2013-2014 Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
HAHAH, Charizard gets too much fan and game designer favoritism. The only starter with 2 mega forms? Whateverrrrrrr

I'm from California, so I applied to all the CA schools (except for Loma Linda, because my Buddhist parents would have none of that), also complete around Aug 3, no word from them. I've noticed on the thread that some people have actually been getting pre-secondary rejections, so I'm hoping that this is more of a "hold" and not a silent rejection, but oh well, more waiting either way~

@_@ And then the conversation escalates and we get into an intense poke-rap battle while interviewees outside stare inside looking like 😱😱😕??? :wacky:!!
YES!!!!!!! but then u would let him/her win just in the hopes of improving ur chances in acceptance!!!!🙂

Thanks! 😀. For sure, my heart still skips a beat when I get new emails. Hoping you hear good news in the not to distant future :turtle::turtle::turtle::turtle:

Hahaha, I hope I don't get in trouble with the original artist, since I found this on some random page ages ago. Best pokemon in the history of ever, and Arcanine totally deserves a mega evolution form.

Anyway, I was actually Neurobio major in undergrad, but did research in a BME lab (because math is teh suck, and I just like sitting in on their awesome lectures) -dishonor-

I've met people who've done research in totally random things (science and non-science related). A few did some stuff that are more along the lines of working with plants, animals, etc., but people don't seem to particularly "care" what it was as long as you demonstrate that you learned a lot from your experience and can speak/explain/have a conversation about what you did (even if it was, as some people say "not as involved" or "medically related"). The stuff I've done isn't even close to being published but my interviewers still enjoyed talking about my plant bio lab experience as much as my BME one. 😛
I, for one, was very displeased that Arcanine isn't even a catchable pokemon in the new games. 🙁

I'm gonna be that guy. A handful of interviews. Not a single acceptance. Allah help me.

It's been 1+ month since ANY kind of news (good news, bad news).....Still waiting on 20 schools.....

Anybody else having dreams about this ****? First thing I do whenever I check my phone or computer is to check my email. The other day, I got a call from an "unknown number" and my heart skipped a beat, thinking it was a school calling to accept me. You can imagine my dismay when instead it was my doctor, calling to inform me my strep culture was positive. Hell, I even answer the home phone now in case they decided to forego common sense and not call my cell phone! And it's only been a little over a week since my first interview! Obviously I need to relax and distract myself with other things, but I'm sure you all know just as well as I do that that's easier said than done. I keep imagining how it will be to get accepted to a school I want to attend, to know that the waiting is over, that I can finally relax and feel accomplished knowing that I will be a medical student finally. I keep hoping for those fantasies to one day (hopefully someday in the very near future) become a reality.

Also, this website hurts me as much as it helps me lol. I have gained confidence from this forum, and have also felt like my chances are nil based on the stats of other members. You know you spend way too much time on this site when you type "F" and SDN comes up instead of Facebook, lol.

Anyway, good luck everyone. I'd like to say "Sayonara" but we all know I'll probably be back in 5 minutes. 😛

Joking: Check out streampaw's threads. Glorious.

Not joking: Go indulge in a hobby you haven't had the chance to pursue for a while. Running, pokemon cards (is that what the kids still do these days?), childhood cartoon watching, what have you.

I started rewatching Buffy on Netflix, which has been a distraction. Reading also helps. But it's so hard! I feel like it was much easier to wait before I received an II. Oh well. It's out of my control...I just wish I wasn't so impatient!

Impatience at this point seems natural. Maybe something with more physical involvement would help with the antsy-pants. Or you could start watching Doctor Who. Love me some Buffy, but, I mean, he's the Doctor.

Hahaha, my mom LOVES that show. I find the vast number of seasons rather daunting though. And yeah, I should start working out again or something.

Start with the reboot, it's a little more tractable. I personally prefer the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith, swoon!), but your mileage may vary.

