2015-16 PM&R Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
At the very least, yes, Mayo residency fulfills the preceptorship part. I would argue the bigger advantage is I highly doubt Mayo EMGs consist of mostly carpal tunnel syndrome studies--you will probably see a lot of pathology at Mayo you won't see elsewhere. The 200+ EMGs required during PM&R residency doesn't necessarily mean that residents will actually be that well trained in EMG. Up until recently, those 200 EMGs could be mostly observed EMGs--now we're required to perform at least 150 of the 200 EMGs we participate in. In addition, at some programs you may be only doing part of the study (there may be a few residents working together, one doing NCS, the other EMG, for example), so one study at one program doesn't mean as much experience as a study at another program. And as I mentioned, if the majority of your 200 studies are "r/o CTS" then you're missing out on a lot of learning. I imagine Mayo is getting a lot more odd stuff not as commonly (if ever) seen elsewhere. Add in the unique classroom education portion of the EMG course, and I think that's the real advantage that Mayo offers.

However, I'm not sure if residents from all other programs will need to do a fellowship. Two of our recent grads are trying to get their 200+ independent EMGs done right now so they can sit for EMG boards. We only have 4 months of dedicated EMG rotation. With our dedicated EMG lectures and case studies added in (which are separate from those 4 months), it's possible that adds up to 6 months total, though I'm really not sure. (Apparently reading counts too per the website--I don't know how that gets tracked...) I didn't know about the preceptorship part until today, so I never asked the recent grads that are trying to get EMG boarded whether our program fulfills that requirement (I guess it would if they used elective time to do more EMGs).

If those 6 months have to be continuous (which isn't clear on the website), then I think you're right that any non-Mayo grad would need to do a fellowship. Hopefully my colleagues looked into that...

Maybe the requirements aren't as black and white as the website makes out. I have been told that Mayo structured its curriculum to give that 6-month block for the very purpose of allowing their students to be EMG board eligible. It's hard to believe that it is a coincidence. However, I was also told that residents have left the program board eligible which by the letter of the law is not possible. So either the rules aren't black or white, or lots of people have unrealistic expectations about becoming EMG board eligible.

Agreed, but if you're having techs do the nerve conduction studies and just doing the needling/motor unit analysis, I think you're missing out on the opportunity for a lot of educational value. In my mind, the 200 NCS/EMG number is in place so that you are familiar enough with the bread and butter cases that will come in (CTS, ulnar neuropathy, peripheral neuropathy, radics). Exposure to more complex presentations is important to recognize (and would be a great asset during residency training), but shouldn't substitute for the basics.

But is that the truth regarding Mayos NCS exposure, or just hearsay at this point. I have a tough time imagining that the program widely regarded as the strongest outpatient PM&R program would have residents incompetent in NCS.

It's certainly possible--I'd ask recent Mayo grads and current faculty. It's possible things aren't as black and white as they are on the website. However, Electromyographers are really, really particular when it comes to definitions.

I also have a hard time believing that Mayo residents (or residents anywhere) won't be doing the NCS portion of a study. Often, typical practice is for the physiatrist to repeat abnormal conduction studies when using a tech, so it'd be hard to imagine you won't be doing most/all the NCS studies yourself. It's possible that the techs are only used when a resident isn't involved.

Anyone know if USF normally has a dinner the night before and what the details are for it? Haven't been able to get an answer from them on this

Random question: do you guys think it would reflect badly on an applicant if he/she expresses interest at the end of the interviews by saying, "I love your program, and I could see myself being very happy here/I would love to come here" if the applicant genuinely does think so? I feel like I've loved every single program I've interviewed at so far, so I just don't want PDs to talk and get the wrong idea that I may be insincere for any reason by saying, "Hey! That applicant said the same thing at my program." Any feedback?

Pretty sure that PDs get over 200 of these each year. In all likelihood they won't help and won't hurt you. I sent hand written notes to all of the PDs anyway...primarily thanking them for the opportunity and graciousness of the staff/residents during my visit.

I also sent an email to Mayo's PD that I was ranking his program #1 sometime before rankings were due. Did it help or hurt me? Probably not...he didn't respond to me until I matched to his program. I'm a pretty forward guy...so when I was asked, "Why Mayo on my interview" by staff members?...I responded in saying that "I had your program ranked at the top beginning of the process, cancelled another invite I was interested in, and flew down on short notice because..._____." I made it explicitly clear on my interview that Mayo is where I wanted to be.

Yes they do an informal dinner but it is arranged by the residents and I was emailed the day before.

