**2016-2017 URM Medical School Application Thread**

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received my II 9/30 and at that time the available dates were the December 5th through 12th or something like that. So it's possible they are nearing their last few IIs

@Chelsea FC Pitt concludes its interview season mid-December so it is actually possible for them to be done with invites, or have a few left for the latter dates, or if people withdraw their invites.

Edit: I was complete 9/20 for Pitt if you were wondering.

Mizzou School of Medicine sent me a Diversity letter encouraging me to apply and ended the email saying that tomorrow is the deadline for applications. Like WTF how unprofessional is that, I dont know who thought that was a good idea but this school whom I didn't even know about has surly left a negative taste in my mouth.

Not to mention the fact that Mizzou isn't all that URM friendly

Hi Everyone!

I am interested in applying to medical school and wondering where to apply. I am somewhat of a non-traditional student. I did my undergraduate in communications at Howard University but did my science classes later at another university. I am wondering what are my chances and where should I apply. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

Literally anywhere (ignoring schools that are OOS and have in state bias). So research where you would want to go and apply there, because you'll have a great shot stats wise.

Edit: Though you could stand to add some more medically related ECs. Have you shadowed? I just think you'll perhaps be questioned on how invested in the field you are and maybe how you know this is what you want without sufficient and encompassing experiences.

Thanks for the reply! I will be doing some shadowing soon, I already shadowed an oral surgeon for about 20hrs and will be doing some other shadowing. What kind of medically related EC'S would you suggest?

Shadowing is the big one. Scribe work. Volunteering (which you are). Mainly I just meant bulk it up so that you have substantial experiences rather than a few fleeting ones.

Maybe see if you can shadow a primary care physician (even if that's not what you want to do).

Lets break it down:
GPA: Solid
MCAT: Solid
Research: Seems like you have it covered maybe not as strong as your MCAT and GPA but maybe it's stronger I'm not sure based on your description.
Clinical Volunteering: You want to get about 150-200 hours if possible. Active experience where you are being helpful to the patients instead of just doing adminstrative work is the ideal scenario.
Nonclinical Volunteering: You want to get about 100-150 hours. Service to the underserved and members of the AA community would be a plus
Shadowing: 50 hours is a good number to shoot for, and get some primary care shadowing in there as well.
Leadership: Not a deal breaker if you do not have it, but it helps!

The MCAT and GPA is what most people struggle with and you've got those both locked down, so if you round out your app you will be good to go, and yes that includes schools like Harvard, Stanford, Hopkins etc. 🙂 Best of luck although you wont need it 😉 Maybe we will run into each other on the app trail next year if my upcoming MCAT doesn't get the best of me haha:hilarious:

Thanks a lot and good luck on your mcat!

Interview 3 a doctor you will be! That third one is a important interview! Right now I'm in the mind frame that I need to charm my ass off in the one interview I have because it might be my only chance . Hoping for more so I can be more relaxed .
Don't worry dude I only interviewed at 2 and still became a doc, but I turned down my last 2 after both acceptance. Congratz on the new II; mind sharing?

Thanks for the kind words man the second II was from Temple!! Pennsylvania been giving me serious love. Wondering if I can ,take a clean sweep with their mid tier schools and get love from Jefferson and Drexel as well. My dad and I will have to drive to both interviews in his old 1990's car to both locations cause I dont have the money so thats a added level of stress but I am super grateful of the interviews and I hope I can be as effective as you were. Still waiting for some NY love though!

See posts #1022 and 1023. I'm sure there are others if you look through the thread.

Thanks!! I will be sure to go over those. If anyone else have any to chip in please let me know. I am soo nervous about my upcoming interview and I have no idea how to prepare really.

Just arrived in Boston!! So excited for my interview tomorrow. My host is a fourth year and she is amazing! And her place is literally, I mean literally, across the street from BU.
Reading over some interview prep but definitely trying to relax since it's a 1-on-1

Yay! Have fun in Bahston. Your interview is going to be super conversational. I'm so excited for you :biglove:

Did you interview here? Do you have any tips?

I did! Back in September. It's honestly just a dope day overall. The Dean literally greets you first thing in the morning and hosts the whole day, quite impressive. I had some really cool interviewees, we all blended well. The day is super low stress, and they emphasize the "2-way fit" thing. So if you can see yourself there, ask the important questions. It's a long ass day so sleep well. READ UR INTERVIEWER BIO PLZ. It helps you mentally prepare for who you're going to have.

Most importantly, breathe & be yourself darlin :highfive:

Weird. Well it was my worst interview this season, just felt off my game. Ah well.

I'm sure you did great! I have a newfound respect for people who get in with 1-2 interviews. The first couple are SO hard.

On to the next one!
