2015-2016 Vanderbilt University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I can't think of anything else you could talk about aside from a personal challenge you faced...unless I'm reading your question wrong haha!

"Please discuss a challenging situation or obstacle you have faced in the past."
I'm guessing personal vs. professional challenge. Like, a tough experience at home vs. a tough experience running a club or something. I think either is fine. It's always more about the skills you used than the situation itself.

Oh I see! And absolutely agreed, the emphasis is on what you learned from it and how you dealt with it.

I guess I was screened out - thanks for the consideration Vandy and good luck to the applicants!

Did they mail you something, or are you just assuming? I wouldn't give up hope just yet. It's still really early, and if they are reviewing apps by hand before sending out secondaries then it will take time.

Assuming, because based on the timing I likely got reviewed.

You never know, but my stats are well below their 10%, so I expected some of these. I will hang in there for now!

Anyone under the numeric cutoff receiving secondaries yet?

I've gotten other screened secondaries (UCSF for example) but no Vandy love yet.

I think a few of us received secondaries, and were below the numeric cutoff. Having said that, I'm sure Vandy continues to send secondaries for a while.

Congrats on UCSF, I'm still hoping I get some secondary love from them!

Just received an email from Vandy asking me to please consider Nashville and Vanderbilt for my medical education, closing with "We look forward to seeing your application soon." Well, that's probably not gonna happen unless, you know, you guys send me a secondary. 🙄

Do you mind giving a rough estimate of your stats? Thanks!

I think I posted it on the previous page, but if not, ~ 3.95/37

Oh, my apologies. May have been on one of the first 2 pages...only cmd+f'd page 3 🙂

Anyway, thanks a bunch! Def think you are above the threshold!!! Which seems to be 3.8 and 37...thus, back to the question, has anyone below the threshold received one? It looks almost as if not. My bet is people start seeing some secondaries on Monday.

As it turns out, it appears that the numeric threshold was increased to a 3.8/38 this year. Those of us with 37s, etc. did not receive secondaries until a few days after those above the numeric threshold received theirs.

Edit: I think you should be able to see this somewhere in the first few pages, hope that helps!

I am sticking to my guns...maybe they sent in two rounds...an a.) round and b.) round...not sure they could read through all the 3.8, 37's in the like one or two days and then have deep enough discussion to decide to eliminate someone of such high caliber so quickly...100% could be wrong though 🙂 We could prove you are correct easily if - did anyone with a 3.8 and 37 NOT receive a secondary?

2 questions.
1. How do people feel about the really condensed preclinical year, as opposed to most schools taking 2 years for that stuff? My friends who are at schools that take 2 years for preclinicals tell me all about the knowledge cramming, though I guess its inevitable. Does everyone feel prepared for step 1?

2. Did anyone else get emails asking them to apply after taking the MCAT? Just trying to see if its something they send to everyone kind of how like we all got loads of spam from colleges during the end of high school.

I got (and am still getting) those as well! They are one of the main reasons I am applying to Vanderbilt as I did not even consider it before. Their curriculum looks awesome! I would love to hear a current/future student's perceptions of it.

Received a secondary just now after having my application verified earlier in the day. Very excited at the opportunity. Good luck, everyone applying!!!

Is it even worth pre-writing the secondary in my case (or even submitting my primary to them for that matter) if my LizzyM = 70? I guess my question is, has anyone with the same stats that's already been verified received a secondary? Thanks guys and good luck to all those that are still waiting or have received their secondary!!!

I did and now I'm wondering the same thing retrospectively

I have received a secondary and my stats are pretty bad. I have a LizzyM of 65 (35 MCAT but very low undergrad GPA, although a 4.0 in my Master's program).
I am sure all the secondaries have not been send out yet.

Me too! I think I fell victim to some good 'ole SDN neuroticism! It's just such a nerve racking process!

Seriously compadres what's everyone reading that's giving them this sense of relief?

Are you in a Vandy affiliated Master program, or a legacy??

For anyone that completed the secondary, how long was your autobiography? I am about 250 words short of the 1200 limit. Think that's too short?

EDIT: Sorry, I just read the thread with people asking if anyone with lower stats got a secondary. I have a LizzyM < 70 and got a secondary this morning.

I haven't gotten a secondary either but I did send them an update with my gap year plans last week and they acknowledge it today via email. Ughhhhhhh the anticipation is killing me
