2015-2016 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What are people doing to save on cost of *ground* transportation? (e.g., getting to the site from your hotel). I'm trying to avoid renting a car as much as possible, and parking garage/lot fees.

(Is there some psych-interview-specific uber sitch? ;-p)

Thank y'all.

Hotel Shuttles and Uber! if your site is close enough to your hotel.

Side Question.

What do you do about sites that are not flexible with their interview dates and do not offer phone/video interviews? Let them know I have other interviews as well instead of saying schedule conflicts?

For the individuals that heard back from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, School of Medicine, can they specify the track? There is no general track but there are the Adult, Child/Adult, and Infant/Child Tracks.
My fault. I apologize. Adult Track.

i will send a message to update.

When I was interviewing, I wound up renting cars when I didn't know someone in the area who could give me a ride. It was actually much cheaper than I expected, and it gave me more flexibility in my scheduling because I knew I was in control of my own transportation. I was also able to save on air fare by renting cars. I had a few interviews in different parts of New England, so instead of flying to three different cities within a couple hours of each other, I just rented a car for a week and drove myself.

Avoiding renting a car at all costs. I'm a big fan of public transit. I've been doing it on the cheap - using buses, trains, metro. Of course, I've only been to large cities with pretty good transit systems so far. I might have to give in later in the cycle.

Don't feel terrible! I was just trying to help our fearless and dedicated coordinator out! 🙂

Definitely- it's a great idea and I'll direct any messages to her from now on 🙂.

If you are fortunate enough to interview in Chicago, New York, DC, or another large city with a subway-like form of transportation, then renting a car is typically unnecessary. However, IMO it is much easier when interviewing in any other city to rent a car than to rely on buses, if you have the means. Renting a car in most non-large metro areas (the places without rail public transport), can be as cheap as $15 or so a day. Use Priceline or other similar sites to rent the cars because you will get much better deals this way. APA members also can get discounts booking directly through Avis, I believe, but using Priceline is generally cheaper.

When you have not heard back past the posted "notification by" date, how long are people waiting to send a follow-up email? I know Greg on Match-News said we could email the next day, but I'm curious how long other people have been waiting. I've been waiting til noon the following day but this has happened with multiple sites. I don't want to be pushy if they are frantically trying to get notifications out, but I also don't want to have missed an invitation that might have had technical issues. Thoughts?

As cheesy as this is, thank you everyone for all the positivity and support you provide through this thread! I got my first interview today at UMBC, which is amazing, and I feel excited to finally join in the happiness with all of you! Continued good luck to everyone 🙂.

I think it is at least worth looking into how much a rental car is. I am renting a car for 2 days in Charleston for $32 (total). Sometimes it isn't as bad as you would expect.

If you absolutely can't rent a car, look for hotels that offer shuttle service. Look into public transit. Also, look into uber/lyft (particularly if you haven't used them before they have a free $25 for the first time).
If you happen to have a Costco membership, you can often get really good deals off of their website on rental cars. I was looking at renting one for a week and it was like $150 for an entire week.

Hey Everyone! Did anybody end up starting a thread for swapping interview dates? I know it is a long shot but I am in desperate need of someone to switch interview dates at UC Davis CAARE Center. I currently have an 1/21 afternoon interview but I need a morning or afternoon one on 1/22 instead! Any takers??

UMBC is great! I hope you like it!

Thank you! I hope people are checking this thread to help each other out!

I think if people start posting to it more that it will become more popular and stay on top ... so please post your date on there! I was going to do it for you but then decided it would be better if you post it yourself so folks can contact you directly.

For the people who just heard from McLean, was it for the adult track?

It was... however, I had a friend last year who was invited weeks after invites first started to roll out. They seem to release invites in batches that are linked to one specific interview date. Fingers crossed that you'll hear good news soon!

How is everyone preparing for interviews? Are there any old forum threads about previous interview experiences at specific sites? Thank you for any help and the incredible support you all provide on here!!

I'm at work trying to prep for an evaluation meeting but instead I'm getting distracted by making travel plans and imagining my life in Dallas....!!!

I know my school has set up this whole week mock interviews with various professors for us to practice questions that might be asked, give feedback, and work on being comfortable. I personally have been talking through answers to questions in the APAGS book with other peers and have made a binder with a separate section for each site with information about the people, the site, what they offer, etc. to help

I'm in the exact same place with Appalachian State. I'm guessing that we might be on a wait list…..or my other guess is that they haven't gotten to our apps because they are in a batch that hasn't been looked at yet. Or aliens came down and stole our applications to this site and used them for fire kindling- which I hear is in short supply up in the U-Verse.

Today is App State's notification day on their APPIC profile... maybe today is the day? 🙂

Still no word from University of Maryland College Park counseling center? Seems like they have sent out notices earlier than now in past years.

Right? If not, I will email them tomorrow. Just curious those of you still waiting to hear from App State, did you apply by the initial deadline or the extended one? Part of me is worried that they misplaced the first batch of applications haha.

Initial deadline here

Emory general track just went out via mass email. You must call to schedule your interview. The admin said that 1/15 was going fast so jump on it if you were planning for that date.

Other dates:
Wednesday January 6, 2016

Friday January 8, 2016

Monday January 11, 2016

Thursday January 21, 2016

Emory counseling center? You saying "general track" makes me think not.

Rejection, mass email.

They also didn't BCC people so I can see the emails of others rejected. Puts a bad taste in my mouth, honestly.

I received the same email, and I am pretty irked that the site did not make an effort to protect applicants' confidentiality.

Keep in mind that it may have been an individuals inadvertent error (e.g., thought they were typing in the bcc box, but weren't) etc. You give someone an extra 20 hours of work a week to do in addition to their usual workload, and sometimes mistakes happen. Still unfortunate, but may have just been an honest mistake, like we all make when we get tired.

Ok, there's still hope. Thanks so much!
