Thank you Ogmora and Elevencents for providing your insight. I regret waiting so long to apply.. Unfortunately it looks like the damage is done though :/ Which schools do you think I could have a shot at for this round and may be worth putting an app in for? Ideally I would love to stay in the Northeast primarily for family reasons, but I would be more than grateful for a shot at any school this round.
Also, Ogmora if you don't mind me asking.. what were your stats? Congratulations on your acceptance to your top choice.. that is truly fantastic!
General side note.. I wish when schools asked "why DO" I could just provide a link to SDN DO forums vs. the MD ones... Everyone here is so friendly and helpful - and no doubt will make fantastic future physicans 🙂
Congrats! Would you mind sharing your stats?Wooohooo! DO CLASS OF 2018 and as a super underdog applicant, it feels like a miracle!
I would definitely add CUSOM as someone else suggested. I know it is not the Northeast, but it is at least close enough to visit home during breaks. We have a ton of people in our class from the Northeast. I submitted my primary to CUSOM on thanksgiving last year with a LizzyM score about 2 points below yours, so it's worth adding them for sure. I love CUSOM, everyone here is so nice and helpful!Hi Everyone,
I'm super new to SDN and wanted to ask everone's advice:
I know my stats would not have been terrible for this cycle had I applied MUCH earlier on in the cycle.. but I am aiming to submit my primary tomorrow(I know, terribly late at this point.. most likely screwed myself :/) Here's my stats:
3.44c
3.19s
28 MCAT
2 DO letters
1 sci
2 work (I've been out of school for a year and work in clinical research)
1 non sci
These are the schools I plan on putting in an app for: PCOM(top choice), PCOM(GA),RowanSOM, LECOM(both campuses), Touro(Harlem), Nova, VCOM, WVCOM, UNECOM
Do you think I have any type of shot at PCOM(Philly) or NJSOM at this point in the cycle? I know that would be a stretch.. at this point I would be happy with even a glimmer of hope at any school.
Thanks so much for your advice 🙂
I agree with Elevencents. If you apply to new schools, you may have a chance, but you'd have a much better chance at your top choice schools if you apply next cycle. Schools won't even see your app until it's verified in mid-December, then you'd have secondaries sent to you anywhere from days to weeks of them receiving the primary. By the time you send in the secondaries it will be very, very close to the deadlines.
Speaking from experience, I applied late last cycle (submitted October and wasn't verified until around this time November.) Sent my app to ~20 schools and I received 0 ii's. This cycle I applied to about half as many schools with the same stats in early June and have been fortunate enough to have 3 ii's and an acceptance to my top choice. In retrospect I would have been better off saving the ~$600+ and the mental anguish that came with applying.
Underdog here as well.
27 MCAT
3.37 cgpa
3.27 sgpa
Pretty unique ECs. Started a chapter of a non-profit organization that raised money for people in third world countries that don't have access to medicine. Also started a club for members in homosexual, interracial, and abusive relationships (basically a support group) after I was cut-off for by my parents for being in an interracial relationship. We spread awareness of homosexual, interracial and abusive relationships around campus as well as raised money for woman shelters in NYC.
Schools I applied to (was complete at all the schools, except for the last 4, about a month ago)
*Lake Erie
*NYCOM
*Touro NY
*PCOM
*VCOM
*UNECOM
*NJCOM
*LECOM Bradenton
*CCOM
*MUCOM
*NSUCOM
Chances? Any thoughts would be appreciated. I still haven't heard back from schools even though I have been complete for almost a month and its really worrying me.

hello I have arrivedI am surprised at this. Someone last year with similar stats to you (coolingglasses) got seven interviews (albeit he said he had strong EC's). It looks like he submitted his secondaries late september/early october, so he didn't apply super early either. Here is his mdapps: http://www.mdapplicants.com/profile.php?view=viewprofile.demographics&id=25687&cycle=15088
My primary for DO just got verified. I am hoping to send in all my secondaries by the end of next week.
Stats:
9/8/11: VR: 6 PS: 8 BS: 5 Total: 19
4/26/13 VR: 8 PS: 9 BS: 8 Total: 25

