2014 Nontrad Applicants' Progress Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wow! Woke up this morning to such an overwhelming show of support from this thread! Thank you to Candace1633, docelh, arainyday, and rorte. I can't tell you how much I really needed to hear from ya'll right now. Thank you for giving me another perspective to look at this from and giving me some hope that I have definitely been lacking. Seriously, a thank you doesn't feel like enough for how much gratitude I'm feeling.

Ya'll are right. Lets do this 🙂

Honestly, a lot of threads on this website have given me hope and confidence again, something I had lost when I was dismissed from dental school. I am glad to give my two cents and provide encouragement because so many of y'all have done the same for me! Let's keep it up!

Hello all,
Seeing people tell there stories gives me hope as well. I am a 33 year old, married,no kids, and is the only one working in the home. I am currently a Medical Lab Technologist. I have always like what I do, even though I feel unappreciated at times, but In the last couple of years I have been searching for something else off and on. When obstacles came, I would say to myself that I might has well just stay were I am.

Well recently, I have been trying deciding on Biotechnology or medical school. Medical school has been my first choice for many years. Today,I feel that if I dont at least try and shoot for MD or DO then I think this would be the biggest regret of my life. Today, I am willing to do what I have to do to make it come true, no matter the sacrifices.

My GPA is 2.75. I am hoping to get accepted to Post-bacc at USC-Columbia or VCOM in Spartenburg South Carolina. I dont have any recent volunteer work (expect for the habitat for humanity I did in College) or ECs. I would love to get into Pathology but am willing to explore the others areas as well.

Good Luck Everyone and God Bless!

On the other hand, I did Engineering and keep telling myself "Why didn't I do Art History and get those straight A's? Now i have to scramble to make up a decent GPA ><

😀

lol or a biology major!

in all seriousness though, I'm glad i did engineering because it suited me at the time. i think having done it will make me a better doctor.

Same here! I feel like adcoms should consider the difficulty of major when looking at GPA. And although I myself went to a state school, they should also consider the undergraduate institution. A 3.0 in engineering from Georgia Tech is just as good, if not better than a 4.0 in English from XX state school. No?

On the one hand, I'm totally psyched I got IIs from Case and CCLCM last night, I'm just extremely happy! :soexcited: I was very anxious about getting IIs from them.

On the other hand, today one of my co-workers got unhappy that I had to schedule 2 and half days off (up to a total of 6.5 days I'm taking for my interviews so far). Never mind that in the past 18 months I took a total of 3 days off (so I have a balance of 15 vacation days), and never mind that I often come earlier and leave substantially later than anybody else here (including the said co-worker). And I'm scheduling my interviews on the days that I'm not even needed in the lab!
I was so happy this morning, and now I'm kind of down 🙁 Thankfully, most of my colleagues are supportive, he seems to be the only one unhappy about my trips.

A lot of people look at me as if I have two heads when I tell them that I picked physics as major to keep my GPA up. I did think about taking English or some else in humanities but writing essays is one of the top repulsive activities that I had to undertake during college. Just saying, getting straight As in the so called "easy" majors may not be as easy as it seems and some of the "hard" ones can be very simple and straight forward.

Congratulations on the IIs! 👍 I would not worry about your co-worker at all. Your goal is getting in medical schools and the IIs are important step getting you closer. What someone at work things about that is their own issue.

A coworker, not your boss? pffft. Let him be unhappy. Congrats on the interview!

I picked up my fourth invite today and am sooo happy, although also apprehensive about scheduling the time off.

despite all the love I'm getting from other schools, i got rejected from my top choice today. kind of bummed out, trying to put it into perspective, but it's hard when I've been targeting it since the first days of my postbac.

it's a wild ride.

Sucks but there will be a silver lining to that. Did you interview with them? With the amount of IIs that you got you will manage to get in somewhere.👍

no it was pre-interview. that's what I'm hoping. thanks milski

it's been mostly radio silence for me but i did get some rejections and most were at schools i had no business applying to. only one rejection i received so far actually hurt so i feel ya brotha!

