2013-2014 Underdawgs Thread ( Lets get it)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was forced/ given advice by my advisor to "just take it again" stupidly i just kept taking them. 24,21,22,24

Your advisor should have their balls nailed to a piece of wood. I mean... You're in a genuine pickle here man. No improvement in the Mcat isn't what any school wants to see.
Consider messaging Goro for what he thinks because at this point your application is in limbo. Chance are however you're going to need to retake it this time and get a 28+ or you may need to consider alternatives. Either way, message Goro.

What type of applicant? I mean regardless it seems like plenty of student who didn't get into U Colorado are happy to go here.
I forget about the specific type, it was people who have a lot of volunteerism and healthcare work experience or something. It's not a stated bias, just something I've picked up on talking to people.

Hmm interesting.

thank you i will message him, i am in a HUGE state of limbo
I took it, got a 21 then retook it with about 3 weeks to study and got a 23. Chin up during this cycle! No one knows if you will get in except for the admissions committees. Keep us posted and good luck!

How do I stack up? 3.7cGPA 3.55sGPA 24MCAT. I have a lot of extra-curricular/ community service. EMT and Fire Fighter. Shadowed alot etc.. Most of my supplementals are in, just waiting on my committee letter which my Prof is taking so long on.
Applied to:
Chicago COM
Lake Erie COM - Bradenton- REJECTED before interview.
Lake Erie COM - Erie/Seton Hill, PA
Michigan State University COM, MI
Nova Southeastern University COM, FL
NYIT COM, NY
PhiladelphiaCOM
Rowan University SOM
West Virginia SOM
Western U Health Sciences/COM Pacific

Your GPA is great, fantastic ECs, but your MCAT is holding you back. I can't believe your advisor told you to just retake it. That's horrible advice! If you take it a 5th time you need to score at least a 27-28.

Out of that list I think WVSOM will respond to you first.

Low chances at PCOM, CCOM, and NOVA. Don't be surprised if they never get back to you. I could have told you LECOM-B would be an auto reject. They're pulling in high MCAT applicants these days.

I've noticed that DMU seems to have a bias towards applicants with a lot of patient experience. They even mention it on their website

You have decent chances at LUCOM ACOM CUSOM MUCOM LMU VCOM-CC SOMA KCOM and KCUMB, among others. Add a few of these to be safe

I went from a 22 to a 28 in 5 weeks. If you want my opinion, you do have to take it again. Just because DO schools have lower stats than MD schools you still need an above average MCAT score-preferably a 27+. Take multiple practice tests until you hit at least an average score of 29 on each test. The AAMC tests are the best indicator. The actual MCAT test shows a deviation of + or - 2 so with a 29 you would at least hit a 27.

Keep in mind that if you want to improve then this will take at least a few months of hard core studying. Good luck with whatever you choose to do man, anyone can do it and you have to potential to succeed.

I don't know about KCOM and SOMA.

I've heard MUCOM is pretty selective. They're turning out to be an impressive institution.

LUCOM, ACOM, CUSOM, LMU, VCOM... MAYBE KCUMB.

They also told me they prefer applicants with recent (less than two years) upper level science courses, which was one of the biggest red flags in my application as a nontrad. Oh well.

KCUMB has a 3.5/27 ( 28 this year)
MUCOM has the lowest int to accept ratio in DO-Dom
VCOMs are location selective
SOMA is big on mission and frankly the school is not for everyone
KCOM is a 3.X/27 ( probably 28 this year as well)

So basically that leaves you with
LUCOM
ACOM
CUSOM
LMU

Where did you get that number for KCUMB? Website says 26 for MCAT.

I was accepted to RVU, and from what I could tell, the interviewers were interested quite a bit about my direct care experience, Undergrad research, and Upper level Bio courses.

Yeah I'm taking that online this spring. Not excited.
Actually... Not to sounds like a weirdo but that was my absolute favorite class. I took it online through UNE and I couldn't have been happier with it. I found it super interesting and it honestly validated all the seemingly disjointed information I learned in all my other prereqs. If you like understanding how the human body works at its most basic levels.. Then I think you'll love it as well!

Personally Biochem was one of my favorite classes. It was the class that truly in my opinion made sense of a lot of holes in previous classes. It would have been the best class had my professor lectured from the book and not from his ass. I mean mechanisms are great, but when the book doesn't cover them, I don't think you should test them.

