2015-2016 Vanderbilt University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Right there with you, still waiting with a 3.98 and 35 MCAT. Probably in the same spot as 97% of all other applicants. At this point though all other secondaries have been submitted (Vandy is def the most selective that I've encountered) and really waiting to see about II from other schools already. It also makes me wonder about quality of fit, I don't want to be the dumbest kid in class... so hang in there Alkaloid and let destiny do its thing.
Just being you guys with a 34 and a 3.95. Glad to have the break though, but already wrote an autobiography for San Diego so this one is almost ready to go, if I ever get the chance.

Yeah Finally got my secondary from UCSD yesterday. So even if the Vandy one does show up ...already got it covered. Good luck Rainbow Zebra, looks like were applying to the same schools with similar stats, maybe see you on the interview trail.

Yes lots of familiar avatars for my school list. We all seem to cluster around the schools that are private or Oos friendly. Good luck to you.

has anyone gotten a secondary without having their LORs in? thanks!

Hey all! I'm an MSTP applicant. I know Vandy screens pretty heavily for MD-only, but from reading through SDN, it seems like maybe they don't screen for MD/PhD. Should I think about contacting them soon since I haven't received one yet? Primary submitted on day 1. They're the only school holding out on me at this point! I've received no correspondence/app received/etc from them at all.

I got mine several weeks ago, so maybe you should call and see what is up (couldn't hurt, right?).

How could a 3.85 or a 35 be below their auto-cutoff? They would miss a TON of great candidates with that as their screen.
It seems that from previous years, they've sent immediate secondaries to everyone above something like a 37/3.8 and then personally screened everyone else. I assumed that I hadn't received my secondary yet because that personal screen takes longer, but now I'm starting to worry since I'm still waiting!

Agree with you here. When were you verified. I was 7/15. Still waiting 🙁

I get that the initial screen is extremely selective but is the second wave very selective?

LizzyM 70-73, and vandy secondary came 7/20. just be patient. vandy said they are taking more time this cycle then they typically would given the unusual circumstances.

Congratulations on all those who've received the new batch of secondaries! Welcome to the hell club! 😛

Has anyone had a problem with creating an account after getting an invitation to submit a secondary? The link I received to create a username/password just brought me to a normal login page with no option to create a new account. Thanks!

Stats

~6700 applicants
~1600 invited to complete secondary
~500 invited to interview
~220-230 accepted

Secondary (there is a rigorous screen)
  1. Write a brief autobiography. As completely and precisely as possible, give a picture of yourself, your family, and events you consider important to you. In doing so, identify the values that are of greatest importance to you. If you have completed your undergraduate education, please comment on what you have done or have been doing since graduation. (1200 words or less)
  2. Please discuss a challenging situation or obstacle you have faced in the past. Why was it challenging? How did you handle it? Knowing what you know now, would you do anything differently? What did you learn? (500 words or less)
Important Dates (2014-2015)
First secondary invite: July 1st, 2014
First interview invitation: August 4th, 2014
First acceptance: December 16th, 2014 via phone call (75% scholarships extended in acceptance offer)

First post-interview rejection: February 24th, 2015 via email and portal update

Interview

Curriculum

Notes
  • Vanderbilt anticipates extending 75% tuition scholarships to 75% of their incoming class.
  • 6700 applications received for 2014-2015 cycle; HEAVY screening for secondaries (only 1600 or so given out)
    • as per the 2014-2015 application thread, applicants surmised that stats greater than or equal to a 3.8 GPA and 37 MCAT were automatically screened in for a secondary. Students below these stats were personally reviewed for secondaries. Note that this has not been confirmed by the Vanderbilt office.
  • 2x waves of decisions: if you interview before mid-November, you should hear back around mid-December. You will be accepted or rejected or placed on hold until February. Another batch of decisions are released in February: results can be accept, reject, or waitlist.
  • Not much waitlist movement in recent years, according to new admissions director/dean
  • Prior match results.

Where did you see that Vanderbilt anticipates extending these scholarships?

Thanks for sharing, wow coming up quick! Now hopefully this won't turn out like #UMichMondays haha

I'm hopeful too haha but that link says the earliest for the secondaries was 7/6 and they end up coming out 7/8 this year

Received my secondary last night and also having this problem. Has anyone figured out what to do yet?

"Stats

so it's harder to get a secondary than to get into my undergraduate school, and I'm below their mean gpa and mcat