After 4 ii's in 6 days I haven't heard a peep. I'm really hoping the remaining 4 I haven't heard from just haven't gotten to me yet but I'm fairly certain I've just been passed over by a few of them. They were reaches though so I can't say im hurt or surprised. Now I'm going to transition to interview mode so I can rock what I do have.

Haha I've got an even weirder one. I majored in history of science, history of medicine at Yale. I graduated with a 2.7ish maybe. Then took post bac classes at a branch Texas A&M school...brought that up to maybe a 3.0. And that got me into one of the highest ranked dental schools in the US. The only reason I left was because I realized everything I liked about dental was the medical aspect, and hated all the handwork (i.e the dentistry)

Point being, many schools look at non trads differently and like to have people that aren't your cookie cutter Bio major who only knows how to do science. Not saying every one of us will get in (although we should 😉 but keep the faith! You have a better shot than you think!

Hooray! I found you guys! Total noob here and I was really under the impression that my "non-trad" thing was at best a "mehhhh", but I feel inspired by you guys of late. Bout to be 32 yrs and married, no kids. I dropped out my third year of school with 3.15 - one F in there for good measure (2004) from southern state school. No direction in my life, and left U.S. for global health aid, joined the Navy, and came back with a pitbull attitude. Overall still not so hot ~3.45. Only had one Dr. for my LOR's, mostly military and professors I met for my first semester out of military, but I just got my FIRST INTERVIEW INVITE! I'm in shock. I didn't think it would come so soon, and no other schools have sent me a whiff, but I'm still pumped!

Still nothing, even from schools where I have a good shot, so I'm assuming that I get to start this stuff all over next year. Sigh. I can probably get a better MCAT though and might be able to boost my GPA with a few courses.

It is way, way, WAY too early for you to start thinking you're going to need to apply next year. Really. SDN provides a very skewed view of things, even in this side of the forums. It is still super early in the cycle.

I think around November is when you need to really start considering the prospect of reapplying, if you still have no interviews at that point.

I'm going by end of year, but have been told even longer like Feb. by some adcom students.

Yeah, I think that's very fair in that you definitely still have a chance, but thinking about the pieces you need to have in place if you are making another run at things (registering again for the MCAT, choosing some new classes, maybe starting to look for jobs) you probably don't want to leave it until Feb to consider your plans.

But seriously, it's so early! sooooo early.

I'm already registered for two classes and haven't quit my job. Volunteering will continue and maybe I'll try to do some more shadowing? We'll see.

I completely agree with this! It depends on what you're good at.
Congratulations on the IIs! 👍 I would not worry about your co-worker at all. Your goal is getting in medical schools and the IIs are important step getting you closer. What someone at work things about that is their own issue.
Thanks. I do appreciate my job, but I feel like I will rather quit my job and spend whatever little savings I have to go to these interviews than stay employed and not be able to attend the interviews. The interviews didn't come easy, and I'm certainly not passing up on them! But I really hope it will not come to that
A coworker, not your boss? pffft. Let him be unhappy. Congrats on the interview!
Yep, a coworker. My biggest boss is the only MD in the unit, so she understands me better than anybody. But the said coworker can sure make a big fuss 😀
I picked up my fourth invite today and am sooo happy, although also apprehensive about scheduling the time off.
Congrats! I'm at 4 IIs as well, and, as you can see, I fully understand your feelings about scheduling time off.
Acceptance to any of these 4 schools is, of course, by no means guaranteed, so I will try to go to as many interviews as I can if I get any more IIs, I may just schedule them later in the cycle and space them more. I'm incredibly lucky that these 4 schools are my top favorites, I would be deliriously happy to attend any one of them (though I do prefer one over others 😉), so I was anxious to schedule these interviews ASAP.