School list: SOMA, AZCOM, Edward Via X2, Kansas, Lake Erie, Liberty, Lincoln, NOVA, Oklahoma State, Touro Ca/NV, West Virginia, Western OR/CA, William Carey.
Chances please?
Apply to more schools. Add VCOM, LECOM-E, ACOM, MUCOM, CUSOM, WVSOM, KCOM, PNWU, TUNCOM, and LMU to be safe.3.44 sGPA, 3.2 cGPA
1st MCAT: 23 (9 BS, 8 PS, 6VR)
2nd MCAT 25 (10 BS, 10 PS, 5VR)
EC's are good, LOR's are in. Still waiting on interviews -- applied to NYCOM, TouroCOM, and SOMA. Chances?
I agree with user3... Adding more schools will definitely augment your chances and these schools that user3 suggest mights not be too rigid on your VR scoreApply to more schools. Add VCOM, LECOM-E, ACOM, MUCOM, CUSOM, WVSOM, KCOM, PNWU, TUNCOM, and LMU to be safe.
hey all underdogs, I'm about to join 😉
let me copy and paste from my WAMC post

Recently I'm in the middle of big decision between DO or PharmD. I've been serving US army as a pharmacy Tech for more than 4 years and about to have honorable discharge.
Getting Bachelor Degree in December 2013
cGPA: 3.34
sGPA: 3.05
MCAT: 27 (10 ps, 7 v, 10 bs)
Shadowing: DO & MD about 100 hours
Leadership: Executive Leader at Christian Club in CC, Leader of small group in Church (for 4 years)
Senior Tech of pharmacy tech soldiers for 3 years, Senior leader of army physical training for 2 years
Volunteer: 500 hours as Red Cross volunteer at army hospital
LOR: Way more than average..they want me to succeed
Awards: More than 10 military awards and ribbons + certificate
Healthcare Experience: 4 years of experience at army pharmacy
I'm going to either attend one of the accepted pharmacy schools or may apply for DO school next cycle.
What do you think my chance for DO?
========================================================================================================================
I may try MCAT for this coming May or June one more time.. after I get out of military, I'll be having more time to prepare.
Also, I'll shadow & get more LORs from physicians + more volunteers.
because of such a short history of each schools I have attended, I have never met pre-med committee or wutever close to lol.. and I see many schools require LOR from them. Should I just submit more LOR from physicians or professors?
Thank you very much and good luck with this year!
I think you have a great chance. Your stellar story makes up for the low sGPA (in my opinion). It's critical, and great, that you broke a 3.0. Your MCAT score is fine, though I would be much more certain of your chances if you do get a 30+ on the MCAT.
My school also does not have a pre-med committee; I find that most schools have a specific numbers of letters/categories of writers that they will want in lieu of a committee letter. Just make sure you have at least 2 science professors and a good personal reference letter or two (maybe from some of your volunteer or healthcare supervisors) as well. Make sure you look at the specifics required by the schools you want to apply to, because your experience may vary from mine (I applied MD heavy, so the two science were pretty much necessary).
I think you'll be a great doctor some day. 😀

apply NOW, to at least 15 schools. you should be able to get in somewhere.
You're very welcome.Thank you very much. I didn't expect this quick response!
I know I will have very small chance for MD..and I personally like the concept of Osteopathic Medicine too. I'm still undecided from my two choices (go to pharmacy school to become class of 2018 or challenge medical school to become class of 2019) but recently my heart told me to go try med school.
yes, I really appreciate DO schools' grade replacement policy..or I would've not made 3.0 for sGPA. =/
You're very welcome.
As I said, you definitely have it in you. If you like the concept of osteopathy, great; apply, and you will get in to many of the schools you apply to. My opinions is that you go for DO and not pharmacy... but of course I'm biased towards medicine.
Good luck. 👍
Good luck on the future I too am worried if my husband changes base we may have to live apart which is not really what I wantbecause of additional military issues that me and my wife have, I can't actually attend for class of 2018 unless we sacrifice something big (which is living separate for at least two years)
I would rather use this extra time to shapen myself.
but hey, user3, thank you very much. You just encouraged me so much =)
Hey just wanted to know how all you guys keep yourselves occupied while waiting for interview invites. I currently am recovering from hand surgery and don't see any employers wanting a gimpy man.
Good luck on the future I too am worried if my husband changes base we may have to live apart which is not really what I want
Thank you for your service too and it is not always easy knowing you may have to live apartYes, this is big issue to us too. anyways, thx for the service your husband has done too!!
How have you not been accepted yet?
Who knows, all I know now is that I understand a quote a person on here stated about applying being the most humbling process ever.
Either way, if I don't get in I'll be happy to give myself another opportunity to improve my mcat, get some more shadowing in, and stay on this side of the Mississippi.

