2014 Nontrad Applicants' Progress Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I completed my 19th secondary today, with something like five more to go. I'm seriously considering not filling out the Loyola secondary just because I'm not sure I have the energy to write decent responses to their loaded questions. I also got "complete" status at three schools!

30 years old decided last summer to make the career change. Married with three kids and #4 on the way. Sitting at about a 3.2 overall and 3.4 science. Pulled straight 4.0 last three semesters while going to school and working full time. Hoping to get it anywhere - just gotta get my MCAT score and I will be set!

Is anyone using a specific source to educate themselves about the ACA? I'd like to be able to talk more intelligently about its impact to adcomms besides the basic understanding I have.
I felt the same way after reading a couple threads on interview questions. I found this great book online at Amazon: "Introduction to US Health Policy" by Donald A. Barr, MD, PhD. It received wonderful reviews on Amazon for being comprehensive without being boring. I'm not too far into it yet. It is definitely "text-booky" but it's pretty darn good.

I will certainly check this out. Thank you! Right now I'm sitting here with 0 ii's so I'm finding it hard to get any motivation to do anything about interviews I don't have yet. Hopefully I can find some work and keep my mind busy for the next few months.

The three schools that I have interviews for are all programs I really like: Western Pomona, AZCOM, ATSU-SOMA. I can't say for sure what my chances are. My numbers are strong for DO due to grade replacement.

Right, what I meant to ask was: How do you feel about DO acceptance as opposed to MD acceptance?

Or do you not give a crap, and just wants to get into a med school, and then let your residency/fellowships speak for itself down the road?

Congrats by the way.

I have 5 DO interviews so far.

My AMCAS was finally verified and started getting in my MD secondaries. I only applied to 5 state MD schools, so I'm hoping my 4.0 postbacc over 32 credits (all science) gives me a look.

Just adding myself to the mix..

I'm a 26 yo non-trad, collected 2 engineering degrees in 7 years (BSEE, MSBME), working in human research now.

3.8cGPA (undergrad) 3.6sGPA (undergrad), 4.0cGPA(graduate), 30 MCAT. At least 1 strong LOR, 2 others that should be decent.
Applied very broadly, but I really want to get out of my home state of KY. Not feeling very pumped about the stats, but I'm hoping my 3 year research experience and advanced engineering degree will help.

Any words of encouragement?

Interview #5: Albany
Rejection #1: BU

20/24 secondaries done. The ones I have left are going to be outside of the two week window, but I am resigned to that.

It doesn't help that my family doesn't understand why I applied to so many schools. They keep asking me 'isn't [number you have completed] enough? take a break!'

No interviews yet but I've only been complete two weeks at most so I'm not worried yet. But definitely antsy, lol.

First II of the season. The first really is a weight off my shoulders

Congrats! First II is the sweetest.
(I was also worrying that there was something terribly wrong with my app before I got my first II 🙂)
What school if you don't mind my asking?

That's EXACTLY what I have been worried about. My wife is having fun telling me I probably checked yes to any felonies lol.

TCOM. Transmitted 8/9.

Congrats and best of luck with the other schools you have applied to!

Meanwhile, I have reached the point where I feel very discouraged, if not outright demoralized from reading school-specific pre-allo threads 🙁

Chin up! It's still very early in the cycle. It's the same superstars who get invite after invite from all the reach schools at this point. Schools will start looking at apps from us mere mortals in due time.

Don't worry the time will come 🙂 I know it's hard reading about all the people who have already interviewed and we're still waiting for just an invite. SDN standards are not quite reality. We still have plenty of time (but that doesn't stop me from checking emails every hour 😉)

Thanks guys. I guess the consolation for us mere mortals is, the stars can't matriculate to all the schools from which they get IIs and even acceptances 😛

Yeah, I got my one interview from UK and haven't heard anything from the other 21 schools I've applied to. I'm prrrooobbbably going to stop reading the school specific pre-allo forums from here on out. They're demoralizing...even though I know that's irrational of me.

It's also hard to check 22 different school accounts to view my application status. I can't keep track. Maybe I should get better organized.

First rejection received via the mail yesterday, from a DO school.

One interview at a DO school scheduled for October.

No others on the horizon. Maybe time to add more schools.

Do Something,

Just checked out your MDApps profile. My hat goes off to you with much respect.

Best of luck this app cycle.

All I can say as being a fellow non-trad is.....apply VERY widely!!

Still waiting for verification. AACOMAS looks like it's a week out. AMCAS, on the other hand, looks like they'll get to me near the end of September.

Ugh. At least it'll give me time to secure a job and do some activities before the interviews start.

Wow, thanks a lot. 🙂 Best of luck to you too. Best of luck to everyone!

