2013-2014 Underdawgs Thread ( Lets get it)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
ahhh ok. Sounds like we have the same predicament. If you know you have the time and energy to study and do better than the first two, then by all means, go for it. But user3 is right, if you do go down it will come up as a orange-amber-red flag (depending on how much you drop)

I'm hoping my post-bacc program will not only bump up my gpa, but also prep me for the MCAT in the event that I absolutely need to take it next year. Though I'm in the same circumstance where I won't get grades until december.

If i don't mention that I am retaking my mcat and in the case that I do not improve my score. Am i forced to submit that score? I thought AAMC doesnt send scores automatically to D.O. schools?

i would not risk that. when you submit your applications you certify that you are not omitting any critical information (like new MCATs or bad transcripts). If a school later discovered such an omission, that would probably not sit well with them.

It probably breaks matriculation/acceptance agreements and you're completely liable to get dismissed at any time.

How much would it suck if you were kicking ass into the end of 4th year and you lost it all because a lost MCAT score popped up? Don't do it.

Oh okk, I think I'll hold of telling them I am taking it in the case I end up not retaking it, but ill send the score once it is received.

What are some low tier schools that a person with 3.2/27 (9,9,9) should look to apply OOS?

Hey guys
Got my Mcat today back. Got 32.
With a cGPA 3.25
Canadian.

Do you guys think I have a shot with any specific DO schools?
I applied to roughly 15 schools.

TIA!

Is Nova on your list? I was told that they are friendly to Canadians and they like high MCAT score...

DO schools don't really come in "tiers." Some schools focus on different parts of your application... some like high GPAs, some like higher MCAT scores. One thing I can guarantee is that as your numbers lower, the cycle gets more unpredictable (to a point, obviously). Your numbers are actually pretty close to mine and that's how things went for me.

+1 definitely add Nova.

Good job on the mcat and good luck!

ACOM, PNWU, KCOM, SOMA, TOURO-ny, WVSOM, NSU, LMU, LECOM's, TOURO nv, AZCOM, comp NW, touro ca, MUCOM, CUSOM and VCOM. Plus kycom WCU and PCOM ga if in region.

Vcom and wv aren't oos friendly to people with low stats, and definitely not pnwu

Add me to the list of underdogs!
3.92 cGPA, 3.87 sGPA, MCAT 24 (10BS, 6 V, 8 PS)

ps. canadian! 🙁

Yes.
I have heard of that, but is 32 considered 'high'?

Thanks mate!

Of course 32 is considered high for DO's! I doubt Nova's average will jump from 27 MCAT to 32 MCAT in just one year.

There's not as many underdawgs reporting like before. I see a true underdawg as ~3.0-3.1 sci/cum GPA and MCAT below 26.

So I'd be a less than average applicant but not an underdog with my 3.5c, 3.08s and 26?

Interesting, and sweet.
But aren't I still a underdog as I am Canadian applicant?
TIA

Just because you are Canadian doesn't make you an underdog.

Seriously, with a 32 on the MCAT, D.O. schools can tell that, despite your undergraduate institution, you are intellectually capable. Let's move on now. 👍

The MD underdog thread added requirements to become an underdog.

What are some of the schools which would prefer a higher gpa than mcat? Considering my gpa is above average and my mcat is below average?

Thank you

Same question but with opposite trends..schools that seem to like higher MCAT and below avg GPAs.

PCOM-GA has a regional bias? I thought they were pretty OOS friendly

i would like to know the same! seem to be seeing a lot of the reverse 😕

I had the same total MCAT and GPA, and WVSOM was one of the first schools to offer me an interview. They're OOS-unfriendly in their tuition and policies, not so much their selection of applicants.

PNWU was also fairly quick with the offer, but you have to show some sort of tie to the state, or at least the region. In my case, I went to high school in Spokane. MO resident since 2004 though.

Sounds unfriendly to me, although I don't think WVSOM's OOS tuition is so bad (I applied there) and I think it doesn't stick for the entire 4 years.

If I lived in the sound for a couple years, does that count as ties as well?

Maybe, but not enough to dissuade me (unlike TCOM).

Well, relative to their IS tuition I thought it was a little high. And your deposits are a lot higher (although if you're set on them this isn't a big deal).

And yeah, that totally counts. If they send you a secondary you have a place to talk about your experiences living there. Of course, the trouble is conveying on your primary that you have a tie. For me, the only thing I had was my high school... who knew that would actually matter?

How is rocky vista to Canadian applicants?

Btw, anyone know roughly how soon do secondaries come in?
I was verified on June 4th.

It's 3,000 dollars of my tuition already paid. 😀 (Seriously the tuition costs make me wanna cry, but everything else about WVSOM is awesome, and in the end it won't matter when we're making 6 figures a year.)

Hopefully that's the case. If so, phew, and awesome.

i think they are partial to the southern/southeast states.
Darn. I applied to them, while being Canadian.

Nice GPAs though... You will need a 24+ to get a decent shot, but 26+ will give you the opportunity to be 'choosy'...

Well guys looks like I officially joined this group after getting my May 11th MCAT score back. I have a 3.2 sGPA and a 3.54 non science GPA. My MCAT however is a dismal 22 🙁 7/7/8. I will note I am a URM and have thousands of hours of clinical experience, with 3 DO LoR's and 1 MD LoR. I will note I am retaking my MCAT in July. My practice exam avg was a 28.

My stats are identical to yours, my last year's MCAT was a 21 and I am retaking it in July.

Do you think with our stats its a waste of time to even apply if we dont get a higher MCAT score ?

I'll be honest, retake it. If you're Hispanic or American Indian then you're far below the average admitted, if you're African American then you're close to the average, but I would still recommend a retake as you could easily get into better schools or MD schools with even a 26-27.

Lets just put it this way, kill the mcat next time.

Well I already applied on June 1st cause I felt like I would have had at the very least a 26 on the MCAT. So with all the money I have invested in apps I have no choice but to go for the retake, and at least try to redeem myself.

I wouldnt even have the chance of redeeming myself this cycle, I'm just hoping I kill the MCAT this time.

I hope so 😕

The only obstacle is that the MCAT is a Kraken infused with Adamantium and I'm not even Green Arrow :bang::beat:

Consider a prep course and work on it real hard I guess. I hear Princeton review does great things.

I averaged a 30 on AAMC 9, 10, and 11 and got a 24 on the real thing. I have a 3.97 cGPA and 3.92 sGPA so I feel your pain bud. Retaking 8/16 and hoping for big gains.

What happened on MCAT? Did you not study at all? Nerves? With a GPA as high as yours, your understanding of the material alone should get you mid 20s without any prep.

WOW...All I have to say...based on your sGPA you know the material but can you apply it?

Are you saying 26-27 is good for MD if someone is an African American with 3.2 sGPA? Like in my case if I got 28+, can I throw a hail and apply to some low tier MD (HBCU MDs)? I thought MD was out of the question due to my low GPAs...

I missed entering a class in the coursework part of the application -.- ( Already sent it in)

Do you think that'll hold up my application? Should I call AACOMAS on Monday and tell them to add it?

I dont understand why so many people score lower on the real MCAT than the AAMCs. They really need to make more realistic AAMCs.

Have you not been verified yet? If you have, they may have changed it. If not, then yes call them Monday.