LMU DCOM INTERVIEW WOOOOOOOOO!!!! 2/21!
When I talked to them over the phone they mentioned how I was lucky to call because they are booking up fast. If you have applied here and have been complete since November I recommend calling and asking to check your status. Good luck everyone!!!

I gave up my spot for February 7th. Best of luck to the one who gets it!

By the way, what is everyone wearing to the interviews? I wore a suit with a collared shirt. At one of my interviews, a girl wore black stretch pants. Not that it's my business, and who knows maybe after flight/hotel, stretch pants were all she could afford (although she was wearing a shirt that didn't look cheap)....but it will bug me. Did stretch pants girl get in?? Superficial? Yes. But it made it seem like the interview wasn't as important to her and she looked unprofessional. For those of you wondering what to wear, please wear a suit with a jacket! You will be the awkward minority if you don't. I'm sure stretch pants girl felt extremely underdressed. I'm not trying to be a superficial jerk but med school interviews are meant to be professional. If you don't have a suit, buy one (goodwill has great deals! $6 very nice jackets) or borrow one...but please...no stretch pants.

What kind of stretch pants are you talking about? Yoga pants?

I feel like a jerk for thinking about how unprofessional her outfit was but in the interview, you are applying for your doctorate degree at a multi million dollar medical school. I just feel like you should dress as professional as you intend to act as a doctor. She obviously had a lot going for her, otherwise she wouldn't have had the interview. But what if the interviewers were superficial jerks? haha. I would just hate for my outfit to take away from what they think of me. I mean, if you have done ANY research at all about what to wear to a med school interview, you will know: WEAR A SUIT. So it just seemed like she was unprepared, unprofessional, and didn't care enough to try to look like she actually wanted the "job". What do I know...she might have gotten a full ride scholarship, lol.

Haha they were black spandex leggings with zippers at the ankles.
Eeeeeeeh...
Yeah, some thrift stores have good options. I have seen clothing with tags on them at Goodwill. This isn't a last-minute issue, either. Preparing for application to medical school takes a long time, so I believe someone could use that time to find a decent, affordable option just in case an interview invite happens.

Goodwill definitely carries interview-caliber stuff. It may not always fit, but for another $20-30 you can get it tailored in.

Is it too early to start the Underdog 2014-2015 thread 😛? For those of us who are starting to get our application materials ready haha
Too early! it should start in May IMO... I think someone already volunteered to do it... This cycle 'underdog thread' is a disaster. I hope it will be better next cycle.

Update for me if you want to add it to the front.

IIs at NSU(already there), MUCOM, Touro NV, ACOM, LECOM-B, Touro CA

Accepted at Touro NV. Declined/withdrew app to interview at Touro CA, ACOM, LECOM-B.

I was talking about the thread itself. It is not organized, not being updated etc... I was not talking about the applicants. Apparently, the applicant pool has been successful.

tbh, do you think it really matters where we put a gold star next to someone's name on the front of this thread? Everyone goes to the last page anyway and honestly the common theme is that no one's example is standardized which invalidates the entire premise of a wall. That being said, I'm not extremely behind in updating it either. Unless a person requests to be on it, I don't put them on. Plenty of people have pm'd me and requested to be removed off it in the first 3 months when I was updating frequently.

Either way, by April you're free to make one yourself and patrol it hourly.

Easy bro. No need to hyperbol. It's a legit issue and it's not being updated like folks want it to be. I second the post. I'd like to see it updated.

Meh, I'll go back and update the list a bit. I'm only missing about 2 weeks worth of name since no ones getting accepted on Christmas to New Years.

SOMA rejection letter by snail mail today. I liked CCOMs letter better, better use of font and type of paper

sGPA 3.55 | cGPA 2.97 | MCAT 27 (9/9/9) | CUSOM, UNECOM & VCOM-CC | UNECOM & VCOM-CC

Headed to VCOM-CC this fall! Wah-HOO!

Congrats! At first I read 2.97 at 3.97 and I wondered why this was in the underdog section 😛. Good luck!

As one of the founders of this back in the day, glad to see it's still going strong... though some of these numbers wouldn't have qualified as underdogs 3 years ago  Good luck to you all.

Whatup Dan, I remember you from the original thread!