I always like perusing through the non-trad forum because everyone is more civilized, supportive and mature than a lot of the other forums. I am really impressed with everyone who have kids and a full time job, I can't imagine trying to study and be a family member. I can barely remember what I ate for breakfast this morning....

This is my first application cycle to 18 allopathic schools. I am currently 26. I went to UW-Madison for undergrad and received a 3.3 with three majors. (I was stupid to take so many courses....) I then married my wife and we both went into the Army. I spent three years as an Infantry Officer and then became a helicopter pilot for some more adventure.

I did two semesters of research at Madison along with being in ROTC, becoming an RA for two years, volunteering and serving in the Guard. I also was lucky enough to serve in a combat support hospital as an officer. I am hoping all of this balances out the low GPA. I am still waiting on my MCAT scores. It is like a really horrible version of waiting for Christmas...

Best of luck to everyone!

Hey fellow pilot,

Don't underestimate the uniqueness of your background. It'll definitely make them remember your app. Being military (especially as an officer) obviously shows you have the maturity to be a doctor!!

Good luck this cycle! Hoorah!!

Interview invite for TCMC, and small pool for MCW! Actually starting to believe that I have a shot at getting in somewhere...

I'll update here, since i pulled my mdapps.

interviewed at buffalo and Minneapolis last week. absolutely fell in love with the twin cities even though I'm oos.

upcoming interviews are Ohio State in September, then Toledo and Pittsburgh in October. got the invite for pitt while at buffalo, so i did a little celebratory dance between interviews. it was weird, but satisfying.

didn't mention it anywhere else but I'm a pilot too. good to see fliers here!

Why'd you pull your mdapps? Good luck with your next few interviews. I'm at Buffalo now for my first interview tomorrow. Excited!

i heard rumors certain adcoms were perusing mdapps before and after interviews. i didn't believe it, or thought I'd have anonymity, but I've sort of realised i shouldn't chance it, especially if I'm recording my opinions on each school.

no problem. good luck at buffalo. they're friendly there. you'll impress rosso if you know your alzheimers pathology and historical info on the McKinley assassination.

Good to know. I know what I'll be reading up on tonight. 🙂

I had my first interview this Friday and I think non-trads stand out a lot - and in a very good way!

Good to hear that your interview was a positive experience!

I just received my MCAT scores back...

28 (11P/07V/10B)

I don't even know what to say. I don't know if I should just retake it with the goal of raising my verbal or try applying with this score. Darn it.

Just got my EDP invite 🙂 Good luck everyone!

probably too late for a retake, I think I'd just apply with that score and see how it goes. just my $0.02

no expert, but you might get a lot of love as a vet, regardless of that verbal score. just apply broadly and to do schools too.

How long it took for you stretching out to write 19? My goodness 😱

I know... I am on #10, It has taken me about a month! I cant imagine 19! But I did apply to 18 schools. One rejection already pre-secondary.

I read an MDApps yesterday of an applicant that completed secondaries for 53 schools. Can you imagine?

Nope.

My final count is 24 applications, with 23 secondaries completed (c'mon, Vanderbilt! send me one!). That was bad enough.

At 53, though, I have to think many are a waste of time....probably that person has either a)too many reach schools or b)too many schools that don't take OOS students, no?

I agree with this. Sometimes people understand "apply broadly" as "apply to every school whose 10-90 percentiles include your stats", but it's not quite like that. Like you said, there are state schools for which you need higher stats as an OOS. Plus, there are some mission-specific schools, and if you don't fit their mission, applying there is a waste of money and effort. Finally, just like you said, some people apply to too many reaches. I mean, does it make sense to apply to 10 or 15 top-20 schools with, like, an under 3.5 GPA and a MCAT of less than 34? Some people say: "But I have good ECs and I'm an all around awesome applicant, if it were not for my stats" - guess what? People who are competitive for top schools have high stats *and* awesome ECs.
Plus, I seriously doubt the quality of all the 53 applications. Everybody starts burning out at some point. I started burning out at about 15 applications, completed 17 and still have 4-7 to go.

If I sound a little bitter, that's because I am  I haven't heard anything for 20 days since I got my last interview (and I'm only going to 2 interviews so far, though to schools I'm very excited about), and it's really discouraging seeing people getting so many IIs while I'm just sitting there waiting. What's wrong with my application? I have good enough stats (3.96/4.0/38), and ECs (lots of published and presented medical research, clinical volunteering, serious leadership, teaching, mentoring etc, some hobbies), at least 3 of my 4 LORs are as strong as they can be and I have kind of an interesting personal story. Come on, where's the love? 🙁

The love is coming! it must be.

I could have written this post too, albeit with slightly lower stats (although still respectable for top schools). First II yesterday and that took a major load off, but still....it's hard to see everyone else getting interviews. But this game is about patience. We waited this long, we can wait a little longer....