If it's nice enough around where you live, go for a walk. Bring tunes. It will seriously cut the jitters.

Yes.. I had a dream that I got rejected from a school I didn't even apply to.
Also I am glad I didn't discover SDN until basically after I started applying.. otherwise I feel like I would have second guessed myself at every turn.

That only helps for today though. I feel like I go through this cycle every day where I start off normal, then freak out, then calm down by the end of the day and become okay with reapplying. Obviously not the worst thing in the world, but I would like to know I'm out of the running first before I begin preparing for that.

Yes, thankfully I didn't find SDN until after I'd received my first II.

Okay then, let me assure you that reapplying is not the worst thing in the world. I survived it. Temple kept me on the hook until the very last minute; my entire summer was agonizing over emails and phone calls all for a complete disappointment. Then this cycle they snapped me up as soon as they could. Hope that somehow settles at least one nerve.

It does help a bit! I plan on reapplying more broadly and as a more competitive applicant if I need to, which I may. I also plan on being complete in June! Temple is an amazing school and I hope I'm at least waitlisted to it! I don't expect to hear from them for about a month, though. Hopefully I'll know my status before my OSU interview!

This. However, I sometimes think about what it would have been like for me to have known about SDN way back when I was a Freshman, instead of after I already just applied a few months ago. So much great advice on here of which I was really not aware. Wish I knew so much back then. Oh well. Staying positive in this painful cycle; wishing everyone good luck.

Yeah, there's a lot I wish I knew during undergrad. I think going to a big school that has little to no personal advising hurts a lot. My girlfriend went to a smaller school where pre-med (and all other) students were given lots of advice and feedback. She wasn't pre-med... but still. Her school prepared her to go to Harvard for grad school, whereas I am still struggling to get accepted to med school after three years of research work post-graduation. I felt like I had to figure things out on my own... and when I did, it was too late 😉

Not to displace the blame from myself, of course, since I certainly could have worked harder and done better on my own accord.

Regardless... I just want this application season to be over! I'm starting to get excited for my backup plans... 😛 If I do get into a decent school this year, though, then all the better. 👍

I forgot to unsubscribe to. After having a particularly crappy past week, the only thing keeping me going is the possibility of eventually
kc0X8t

Complete silence for me lately. I can't tolerate it. I feel like the season is over for me, but everything I read on here indicates that it's not.

I'm also fairly certain that Drexel, PSU and NYMC lost my application somewhere.

I have always wondered how it's possible for someone to have that high of a GPA from a good school and not break at least 30 on the MCAT. Is it the time pressure? The level of critical thinking? The misleading answer choices? Because it sure can't be the raw material. Was the GPA a result of just consuming material and regurgitating it back on exams? But who am I to question that, I have neither a high GPA or an MCAT. Just honestly wondering without judging.

In either case, if your lowest sub score is above an 8, I would bet on you getting in somewhere this cycle, granted you don't have red flags on the rest of your app. Don't worry too much, you are sitting at a much more comfortable place than most people. Also, you can always retake the MCAT, its exponentially more difficult to raise a beat GPA.

The MCAT forces you to take in information and think quickly under pressure. Something that isn't really tested in college. In college classes you know exactly what topic will be on each test. Hell, I was pretty good at knowing what questions were going to be on my tests before I took them. The MCAT throws 7 different topics at you in an hour and you have to adjust on each section. I think this throws a lot of people. Not to mention most people have never taken a test this comprehensive before besides the ACT or SAT and those are a joke compared to the MCAT. You also better get good at tests like this because once you are in med school you need to take 3 more board tests that are even more monstrous; however, more relevant.

I agree with the MCAT forcing people to decipher and analyze a lot of information under a lot of pressure. And I kinda think that's what is expected of a doctor trying to save a life under an emergency situation. So in some ways it can be more relevant than a GPA alone. And to be honest, I think its a very well designed test. The solutions to the problems that are confusing as hell are so elegant and simple. Still though its only one of the several metrics they look at.

