2013-2014 Underdawgs Thread ( Lets get it)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can I be added to the underdawgs? I applied late (september) but I should be verified in the next week or so.

My numbers are:
3.12 cgpa
3.68 sgpa
31 MCAT (11 PS, 10 VR, 10 BS)

decent ecs (100+ hrs clinical volunteering, extensive nonclinical, non trad)

some major weaknesses though (low cgpa, no direct shadowing).

Is there even a point to continuing to move forward this late, I'm thinking about just waiting until next cycle and working on my app (pick up more clinical exp and shadowing, possibly retake mcat?)

At the end of the day though, no matter what I do to improve my app this yr, I would still be an underdawg.

So roll the dice and see what happens or wait and apply early?

I only submitted a primary to one school, was going to add more once I got verified.

lol, you have a blip but your MCAT and sGPA more than cover for it.

I think by now it should be obvious that it's hard to judge chances based off someone else's stats. Who really cares....

I got lost in stats last year and didn't end up getting in even though I was competitive. It's so hard to really judge (within reason). Just gives me heart break and head aches. Sometimes acceptances just don't make sense. Also, I agree this years thread has been kind of weird
Unless things have changed with my last two interviews, or the one I have tomorrow...I might be sitting on a lot of wait/alternate listings, which means I'll be holding my breath for the next six months.

This has been a very humbling and confusing experience, one I hope to never have to experience again (i.e., I hope I get in this year) 👍

Hang in there and don't give up hope.
Clear this funk before your interview tomorrow, don't go in already looking defeated.
Remember, they wouldn't have invited you if they weren't interested, show them why you will be good for their program.
Best of luck tomorrow.

3.3s, 3.6c, 21Q MCAT.
Retaking MCAT in January.

Got an interview with these stats last year. Hoping for the best this year!!!

I hope either you meant 60 or you're drunk 😉

Agreed lol a 70 is moderately competitive for mid tier MDs and very competitive for low tier MDs.

Highest Lizzy M I know of personally was a 75 who matriculated into a top 20 school

No, I meant to say 70. I have a 3.3 GPA and a 30 MCAT - and it has been nothing but adversity the past two years. I do have a 3.85 gradGPA, but different schools may interpret the relative merits differently. In any case, I've applied broadly, and only 2 interviews so far, so I do feel that I am under-dogging it this year.

Disclaimer: I did not say 70, I said LESS than 70 🙂

63 is a far cry from 70. It's a crap shoot either way, I'll admit. But you consistently see people on here with 3.5/25 getting 5+ interviews. I think if you have a Lizzy M of 60 and at least average EC's you have a very good chance of getting in somewhere.

When were you complete? If less than a month ago, it's a time factor, not a stats factor.

I'm on hold at 5 schools and I interviewed at a top 40 which I was shocked to have been invited, but it was a top choice so I poured my heart and soul into it. I also interviewed at a new medical school (only has matched 1 class so far...) keeping my fingers crossed!

So you're talking about MD, not DO?

It's nice here though, may I join you folks for a little while?

What's the eqn for Lizzie score again?

Wondering why Triagepremed got banned.

Wow... I read his/her last few posts and none of them seem to be offensive or out-of-line in any kind of way... I think some of the mods can get carried away sometimes.

What to people think about my resume? I just got my MCAT score and it's lower than expected 🙁

22 MCAT - 8 PS / 7 VR / 7 BS
3.6 science GPA
3.63 cumulative GPA

150 hours interning - Orthopedic Surgeon
300 hours shadowing - DO

Various community service things.

It's kind of late to submit your application now, so you might as well dedicate the next few months to improving your mcat score and then submit your primary Day 1 of the next cycle. Your GPA is excellent. Don't sell yourself short.

That ^

Plus, if you get an MCAT > 30, your fantastic GPA* allows you a decent chance at MD programs. Think about that; it's worth it. Good luck!

*assuming it's without retakes

I am looking forward to that challenge! I will still be tickled pink if Marian calls me this week, but I think I would have to lean towards Western when picking between the two 😀

You guys are going to have to thank Touchpause13 for going back and adding in a good deal of information to the list. Originally I kinda wanted to stay away from doing a list and just create a thread where people could just seek advice, but I'll try to keep the list updated from now on.