Think it's acceptable to email one of the chief residents if I don't hear from anyone in the next couple of hours? I'm flying in today and interview tomorrow and haven't gotten any word on the plan. The PC already CCd them on the email last week asking though so now I just feel like it'd be annoying them.

I would definitely email the Chiefs.

Anyone have any recommendations for a hotel for the U of Arkansas interview? Preferably, one with a shuttle.

Possibly waitlisted at Sinai. Letter said there are no more interview spots but I could possibly be contacted if their are cancellations.

Considering Sinai's situation last year...I'm willing to bet they didn't invite enough applicants and didn't take anyone off of their waitlist.

I would take their "waitlist" as an informal rejection. However, if you really want to live in a hell hole like Baltimore...then I would email the PC expressing interest in their program asking for a space-A interview if one becomes available.

Just wondering - what was Sinai's situation last year?

Just wondering - what was Sinai's situation last year?

Nothing to know other than they didn't rank enough applicants. No red flags other than being in Baltimore, in midst of race riots last year. Every program filled last year...the scramble is not a strategy.

You're in a time crunch...but if PM&R is what you want to do...you better work your butt off over the next week to make it happen.

TODAY: Ask your PM&R attending if they would be willing to write you a STRONG letter of recommendation, and if they would be able to have it ready by early next week. A LOR a month or two from now doesn't help you. I have written dozen of LORs over the past few years...and most letter writers are busy and will NOT prioritize your letter unless you give a timeline. You absolutely need to let the letter writer know that the letter needs to be submitted by early next week.

BY THE END OF THE WEEKEND: Has a strong personal statement, which has been critiqued and edited by at least two objective medical professionals. Ideally you would get let these two people know about your situation, so they understand the necessity of getting it reviewed and back to you by the end of tomorrow. Work your butt off to get the backbones done tonight so that you can have the first draft finished by mid-day tomorrow. By Sunday hopefully you have your critiques back and can make the final edits with anticipation of submitting it MONDAY.

MONDAY: Apply broadly. If a program has issued rejections...email the PC after applying and notify that you have recently discovered PM&R and just applied. This will get you on their radar.
You have good scores...and if you would have applied at the beginning of the cycle with a LOR/PS...you would likely have been a good position to match. We are now approaching the half-way point of the season...so you are going to have to be a little bit more creative. Asking for interview spots if cancellations occur may be a decent strategy. Most people who match into PM&R match within their top 3 ranked programs. You need to try your best to get at least 3 invites....ideally over 5. I think that it could happen, but you are going to have to work your butt off and spend some money in order to make it happen.

@Program Coordinator PM&R any advice?

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my question, this was a great reply!

As long as you don't act like your entitled and a jerk...it's not a rude question at all.

2nd batch of invites from EVMS? Not sure when - it just said to call/email PC to set up a date. Does anyone know anything about this program? (reputation, strengths/weaknesses, etc.)?

I have interview at university of Rochester in 12/11, but I need to change the date. Can anyone switch with me? Thanks!!!!

Just got a rejection from Thomas Jefferson. Their email also said they have finished reviewing all the applications so if you haven't been contacted now might be a good idea to follow up.

Has anybody who is interviewing with USF 11/9, or who has interviewed already, know any of the details for the pre-interview dinner?

Anybody have any advise on interpreting follow-up emails after interviews. I've gotten some after both prelim and PM&R interviews that kind of say "we thought you were a strong applicant, we were very impressed with your interview, etc etc". I can't tell if they are generic and everyone gets them or if its a good sign that I should feel comfortable ranking that program high.

It's not encouraging that they are speaking in past tense. If it's a vague letter that doesn't imply you are rejected it's likely a "be patient" email. If you are strongly interested in any of the programs that aren't overtly rejecting you...tell them that you remain very interested and would be willing to travel on short notice to attend if given the opportunity.

I would take it as a good sign, as I'm sure most programs don't take the time to email every interviewee.

Anyone have suggestions as to what to do if we're on waitlists? I know they said they would reach out to us if openings arise, but I have a feeling they don't check it that closely. Should I call a few weeks ahead of time to check?

Anyone know if Cleveland Clinic has a dinner the night before? I thought they did but now I don't see it anywhere in the email.

Kind of out of the loop, but when did Cleveland Clinic start a PM&R residency?

How is it?

No dinner before. The hotel is really nice and there are some food options at the hotel or at the hospital next door. I hope you get a better vibe than I got when I was there...

Does anyone know if NRH MedStar has a program coordinator? The only point of contact I see is Dr. Whitehair (PD) with the [email protected] email. Just wanna make sure im not missing something...