This sucks 🙁 And I guess it teaches us not to have our hearts set on particular schools, but I still can't help but have a favorite 🙂
On the other hand, from what I've gathered from reading SDN and MDapps, it's not that rare that people change their opinions about schools, coming into an application with certain favorites and changing their minds as the cycle goes.
In any case, I wish you to get into a school you will be happy at! From what I remember 😉, you have a great app, you will get into some nice schools.
Got two rejections. One today, one last week.
🙁 My first communication from any medical school, besides any secondary-related communications, was a rejection, which was quite discouraging. But pretty soon after that my first II arrived 🙂
It has been said multiple times that it's still early in the cycle, so assuming you applied to more than 2 schools you're still on!

I had a 4 week "radio silence" after my first 2 IIs and I was sure I got passed over by several schools, including my top choice, - until I got 2 IIs, including the top choice school. I guess the conclusion is, this process is so complex and unpredictable, you just never know. Many people on SND say that it's not over till it's over, and it seems to be true.
Point being, many schools look at non trads differently and like to have people that aren't your cookie cutter Bio major who only knows how to do science.
Hey, don't offend Bio majors! - or any other science major for that matter. People can have diverse interests, talents and experiences no matter what their major is. Assuming a "cookie cutter" Bio major only knows how to do science is as offensive as assuming that people who did not major in science have no scientific aptitude.
I just got my FIRST INTERVIEW INVITE! I'm in shock. I didn't think it would come so soon, and no other schools have sent me a whiff, but I'm still pumped!
Awesome, congrats! Med schools do appreciate military experience, some more than others.

I'm joining the choir saying it's way too early in the cycle to think you won't succeed in it. Personally, I would start planning my next application cycle if I didn't get any IIs by the end of the year. Let's hope this will not be the case with you, but in the worst case scenario I would register and start preparing for a MCAT retake in January.

It's way too early to quit your job - I mean, you don't have to give your boss an 11 months notice, do you? 🙂
As for classes, it makes sense to keep taking them during the application cycle in case you want to send an update to a school. (By this, of course, I don't mean that people who are done taking classes have to start taking them again.)

Wasn't trying to insult Bio majors. In actuality, science majors have a much easier time adjusting to the intense course load and sheer amount of science that you have to learn. The first two years of dental and medical are pretty similar, and as a history major, I suffered for a little bit before I learned how to tackle the information. Again, wasn't trying to offend anyone. Just trying to boost the morale of those of us that weren't science majors and feel behind. 🙂

OK, I understand you 🙂 And I can see how hard it may be for non-science majors to adjust to the heavy science course load at medical or dental (though I know absolutely nothing about dental) schools - and I applaud you guys for enduring that, seriously, because med school ain't easy even for science majors.

That moment you realize there are still three minor typos in your personal statement despite having it edited by four different people and reviewing it myself twice before submitting my primary. I guess the schools that gave me interviews didn't notice/don't care.

Five interviews already?! Wow that's awesome! How quickly did you receive the rejection from the time you submitted the secondary? Good luck! Sounds like you're doing pretty excellent!

Pro Tip: After submitting your app, never read your PS again.
Sounds like a good advice in principle, but shouldn't we re-read our applications before interviews? It seems like some of the interviews may focus on your PS.
Having said that, obsessing over typos and error you made in your PS (or anywhere in your application, unless it's something egregious) is certainly not helping anyone.

HERE WE GO NON-TRADS!
I am a 28 going on 29 year-old married father of one!
Applying for again after 6 years, a marriage, a child, a crazy semi-versus-car accident resulting in a spinal fracture and rehab, adding several thousand hours of clinical and lab experience, and a successful retaking of the MCAT (July 26)!

AMCAS application is still "waiting for review" so I am still waiting for secondary apps. Will update as I hear back!

I'm AMCAS verified, but waiting for MCAT results. Just took it Saturday and I'm glad it's over. Not as glad as my husband, though, who said to other MCAT takers at the testing center, "I bet your families are all glad this MCAT thing is over too." [He's a funny guy and is fully supportive just tired of my compulsive obsession with the MCAT.]

