Only 4 pmr interviews + 1 prelim. Time to panic yet?

Only 4 pmr interviews + 1 prelim. Time to panic yet?

I'd say...based on the wisdom and experience of others + heavily lurking on the PM&R threads for the past couple of years...no. The trend seems to be for many of programs to continue offering interviews well into November, and even through December and sometimes (albeit rarely), January. Of course, all of this is contingent upon how many programs you applied to, how broadly you applied, and how early you applied. But assuming you applied to a good number of programs (>40) and didn't limit yourself geographically, it's probably safe to say that if you hang tight you'll be offered at least a few more interviews (am I right on this, @j4pac? Correct me if I'm wrong).

Ideally you'll want to interview at/rank ~10 programs if you're an MD and ~12 programs if you're a DO to hit roughly a 90% chance of matching (into the field, period), however many have argued (and rightfully so) that we can't really emphasize quantity over quality. Yes, the facts and figures speak from themselves (I'm assuming you've looked at trends in match data from the past couple of years), but at the same time, there are people who match and rank <10 programs. Just be prepared to blow people away at whatever interviews you do attend. I have classmates from prior years who have matched into PM&R with <10 interviews--they were strong candidates, but by no means absolutely stellar.

As far as prelims go...I don't know. I'm a DO and will probably have no problems securing a TRI, but I hear prelims and TYs are super competitive. It may be wise to submit another batch of apps to prelim programs to prevent having to scramble in the spring...although I am no expert on this--perhaps an allopathic student can chime in on this issue.

Good luck, and stay sane!

You're right. The half way mark is typically early November. I'm willing to bet he/she finishes with 9-12 invites. Assuming he/she interviews well...he/she has a good chance of matching.

Ideally you'll want to interview at/rank ~10 programs if you're an MD and ~12 programs if you're a DO to hit roughly a 90% chance of matching (into the field, period), however many have argued (and rightfully so) that we can't really emphasize quantity over quality.

That is correct...going by the NRMP stats. The stats don't always tell the whole story though. For example...there is this expectation that you have to have ten ranked programs to match. The majority of people who match match inside of their top 3. I matched at my #1...so in hindsight I could only ranked one program and matched. So did people match because they ranked 10-12 programs? The majority would have matched with far fewer.

The number of ranked programs doesn't matter if every program ranks you lowly. The benefit of going on lots of interviews is 1) it helps you figure out what you are looking for, and 2) it theoretically gives you more chances to be ranked highly by at least one program. You should enter every interview like it's your only interview. You should know everything on paper that there is to know about the program. You should know the PDs background. Know what type of research is being conducted. Have questions locked and loaded.

The number of interview invites you get is really an indication of how competitive you are. It is not so much that you need 10-12 to match, but more like if you get 10-12 interviews, you are good enough to get a position. However, most people don't drop down to 11 or 12.

Also rejected from Kentucky today and Wash U is full on interview dates on inquiry.

For those that got an RIC invite, are you calling every five minutes to schedule the interview if you get sent to voicemail or are you leaving a voicemail with the dates you prefer and hoping for a callback. Doesn't seem professional to me to call until you get through, but this morning I got a generic rejection email from RIC. So now I'm confused. Any tips from the upper classmen? Rejection email says the typical we had many applicants but unfortunately aren't able to interview you this cycle. Best of luck with the future. Kind of as if this is a generic email they use to reject everyone. Versus sending to someone after sending them an invite first, then withdrawing the invite.

I called within 5 mins of getting the email yesterday. And left a voicemail. Called to check again 4 hours after I finished work and it was a voicemail again but I didn't leave a second one.

Hey, that's super ****ty. It seems like someone messed up. I'd continue to try calling the PC, and when you get a hold of her, explain the situation and see if you can be provided with some clarification. Obviously, if you were invited for an interview, this isn't one to miss! Good luck--I'll be praying for you!

Some more thoughts:

1) I completely agree with j4pac, most poeple will match in their top 3. So you really don't need to interview at 10+ programs but there is tremendous utility to doing so (learning about what is out there, finding your fit...etc). I personally interviewed at 11 because a) they were mostly competitive b) I'm rather risk averse. As for prelims, take them seriously. Yes most get their #1, but I know several who got stuck scrambling. So interview to enough! What is enough? Whatever makes you comfortable. For me that was 4-5 programs.

2) I would argue that invites are not really random. Some people will get invites based on scores/AOA/SSP/GHHS and others because there was somthing interesting about their application even if scores weren't that great (I guess the ladder can account for a random feel to the process).
Remember that programs want to fill too! So they can't just skim the top scores and best applicants!!!! They have to interview at a distribution. Thus not everyone who has equivalent scores or grades gets interviews at the same places.
3) Like programs, med students should apply to and interview at a distribution (I hope this was discussed previously, and it if was sorry for the repeat). You want to get a great spot, but need to ensure you match. So even if the program is not top 20 or 30, if you see yourself living there and being happy, go for it. Plus when it comes to rank lists, there is a false sense of "I need to be in my top 3." The process lets you shoot for the starts without penalty, who cares if you matched your 5th spot as as long as you like it there. At least you can say you tried for your top ones and aren't left wondering "what if."

