2013-2014 Underdawgs Thread ( Lets get it)

What happened on MCAT? Did you not study at all? Nerves? With a GPA as high as yours, your understanding of the material alone should get you mid 20s without any prep.

I studied, obviously not enough...the thing with my GPA is that my undergrad university was not difficult at all. I easily obtained A's with very little studying so I did not learn the material like I should have. I didn't know I wanted to go to med school until after I graduated so I didn't think that much of it, now I'm kicking myself in the butt fir not attending a better undergrad university and for not going above the required work to really learn the material.
I am basically teaching myself everything now with some basic/minimal memory of a few concepts. It sucks.

I have a 3.86 overall g.p.a. and a 3.78 science and a 23 mcat (6PS9V8BS). I am Hispanic and a Texas resident. I have plenty of shadowing and volunteer hours along with a study abroad trip and two medical volunteer trips to Central America. I plan on retaking my mcat in August because I am pretty sure nerves got the best of me.

3.61 cgpa, 3.57 sgpa, 23 mcat (5PS, 9V, 9BS) with over 500+ (shadowing, volunteering at hospital, community service, research intern)

I'll be frank, with a sub 6 score your chances of acceptance anywhere are borderline non-existent. I recommend you either sign up to retake in August or consider taking a year off to aim for a 30 on the mcat.

Aim high, with a good score you should be able to get into one of the Texas med schools without much problem.

still not verified...ugh

Hey guys,
I have cGPA of 3.39, science gpa of 3.33 and nonscience gpa of 3.58. I have a MCAT score of 27. (11 in Verbal, 10 in Bio and 6 in PS)
How's it looking?

You are not an underdog IMO. You will likely get multiple acceptances if you apply broadly.

I'm Canadian applicant though. Would that make any difference?

That definitely makes a difference. I think you are an underdog for being Canadian. You should apply to schools that are canadian friendly such as Nova and MSU-COM.

Serenade do you think that I would have a chance at D.O. schools with my current 23 mcat?

Your gpa is strong, but your mcat is 2.5 points below the average for Hispanic applicants. So you may be able to get in, but it likely won't be TCOM or established schools. So in my you should really try to do better on your retake so you can have a shot at Texas Schools that'll be 2-4x cheaper than most others.

hi guys!

long time lurker here. decided to post to get some feedback. i have a 3.2/3.05 26 mcat. thing is, im scheduled to retake on thursday but i feel like i'm not prepared at all. alot has been going on and although i have reviewed content, i haven't taken a full length yet. i'm thinking of voiding the thing. do i stand a chance with my numbers right now? what do you guys think?

all feedback welcomed, thanks!

edit: i have 2 relatively strong science LOR, 1 non science and 1 DO. decent ec as well.

Yes but apply very broadly.

Chances are fine despite the 5 ps and 23 overall. GPA will help tremendously.

With a 3.36 cGPA, (3.1 sGPA and 3.54 nonscience) and a 31 MCAT, do I still stand a chance of getting in? I'm a CA resident and would like to attend Western University in Pomona, but plan on applying broadly in the hopes of getting an interview somewhere

You are not an underdog. Chances are great.

cGPA: >3.4
sGPA: >3.4
MCAT: 26 [10 BS 10 PS 6 VR]

Do I even stand a chance of getting an acceptance?

you think so? i thought since both my mcat and gpa are way below average, I wouldn't have a chance this cycle at all. i don't have alot of experience with the process so I'm very confused about it.

Does anyone else have any input on this? I'm retaking on thursday but depending on how I do AAMC 10 tomorrow, I'll decide to void or not to void (28+ i dont void and anything below, i void).
3.2/3.05 26 mcat. any advice is appreciated.

Someone with 3.0 sgpa and 26 got into LMU, someone with 3.0 sgpa and 24 got 3 interviews, someone with 3.01 sgpa and 24 got into CUSOM, someone with 3.2 sgpa and 23 got 5 interviews, someone with 2.94 sgpa and 26 got into LECOM E, and someone who applied in feb with 3.1/3.2/25 got interviews from 4/8 schools. I think you have a decent shot based on the people I have seen applying in the past. Apply to LMU, CUSOM, MUCOM, ACOM, WVSOM, LECOM E, Touro NV, SOMA, PCOM Ga, WCU, VCOMs, KYCOM, PNWU, COMP NW and KCOM.

3.30 cGPA, 3.20 sGPA, MCAT TBA, took it 5/18/13 (but I got 30-32 on all my practice tests and feel really good about the actual one, so fingers crossed).

Applying to MSUCOM (Michigan resident), Marian University COM, CCOM, LECOM-Erie... not sure where else to apply, also applying to in-state MD schools (we've got 6 in Michigan, so it's worth a shot since all but one have in-state preference and I go to U of M).

I'm confident about my MCAT but not so much about my grades, so there you go, underdog!

Just got my MCAT scores back, 31 (PS9, VR9, BS13)

A bit lower than I was hoping 🙁

Are you sure? Isn't that 6 in VR a huge red flag? 😳 I'd retake, but I'm not confident that I can achieve 10s in the sciences again. :scared:

A 6 in VR is not ideal but it's ok... You will get multiple interviews... Don't retake if you are not confident you can get a 10s in BS/PS.

I guess it's time for me to join. Just got my mcat score back. Not too happy with myself.

Thank you very much

cGPA: 3.6
sGPA: 3.52
MCAT: 26 [10 BS 10 PS 6 VR]

Half Hispanic, half ORM
Nontrad, NY resident

Do I even stand a chance of getting an acceptance if I apply to every DO school? 😳

Am I considered an underdog because of that 6 in VR?

Thanks for the advice. I was verified on June 4th and I'm literally going to apply to every single DO school, but I still feel very uneasy about that 6 in verbal. 🙁

Now that I've got real MCAT scores I can post for real

2.95 cGPA
3.27 sGPA
MCAT 26 (10/8/8)

Strong LOR
8+ years in EMS as a paramedic
Volunteer work
Non science research
Level II trauma center experience
Education/Precepting

Biggest red flag is numerous retakes. Finally got my study habits where I need them to be successful.

22 mcat will make things iffy and will screen you out of a handful of schools. But your GPA's are very strong, so you might have a shot at schools like VCOM, MUCOM, ACOM, CUSOM, WVSOM and LMU.

Am I considered an underdog because of that 6 in VR?

not an UD even with the vr 6. you will have interviews out the wazoo

You are not an underdog.

I thought I was based on my GPA before my MCAT scores came in today. Is it bad that my score is split between a 9PS 9VR and 13BS? I hear they don't like widely different section scores.

I honestly can't tell if you are being serious or not..

You can do that, I mean I got my score back after I already applied so I have no choice. I would recommend a retake tho

Thank you for your advice, I will definitely retake the Mcat on August. Is there a down side for me to apply before I retake it. Since my Mcat isn't high so I will only apply to my instate school and like 1 or 2 out of state Schools.

I would love to here your opinion!

Statistically you're in a hole. I recommend you really consider retaking. Otherwise chances are you will not get into a DO school.