Went over the GPA after verification. Who knew AAMC wouldn't count pharmacology as a science? I'm not complaining since my grad school degree now has a 4.0 science GPA. 🙂

Is that your little one in your photo? So cute!!

I'm 25 and have a partner and kiddo. I'm getting ready to start a two month stretch with interviews all over the place. I have to fly for most of them so kiddo will be getting a lot of airport knickknacks to make up for all the time away from mom.

Woot Nontrads!

🙂

To those with interviews, Congratulations! You have gone very far in the process, don't stop giving your 100%. It is now a very small step before medical school!
To those waiting every night and every morning front of their computers, do not give up! Remember, the party won't start without you!

Good luck, applicants
👍

When I started this process last year (5 years post undergrad) I spent some time bemoaning the kids who got to spend thousands on MCAT prep courses and summers on mission trips. Then I got serious. I read the materials MCAT provided on the subject matter, bought textbooks on amazon for a penny each, and studied my butt off while I worked full time to pay my mortgage and full time tuition at the community college. I just finished my second interview today and it was amazing! Identify your strengths and emphasize them. Identify your weaknesses and improve them. Make it happen!

had an awesome interview yesterday and picked up invitations for a couple more. kind of hoping i don't get fired for missing so much work these next few weeks...

I'm taking a temporary pay cut and reduction in hours to cover the time because I do not have enough leave. Maybe ask if that's an option?

I am applying to DO schools only. I am a little worried that I am too late in the cycle. My primary is processing. I take the MCAT on Wednesday. I have not been able to get above a 27 on the AAMC practice MCATs.

Any thoughts on my chances?🙂

Awesome story! I don't know enough about DO cycles to know if you are too late, but I wish you good luck!

Got a job interview for an urgent care center today. They said they're fine with me taking random days for school interviews, etc. Yay! Not the best job, but it's something...

Man, you're on a roll! Congrats! And yeah, I understand your feelings about missing work even though I have much fewer IIs than you do 🙂

Meanwhile, although I understand that an interview by no means guarantees an acceptance, once I got IIs from my top choices, I kind of relaxed: I don't worry about the schools I haven't heard from yet and don't compare myself to people who got 3-4 times as many IIs as I did anymore. Apparently, all it took for me is some love from my first choice 🙂 Now I better not screw up those interviews...

Early interview coming up in just 6 days.... psyched.

Well, I was re-reading it prior to an interview so I wouldn't have a deer-in-headlights look if they asked anything about it. I hadn't looked at it since submitting the primary in June.

Thought I would introduce myself. I'm a 45 y.o. married mother of two and grandmother of two. I have a BS in Psychology (3.98), MS in Psychology (3.81) and I am currently working on a Masters in Chemistry (definitely lower GPA in this program--3.4) but it is a full-time research degree in medicinal/organic synthesis. Hardest thing I have ever done.

I have taught Psychology full-time at a college for seven years. I now continue to teach two online courses with the same college every semester while teaching 2-3 organic labs as a TA.

I am applying to DO schools only. I am a little worried that I am too late in the cycle. My primary is processing. I take the MCAT on Wednesday. I have not been able to get above a 27 on the AAMC practice MCATs.

Numbers-wise, assuming you get a 27ish on the MCAT you'll do fine with DO schools. The thing I don't see in there is clinical experience. You need to put in some major time volunteering at a local hospital and getting patient contact experiences, as well as shadowing and getting to know some DOs since quite a few schools require an LOR from a DO.

Awesome story! I don't know enough about DO cycles to know if you are too late, but I wish you good luck!

Thank you for the encouragement. I get really nervous when I read all the outstanding qualifications. I just need one school to like me.

That is him! Good luck in your interviews!!!

Ahhhhh I don't know if this counts as 'progress' but my phone just died.

Now I have to pray I get out of work early enough tomorrow to go buy a new one.

At least I was due for an upgrade anyway but man, talk about hassles I did *not* need right now with work and class and interviews all crashing towards me.
