2013-2014 Underdawgs Thread ( Lets get it)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not true. Remember, in many programs you often compete with PHD students in your classes who are very passionate about their area of study and want to really well. Classes are graded on a curve, so it can be a struggle.

The grad course I was in this semester was graded borderline on attendance. The grad student in my class told me the majority of classes are graded like that ( And going through the course review system shows this to be true). So I don't really know where you're getting this view from tbh especially since grad professors know their students need at least a B to graduate and thus inflate.

Varies for programs I guess

Trust me, I'm in one

I was in a MBA-type program, so I can't comment on MSc's. My classes were all graded on a curve, but having come from a science background in my undergrad definitely helped me get to the top of the curve (3.97 gGPA).

Ok Peeps, entered my stuff in AACOMAS

cGPA 3.25

sGPA 3.29

MCAT- still waiting 😎

Can anyone fill me in on the entry regarding a repeated course? If you have repeated a course, do both the original and the repeat get designated R-01 and R-02 for a different course & repeat, etc.

Can anyone fill me in on the entry regarding a repeated course? If you have repeated a course, do both the original and the repeat get designated R-01 and R-02 for a different course & repeat, etc.

The first course you are retaking is designates R01, and the last retake is designated L01. The next course you are retaking is designated R02, and its last retake is designated L02, etc. If you retook a class twice, the original class is R01, the first retake is R01, and the last retake is L01.

In the future, please use the AACOMAS questions thread for these types of questions.

Thanks for heads up Hallowmann.

Copy, no more Q's in this thread. 👍

So as having been successful in previous years we're opening up the underdogs thread for this medical school admission cycle! I want this to be a place were we can respectfully discuss admissions issues and how to be successful in getting into medical school.

Gottcha, I hope AACOMAS verifies my neuro courses from my psych department as Bio or else I'm going to be extra pissy ( Especially since my Sgpa is losing 10 credits of As in math).

ehh... idk if you should include me yet serenade since I haven't got my final grades in yet

Add me up

GPA 3.14 MCAT 26
rewriting MCAT next week, hoping for a hi 30s

Reapps are honorary adds.

How about we add a supporters list for us non-underdogs who like these threads (and include all non-underdogs who think they are).

Maybe, but I'm doubtful since most grad programs are extremely grade inflated.

False, false, false. I don't know where you went, but none of the grad schools I know of/attended inflated anything. They were damned hard.

A top 50 neuro program. And I don't know, this isn't just my opinion. Most people on preallo and LizzyM see most grad programs are being highly inflated and that a gpa of 3.5 is average.

Is WVSOM easier to get into comparatively?

I don't know about comparatively because I was accepted early-ish and ended my cycle afterward but from what I've noticed, if you interview well you're likely to be accepted.

I was rejected post-interview at Marian, and lecomb pre-interview.

MUCOM is interesting, many people with low 3.0 sgpa's and 23-24 MCAT have gotten in, while people with numbers all over the board have been rejected....

Eh. Don't feel so much an underdog anymore.

I definitely belong here 🙂

3.4c / 3.29s / 24 (9,7,8) *first time, 25 (8,8,9) *no improvement 🙁

That's not too bad, if you apply early and smart ( 15+ schools) you'll get in somewhere.

Go underdogs!!! I am unfamiliar with how this list works but do we end up adding which schools gave us interviews etc on the list??

Hoping I'm not going to be in here.

Haven't had time to punch in my grades to AACOMAS yet, but they should be 3.4c/3.5s. MCAT at the end of the month, and doing well on practice tests.

When do they change or dispute grades we've entered or even review.

I kind of have to agree with you here. I have a lot of friends in grad school (MS and PhD programs) and it seems like they were really lenient. It may not be crazy easy to get a 4.0, but with a <3.0 being failing, it was crazy easy for them to get a passing grade by barely putting in effort and talking to the professor afterwards.

I'm sure some tough grad programs exist, but most of the non-SMP ones I've seen were pretty laid back with grading.

Also an Underdog. 3.25 science gpa 3.28 cumulative gpa. taking mcat in june, hoping for a 30+. I had one really bad year where i got around 1.5 and messed up my gpa ( personal ). i took extra year of courses before graduating (not a postbac) and i did really well in upper level courses about 3.7 in 300- 400 level science classes. Here are my top schools. What do you guys think?
1. MSUCOM ( instate)
2. NSUCOM
3. LECOM (both)
4. AZCOM
5. Marian

Add more schools! If you have a >30 MCAT, be sure to apply to Touro-NY, and a few other schools if you're interested.

Once you're in range, I think they put more emphasis on the interview than a lot of other schools.

When do they change or dispute grades we've entered or even review.

In verification they'll review the grades. They may change and/or dispute minor things or even send the app back to you to be corrected at that point.

Welp, I hope they don't hold mine back for a few classes.

Well here goes nothing,

3.1 cGPA, 3.1sGPA, 24MCAT (8/6/10), waiting on score from retake.
2 Years of research, 1000+ hours of volunteer work, 150+ hours of shadow/patient interaction.

Underdogs Unite!

Just got my retake scores, MCAT 26 (8/9/9), fairly happy. Makes my underdog track just a bit easier now

I'm a biology and psychology double major. Unless I do amazingly well on the MCAT, I'm an underdog.

3.39 cGPA, science GPA is under a 3.0 (not sure by how much; I haven't calculated it yet. Last time I calculated it, it was exactly at a 3.0, but then I got a C in biochem, so it's under now). My cGPA is going to go up after this semester; I just finished finals, and they all went well.

I haven't taken the MCAT, but I'm registered to take it on the 18th. I'm hoping to get a 30+. If I get under a 25, I don't think I'll apply this cycle.

My grades are so terrible, because I have been sick for my entire undergrad career. I know that I have more potential than my numbers would suggest; now I just have to convince a med school admissions committee.

I'm going to apply as early as possible, to at least 20 schools. LECOM, MUCOM in Chicago, Touro in NY, NSU-COM and Western U are my top choices.

Just got my retake to (8/8/10) for a whopping 26. Luckily I have an above average GPA of a 3.7. Hopefully these stats will get me some interviews

I also thought MUCOM was in Indianapolis.

 I thought it was clear that that is what I was getting at. They meant CCOM not MUCOM, which is nicely tucked away in the ?woods? of Indianapolis (seriously lovely campus, especially for being in the middle of a city).

Those stats look pretty good for an underdawg. Good luck this cycle!

You should have a shot at most schools, you're now a competitive applicant, congrats on the score improvement.

I'm pleased to inform you that you are no longer an underdog.