4) (Most important at this stage in the year). Make yourself available to interview last minute! As the season goes on all programs get cancellations for one reason or antoher (even the top 10 programs get cancellations). I probably cancelled on 4-5 when I interviewed, and went to 1-2 after others cancelled (I assume this by late invite). Take advantage of them if you're financial situation allows.

Sounds like they sent more invites than interview spots.
I can tell you we have a very methodical process of filling our interview spots. Our program generally interviews between 80 and 96 applicants. We start with our earliest dates and try and fill out from there. If a candidate is unable to make the first group of dates we offer, we will then extend out to our later dates. We definitely do not over invite people, although I'm sure other programs might.

I got rejected from RIC three times last year. They definitely have issues with their automated system.

I would call the PC and leave a voicemail explaining the situation and need for clarification. I would also send an email to the PC doing the same. Only leave one voicemail and email. Then I would call to the office bright and early each morning trying to reach the PC (but not leaving more than that initial voicemail). You don't want to come across as harassing, but it is completely reasonable to try to get some clarification.

Gosh, sorry to hear that, similar happened to me for Baylor Houston but was waitlisted not rejected; rejected sounds weird since the original invites were just sent yest...?
For RIC I e-mailed shortly after receiving it since on Sub-I. Then PC replied to call her. Called, no answer, didn't leave a msg. Called again 10 mins later around 1pm eastern time and got through. It sounded like dates were filling up pretty quickly though. Sorry once again.

They must really really hate you lol

Specifically...Dr. Sliwa hates me, as he was the one who signed all three of my rejection letters. I thought that we DOs should stick together...I guessed wrong. 🙂

anyone else still waiting for hopkins to reply?

anyone else still waiting for hopkins to reply?

They sent invitations for interviews on 10/2/15:
Johns Hopkins - Advanced 10/2 (11/1 (AM/PM Group) 11/14(AM/PM Group))
I emailed then called the PC to confirm my date and she did so after a couple of days. I'm not sure if they have sent out a second wave or rejections.

Would it be too late to apply if I decided to now? Probably have a completed app sometime next week. 600+ COMLEX, 235+/245+ USMLEs. Just finished up a 2 week PM&R elective and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Possible or nah?

Go to ERAS and look up the application deadlines for the program's you are interested in on each programs website. Some have already passed, others have not. You can look above and see what schools have wait lists and which have sent out invites. Only about a dozen programs haven't sent out yet.

PMR is competitive. I would think you need a really good personal statement and a good physiatrist rec letter to have a good chance to make the switch this late. But I'm sure it's happened before and worked out.

You're in a time crunch...but if PM&R is what you want to do...you better work your butt off over the next week to make it happen.

TODAY: Ask your PM&R attending if they would be willing to write you a STRONG letter of recommendation, and if they would be able to have it ready by early next week. A LOR a month or two from now doesn't help you. I have written dozen of LORs over the past few years...and most letter writers are busy and will NOT prioritize your letter unless you give a timeline. You absolutely need to let the letter writer know that the letter needs to be submitted by early next week.

BY THE END OF THE WEEKEND: Has a strong personal statement, which has been critiqued and edited by at least two objective medical professionals. Ideally you would get let these two people know about your situation, so they understand the necessity of getting it reviewed and back to you by the end of tomorrow. Work your butt off to get the backbones done tonight so that you can have the first draft finished by mid-day tomorrow. By Sunday hopefully you have your critiques back and can make the final edits with anticipation of submitting it MONDAY.

MONDAY: Apply broadly. If a program has issued rejections...email the PC after applying and notify that you have recently discovered PM&R and just applied. This will get you on their radar.
You have good scores...and if you would have applied at the beginning of the cycle with a LOR/PS...you would likely have been a good position to match. We are now approaching the half-way point of the season...so you are going to have to be a little bit more creative. Asking for interview spots if cancellations occur may be a decent strategy. Most people who match into PM&R match within their top 3 ranked programs. You need to try your best to get at least 3 invites....ideally over 5. I think that it could happen, but you are going to have to work your butt off and spend some money in order to make it happen.

@Program Coordinator PM&R any advice?

So I ended up booking two interviews on the same day...any advice for tactfully handling this? I am bummed too because both are places I am interested.

^ bummer. Personally, I would call the one you are less interested in, explain the situation, and try to get an alternate date. If no go, try the one. You could ask to be on an alternate list (if such a thing exists). I'd try to put off actually canceling one as long as possible in hopes that one program can you get in a different time. But that's just me, and it's just a theory. Good luck! Let us all know how u end up handling it and any advice for if you had to do it again.

This has happened to me. I ended up keeping the interview at the program I was more interested in, and emailed the PC at the other program (still, a program I'm interested in, albeit less so) explaining the situation honestly. She was very understanding. Not surprisingly, the other interview dates for that program are booked solid, but she agreed to put me on a cancellation list. It's not ideal, but it's better than nothing.

Edit: by saying I "explained the situation honestly", I don't mean I flat-out said that I had an offer to interview at a program I was more interested in...I tried to be more tactful, saying something like "I've encountered scheduling conflicts with that particular date" and was very polite, expressing my respect for her time/level of busy-ness and regret at having to ask for an alternative date.

Good luck!
