2013-2014 Underdawgs Thread ( Lets get it)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Mcat = 23/ GPA 3.38 cumulative 3.9 science, and so far received ten secondaries. I know it doesn't mean acceptance by any means but it does give hope. So chins up

When did you submit? I think if you had submitted early, you would have had a very successful cycle. You still have a great shot in getting in somewhere. It is not too late by any means. GL.

Pretty late, like beginning of October. The shock after that mcat score took a while to ware off, plus I think being on SDN too much was getting depressing, lol. Thanks man, you guys in here have been in awesome 🙂

Anicetus accepted MD with 6 verbal

Someone accepted to ACOM and SOMA with 3.86/3.75/23. They have also been offered interview from TCOM.

CA resident with 3.13/2.90/27 has also received 4 ii's this year.

Lower mcat is not a death sentence for SOMA, and they seem to accept low scores fairly frequently. This is why I always recommend the school to underdogs.

It's not exactly a school for everyone however. I may be completely out of bounds here, but at least for me I want a more traditional medical school.

Which MD?... I guess getting into DO with a 5 in VR is not impossible then.

It's not impossible to get in with a 14 either. Historically a single person has managed. But do you really want to gamble over 2-3k? Honestly I'm sorry that you feel bad about not applying this year. But honestly and let's be real you saved your self enough money to enroll in a decent Mcat prep course this year.

Yes, I spoke with the recruiter at MSU. It's 80K OOS, and there's no getting around it. You can get state residence the next year, but still..
Plus they have an in state preference that exceeds 80%. The incredible 1st year tuition may account for a heavy in state application also, but it's crazy money.

How would you go about getting IS residence second year?

Yes and no. The tuition is what has me holding out for other schools, but MSU is so good that I'm 80% sure I'm going.

Yea I really love this school especially the campus...I'm only worried about the tuition... I'm hoping that there are some scholarships or grants that can help lower the OOS tuition...I already paid my deposit so I'm hoping it works out

Wait are you sure that OOS students can get in state status the second year???...I wouldn't mind paying for 80k if its only one year
That is what I heard from the recruiter when at a DO conference held at MSU. I'd suggest making your own calls and getting the info straight from them, but it's pretty common after some amount of time, (usually 6 months to a year) of living in a state you can switch to that state residency without issue.

3.36sgpa, 3.79nsgpa, 3.49cgpa, 26 MCAT (10ps/8vr/8bs). Ohio resident set on OU-HCOM. Collegiate athlete, good ECs. Thoughts? Thanks!

I just called the admission office and they said that OOS students cannot get IS residence so it would be 80K for all 4 years

I feel ya man. I just got the complete email today for WesternU.
At least Marian's hold email states that they will get back to me about a decision in a month, with many coming off the hold with an interview. Crossing my fingers for some love soon.

Will update when get home.

Will also slightly be jelly 😉
Add 1 more, accepted at WCUCOM!!
I could never have expected this cycle just a few months ago.

someone with 3.84/3.74/22 accepted to LUCOM.

A low gpa with a lot of retakes and a low mcat even with URM is going to make the cycle difficult. If he's only submitting, now then it gets even more difficult and tricky.

I have only scored the exam once. I know my cumulative GPA is crap but at least my post-bac was decent enough. I have been complete at most schools since mid October and finished up my last batch of secondaries later in October and early this month. I even got a secondary from Charles Drew which has been my biggest accomplishment so far haha. I'm a decent writer and interviewer so I am hoping I get some love out there but I know it will most likely come later in the cycle. I'm relentless and I never give up. Boom

There are now 3 spots open - ACOM, LUCOM, LMU-DCOM. I just submitted an e-mail declining my acceptance! Good luck.

Just received the formal CCOM rejection by mail. The letter was nice, good coloring, must've been a subtle off-white coloring with a watermark

someone with 3.30/3.32/22 accepted to WVSOM. They will also be interviewing at LUCOM. Also someone on mdapps was accepted to WVSOM this year with 3.7/3.5/21

Most people would have told them to retake the MCAT and apply next year. I would have told them to apply broadly to the low tier and newer schools and they would have a decent chance. Too many people on here seem to underestimate the forgiving-ness of new and low tier DO schools. It amazes me to see people in pre-osteo with 3.X GPA's and high 20's MCAT's freaking out about their chances.

User3 are you a med student?

That gives me hope! 😉

I need an opinion guys. I want to go on vacation for about 2-3 weeks in March or early April but I feel worried that this will be times when I get interviews potentially. Considering I have been complete since October/early November, what do you guys think?

WVSOM isn't a low tier school. It's very well established. However, they do look for an applicant that meets their mission.

Does anyone know if med schools can see whether you were on a +- grading system? For example, will they be able to see that my school doesn't offer B+ or B-, only B's? Because I was calculating my science GPA today and if my school offered B+ (which they don't) my sGPA would be a 3.3 instead of a 3.0. I'm pretty much a B+ student in all of my science classes which has really hurt my sGPA because I can only earn 3 points instead of 3.3 points.

Unfortunately for you, it probably does not matter. Even though you say you would have B+'s it is just as likely they could be B-'s from an adcoms standpoint so all they see is the 3.0.

Doesn't AACOMAS do the whole B+/B/B- thing?

Plus when you send in the official transcripts to each school they will see the school generated GPA.

His school doesn't offer +'s and -'s, so according to them he had a 3.0. AACOMAS uses them but not sure if they will reflect it since his school does not.

Oh, I don't know how I missed that.

My school didn't do the +/- thing either. I remember the guidelines for AACOMAS said if you get a B then put B.

gabbieR6, they will know when you matriculate because you have to send in official transcripts to the school.

3.6/3.9/22(6-8-8) accepted to LUCOM. But i'm literally hoping to get accepted anywhere else. Put on pre-interview holds on about 7 schools, been complete since october! (applied everywhere)

ahhhhhh

Hey everyone!
I was accepted to Rowan SOM 2 weeks ago with: 3.6/3.7/24 . Not URM, NJ resident.

Just wanted to say never give up!

Congrats!. 🙂 Why are you hoping to get somewhere else? is it because LUCOM is a new school?
