami
Children's Institute, Inc.
UCLA Health & Behavior Track
University of Vermont

Anyone else kind of nervous that the people they invited to interview might just not be on SDN?? Seems like at least some folks should have heard by now if this process is going to be over by the 17th... Maybe I'm just being paranoid.

I don't think it's time to worry yet. I am still waiting to hear from a site in your list. I think it just takes a while for sites to go through nearly 200 applications (for APA accredited positions at least). I say by the end of the day next Monday is probably the time to assume you won't hear from a site, but even then there is still a chance.

Im waiting for every one of those sites too. eck! hope we hear something soon.

I listened to that song the whole week before match day...and was listening to it at the moment I got the "you didn't match" email so I had to take a break from it. But time heals, and I love the song again 🙂

My first interview I was so nervous! You'll do great!

Glad to hear interviews are going well! I have my first interview Friday and I'm kinda freaking out about it after the phase 1 debacle. I didn't interview in phase 1 so any advice from those of you that have interviewed is much appreciated!

man oh man. still waiting for eight sites that haven't been mentioned yet as interviewing. i am in the magical thinking phase where i am convinced that trains arriving as i walk up are a sure sign of an impending interview. 🙂

i found it helpful to practice mock interviews over the phone and on facetime with a few close friends.

This has really been a slow day. It's like all the remaining sites have decided not to contact us today as torture. Ugh!!🙁
Yes it has. I know it is a stressful process for all parties (sites and applicants). I just feel that if we have to write cover letters for all of them, the least they can so is send mass rejections as a courtesy.

For me at least, I could at least be scratching names off my list

I got a massage the night before in the hopes that it would help me sleep. But I also wrote out questions I thought they might ask, wrote my responses and reviewed beforehand so it was fresh in my mind. That way I wasn't relying on my ability to come up with impromptu responses that weren't as thoughtful as I'd like them to be.

That's great advice! Thanks!!

Sorry all, this is what I heard as to why Southern Utah University does not interview interested applicants:

1) interests and goals that are not a clear fit with our setting, training philosophy, and the experiences we provide

2) less therapy experience compared to other applicants

3) less university counseling center experience compared to other applicants

Very brave of you ! Maybe I should do that also . Did anyone respond to your emails ?

Just wanted to wish everyone in Phase 2 good luck!!! Sorry, I mean everyone except ShakeyD, Vagery, and NFLfan2014 (since they don't want acknowledge comments from people who matched in Phase 1).

I asked the director of training at my school if it was okay to contact sites to get an idea of there they are in the process, or more specifically, where I am in the process. He said it's okay but also reminded me that it's only been 4 business days. I was on board with that for about 3 seconds before I thought, "yeah but they should be moving faster than this!"

I think it's funny someone signed up just to be able to make that comment. 🙂
That's a great observation. I mean, I understand wanting to be encouraging but I don't think I'd be trolling this thread if I had matched. Just sayin'

Yep, I did. Sorry to bring real life into this thread but I know one of the three posters I referenced and they have been very nasty when I have tried to be supportive. I guess it is just frustrating to try to be supportive, then find out that a friend is complaining about how unsupportive people are on the internet. Anyways, that is all for me on this thread. Shouldn't have brought my drama here but honestly I really do wish everyone luck, regardless of whether they want it or not 🙂

Not yet. It was my last ditch effort. I had a friend who received rejections and he turned them into invites by emailing the director of training. I figured I have nothing to lose.

Like they rejected their rejection?! That's ballsy but I like it.

Wow, fifty1fifty. You have shown true class and the right kind of attitude in someone wanting to be in the mental health profession in order to help others. The amazing way in which you have handled the reactions of those who have been upset due to not matching in Phase I is truly inspiring. I hope to someday treat a client who has undergone a major disappointment with as much understanding as you have shown. Thank you for making me feel that internship sights were looking for those who needed the most improvement in Phase I.
Stay classy fifty1fifty.

I don't know fifty1fifty outside if here, but I have a hunch that "support" he/she offered came with a lot of humblebrags and self referential pats on the back.

Sorry to interject into this thread, but I am too curious. Can I ask what your friend said? I mean, that is pretty darn awesome.

Yes, please tell us more. This is fascinating. Your friend deserves a folk song.
He told me that he emailed them and stated that he was surprised that he received a rejection because he thought he was a great fit and wrote out all the reasons why he thought he was a great fit. He also spoke about his experience. He turned around several rejections. I was astonished. I had another friend who did the same thing. He is the original emailer. Lol

They probably feel embarassed about the situation, I know I feel that way. each person has their own way of dealing with it. what I find irritating is that you are turning this into a problem that really doesn't involve you. let him/her cope in their own way. this mean they may or may not want to discuss it with someone who so called "succeeded" where we did not.

Well said.

It is ballsy and it worked for him. I figured, let me try it before they reject me. Just a little convincing email as to why they should call, lol
The next question is, did he match at any of those sites?