I have faith in you! 😍
Where at?Well, I have hope that a few schools take me off hold and start sending some love. But until then I have at least 1 more interview that hopefully will give a better feel than the last.
Where at?
if I fail to get accepted this year, and watch anime.
Well, some people disagreed with me being an under"dawg" based on my high MCAT score (36), but I think a 3.1ish AACOMAS GPA is something difficult to deal with and is much lower than most people listed on the front page. The lesson I've learned so far is that a good MCAT doesn't make up for a low GPA.If, I may ask what are EC's like for the under dawgs ? I feel my ECs are not on par with everyone around here.

Thanks 🙂 I think you'll find many people with low GPA/MCAT scores will do whatever they can (read: are not bashful about taking time off/being non-traditional) to get into medical school. However, I feel that a low MCAT score is something that can easily be changed with relatively minimal work (plus the scores "expire" every few years), so my advice for that is always to try harder. A low GPA is something that takes a LOT of time to fix... whereas MCAT scores can vary based on superficial conditions/small variations in content.WOW! Besides having a great MCAT score you have amazing ECs. I think I need to get my ED volunteer hours up. Because I only have about 80. I know that's really bad.
Now I fell like I have to take a gap year 🙁. I am trying to looking into something else besides ER because I feel like I am not getting anything out of it.4 years working as a CNA
3 years collegiate rugby player, captain my senior year
3 years sorority, vice president for 3 semsters
1 year TAing
40 hours shadowing MD and DO
> 100 hours volunteering, mostly at ER and at a rape crisis center
Thanks 🙂 I think you'll find many people with low GPA/MCAT scores will do whatever they can (read: are not bashful about taking time off/being non-traditional) to get into medical school.
I don't think 80ish volunteer hours is bad. Schools will look for a breadth and depth of experiences. IMO, 80 hours was enough to get a deep enough ED volunteering experience.
Think I am going to try to bump it up a little to over hour before I apply in the upcoming cycle. Can you guess tell me how my ECs look.
Volunteer
Teacher Assistant - 1 semester- underserved area.
Second year Class rep. - 1 year
Research- so far one semester and continuing
Shadowed DO - 30 hours - letter hopefully
Immigration Campaign- 1 semester
Vice President of a club- 1 semester
President for 1 semester
Added a Northeast Conference
Tutor for a year
-80 hours volunteering hospital
Peer mentor - 1.5 years
Paid
1 semester job
A job in the summer time
Any suggestion on what i need to improve on ?
AgreedLooks good to me, except that I think you need more clinical volunteering hours. Try putting 5hrs/week from now till June 1 2014, when the next application cycle starts. This will add ~150 more hours to your hospital volunteering and shows a long-term commitment.

why thank you sirWhat is your GPA/MCAT?
For still being in college (I assume?), your ECs looks exceptional. I was just looking over my CV today and realized how little of it actually came from my time in/before college. Keep up the good work.
Just learn how to sell yourself (i.e., really explain what you mean by some of that stuff) and you'll be good. For example, do you see how Marvinv said "150 hours as Department Coordinator for Hospital Floor" and not "150 hours in a hospital"? Schools will want to hear relevant details that will make you sound impressive, important, and experienced. I'm not saying that your application doesn't reflect that, but just keep it in mind. 🙂
😉. Hey, I'd take you in my (imaginary) med school just based on your experiences.why thank you sir