I submitted secondaries mid-september and so far only have one ii. Was I too late? Are interviews still being given out.

I submitted my secondaries a bit later than you did (mid October) and I am currently sitting on 2 II. I think for the most part we are sitting in a better position than a lot of people. Just hang tight and hope for more invites. Good luck!

Just curious. Anybody heard of people with super low MCAT scores getting into MD schools?

Not sure what exactly you mean by "super low". Regardless, I think of the admissions process as a point system. You get points for submitting early. You get points for a good GPA. You get points for a good MCAT. You get points for alumni in your family. You get points for falling into certain categories, having a good story, etc.

If you're an average upper-middle class white guy who is straight out of college with no real life experiences and a "super low MCAT" who sent in secondaries during November... it's really quite unlikely.

If you're a disadvantaged URM with a meaningful story, etc. it's much more likely within reason (23-26 MCAT).

Just my opinion. There will always be outliers; being a good fit for a school means a lot.

In short: yes. I have seen people with MCAT scores under 24 get into MD schools. However, they have to earn a lot of my make-believe "points" somewhere else to make up for that. 😉

LizzyM score 74. excellent extracurriculars + research/pubs. Interviews: 0.

100% annoyed. Trying my best to hang in there.

Just get pre-interview rejected from my top choice and state school University of Washington why do this to me 🙁
3.7 gpa, 32: 12P, 11 B, 9 V MCAT, Complete late September/early October
Only interview is from a new low ranked D.O. program. Still have yet to hear back from all the others; I'm so depressed right now 🙁

Really sorry to hear that. Though I don't know your situation, I can say that you never know what school is really a great fit for you until you see a lot of them. Schools have had years of experience screening and vetting candidates to get the ones who fit the profile they want, and I'm sure there's one out there for you.

I think you have very competitive stats, will get more interviews, and will find a place that you'll love. If worse come to worse (and you're really stuck on going to U Wash), see if you can get some feedback from the admissions office and reapply next year. I know they're rather region and mission oriented (it looks like you have at least the region down), so maybe get a critical look at your experiences from a current student and see what you could do in the interim year. Time off is not a bad thing. In fact, I think it's something (almost) everyone should do. I hope the rest of your season goes well and that you end up doing something (and going somewhere) you love!

P.S. -- I am neither a current medical student nor a member of an admissions committee, so my advice is only my opinion based on multiple years being a part of a school's professor search committee process.

Hey that's great congrats! I am just feeling really insecure about my MCAT 🙁 I do have a good gpa 3.9+. I am not quite sure if a 29 will get me any interviews esp since I applied late wahhh I wanna cry :'( lol
We have the exact same stats and I also applied late, but I have gotten 1 II so far. (only applied to a few schools). Hang in there!

I really need to be reassured that I have a chance (by getting at least 1 II!). I have been neurotically checking my emails everyday. I was excited to get this email from Duke, only to realize that it was some institute in Singapore lol sighsssss.
lol I got that email too.

I have been fortunate enough to get one interview but all my hopes are riding on this one interview! So I'm really nervous and stressed gah! I have friends who have gotten acceptances with the same MCAT score as me so it's really disheartening and I don't know if I will get other interviews this late in the game...Any folks out there that got an acceptance from just one interview? And if i'm interviewing in december with average stats, will adcom still consider me competitive? Sorry I'm slightly down and scared that this may be my only interview 🙁

Do other people also find it hard to imagine getting an acceptance after an interview or is that just me haha. Anyways thanks for hearing me out

At least you have one interview invite so congrats on that. All I've received is one rejection and still waiting on 5 schools to see if I get an II. Completed all my secondaries within the last two weeks so there's still hope. Hasn't been too long. Might sound crazy but Id rather get all rejections in one day and figure out my next move. This waiting is craaazy!! :O

An interview is certainly not a guarantee for admission. I commonly see 30-50% quoted as "acceptance rates". However, there is nothing wrong with a December interview... nor is it really that late. Of course this depends on many things (i.e., when you submitted, your stats, the schools, etc.). Your stats don't matter all that much one you get an interview -- at that point, you just need to own the interview. There's really nothing else you can do, right? They wouldn't have invited you if they didn't think you could be a good fit for the school.

I think it is far more likely that you will get interviews at more schools... so it's premature to freak out about the one you currently have an interview at. Don't waste a single minute thinking about what your friends have accomplished. I have friends at HMS, Michigan, JHU, etc... there will always be people who are apparently more successful. Just speaking from my experiences. 🙂

Good luck!

Oh congrats! Same applied to 10. Waiting to hear from the other 8. I have been complete at schools ranging from 30 days to 8 days. Some of the schools took over a month to complete. I wish there was some sort of timeline. This wait is really driving me crazy :'(.

I only applied to 4 schools. I think a lot also depends on your state. I am in Nebraska and UNMC had a pretty fast turn around. I think they interview nearly everyone from in-state because it's our only public state school and they have a very strong preference for in-state residents. Creighton, on the other hand, is taking foreverrrrrrr!

So I just finished up my last state interview and now have no more interviews scheduled. I'm lucky to come from an area with 'low-stat' state schools but am really interested in exploring other areas as well (currently the only communications I have gotten from oos schools are rejections). I'm very worried that I wasted a lot of money and time applying to 20+ oos schools 🙁😡 Of course, I will be very happy to go to any med school that decides to takes me... but we all have dreams right? 🙄

Thanks man, it's just such a grueling process and this is my second time doing it. It doesn't help that my parents are also freaking out and wondering if I'll ever get in. Just gets discouraging after a bit. I have good stats (well stats that I thought were great till i got to sdn, 69 LizzyM 😛). But I hate the wait like everyone else here, haha! Thanks for the pick me up

Hi all,
I got a 34 on my MCAT (12,11,11), I graduated in 2012 from Boston University with a major in Neuroscience with a 3.5 GPA (3.6 Science GPA) and have been working in a very well know Harvard Medical School Radiology Research Lab for the last year and a half. I have published several papers and have racked up a large amount of clinical and non-clinical volunteer and paid hours. I submitted my application on June 10th and submitted all of my secondaries within a week of getting them. According to my advisers, my essays were very good and my application was in great shape. The head of the BU premed office said I could expect to get around 10 interviews.
I applied to 30 schools and have had 0 interviews so far. My adviser at BU and mentor at my lab haven't been able to understand why this may be. I am a bit confused where I may have gone wrong and I was wondering if anyone here has heard of similar stories.

Thanks!

This leaves me scratching my head. 😕 I have no idea based on what you presented; I'm with you in wondering what exactly could be going on. Assuming you've already been reviewed at all of those schools, there must be something that makes them defer decision on your application... Even if you applied to the "top" 30 schools, your research experience, etc. should be enough to get at least a few interviews.

Just wondering -- you didn't mention how many rejections you've had so far. If I assume that means zero... you still have a chance to go 30/30 on interviews. I'd be curious to hear what happens in the next few months.

Did you apply to BU? I thought they were known for being speedy in decisions and reviewing apps in order of complete date.

I got rejected from BU, Hofstra, Drexel and U of Chicago. No status changes anywhere else...

It's very strange. I asked a professor at Harvard med to look over my application for any red flags, and she said everything looked great. No idea what to make of this.

The reason you haven't received any interviews is because you're a troll.

Figured if I don't get into those 5 schools then I won't get into many others so didn't want to spend money on applying to a lot I applied to 7 total but haven't heard from the last one about a secondary. I'm a female URM, reapplicant with a good amount of ECs that can't get the hang of this MCAT 🙁

There could also be a bad LOR in there somewhere. That's all I can think of. That's the only area in an application that you don't have full access to review before sending. Just an idea. I really hope somebody wouldn't do that to you though.
