**2016-2017 URM Medical School Application Thread**

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats bruh. I have an interview coming up at Tufts. Any pointers? Was the interview really stressful or was it more like a conversation?

Thank you! Very very very conversational (like talk about favorite wines conversational lol). There are 2 interviews. Either student/faculty or faculty/faculty. My student interviewer was super chill and we bonded over how we rode the struggle bus thru biochem lmao be yourself, smile a lot, be light hearted. They already like you, just gotta make em love you. Go kill it :luck:

Awesome! Thank you. They scheduled my interview really late, it's on November 29th. But at least I have an acceptance somewhere already and you're telling me that this interview is not stressful so I don't have too much pressure going in lol.

Hey, I am applying to Tufts, so if you don't mind me asking, what is your gpa and mcat score? Thank you.

Hey, 3.5 cumulative, strong upward trend (4.0 in last 4 semesters), 30 MCAT (old MCAT). Honestly it seems like schools have liked my personal statement, and I have some legitimate reasons for two of my bad semesters that I had in undergrad which kind of explains my not-so-stellar GPA.

Congrats! May i ask when your app was complete?

Hey all, joining the party late, But I just read through this thread, and it is truly inspiring. The level of camaraderie amongst the URM med school applicants of this thread is so freakin dope, and it brings me so much joy to watch us all succeed, and enter a field where so few of us even get a chance to apply.

Just wanted to give a big shoutout to @Chelsea FC for pointing me to this thread, and a shoutout to all my Latinos out there reppin. Anyways, I completed my app in 9/12 for some schools, and 9/19 for others, and I currently have 5 II's at Downstate, Upstate, Stony Brook, Boston University, and University of Rochester, My Stony interview is coming up Nov 1st, if anyone has tips for any of these, any help would be appreciated, I am conducting a bunch of research myself if anyone needs some info as well, and I'll give some tips based on my interview experiences when they happen.

Oh Also, Congrats to all my gunners out there with the early acceptances, y'all deserve it!

Thanks, so did I but I decided to keep it on my list last minute. I actually almost deleted the email this morning because I was 99% sure it was a rejection. 😱

Omg that's crazy!!! Very amazing, you are a standout that's why!

I know I already posted about my acceptance to Eastern Virginia Medical School but I just got an acceptance to my first choice at the University of Maryland!! Great school, only 30 minutes from home, and I'll be paying in-state tuition!! I'm so elated it's unreal. This is still like a dream to me

YASSSSSSSS get it :soexcited:

congratulations to everyone getting accepted! im so excited for how far this group has come!

Agreed!

Seriously everyone has done so amazing. I hope our success brings more URM to the forums. Representation is everything, and each one of us is changing the future in some way for future URM applicants!

But side note... I wish we could all just go to the same school... how amazing would it be to have this kind of support, love, and encouragement from your peers through medical school?!

I agree. We should definitely compile a list of where we plan to attend or make a private Facebook group and create a tangible network. Even if we end up far apart, this is a great support group.

Wait this is such a good idea. I was lowkey hurt because there's not one school that has accepted all of us yet lol but the Facebook group would be so lit. And we can put faces to our names. And we could keep tabs on each other's lives. And plan meet ups. And OMG. So happy. Much joy.

Not to be a nerd about this but with all this support, brains, and great vibes we would raise any schools Step average, I'll start the petition now to get those acceptances rolling.

When you get into Havard put in a good word for me so we can go to the same school lolz jk

Quick question guys, any o f you have extensive research or publications ?? Chances are they will ask you about it right ? I am wondering if I should plan a mini poster like presentation in my head or just a elevator pitch form of my paper. Its been a while since I presented or done any research so I am a bit rusty.

I have extensive research experience and have been asked everything from a elementary school level explanation to specifics related to my various projects and their clinical implications.

Just know your research (hypothesis, goals, what you learned) and be able to talk about it from a zoomed out view as well as an in depth view if necessary (unlikely).

Someone straight up asked me the etiology of an incurable disease that I was involved in doing research on. I don't think they expect you to be an expert (unless you published the paper) but be well versed with what you were doing and I think it'll be fine. Just my $.02

Hey Congrats!! I had the chance to visit this med school the summer before college for a week long pre-med program. HUGE congrats, i LOVED my time there! It's such an amazing school that had a direct impact on my pursuit for medicine. I wish you all the best!

So only attended one interview so far, but I was definitely asked an open ended question like "tell me about your research" so I had to explain everything ground up, but I definitely did it in a public audience like I would explain to a community member. I was also asked to compare my patient populations from different research experiences and what factors could lead to differences seen. So also be able to find common threads between your research experiences and compare and contrast various points.

Also, I was asked some "what would you do" questions about my interviewer's research, which was in a molecular field that I know nothing about, but I think the point is he wanted to see my critical thinking skills and how I would attack problems.

I, too, was asked about my research. But since it was clinical research, I was asked to roleplay a typical session with a human participant. Also asked the outcome we came to. So the safe bet would be to know the main details, and be able to pitch it.

At one interview, I was asked to describe each research experience of mine in detail. My interviewer was a PhD and so that took a while and the interviewer asked very specific questions.

I would know the background, rationale, hypothesis and main results of your research experiences. I would also be prepared to answer questions like you would face at a poster session.

I was asked a very general " tell me about your research"

I personally had a quick elevator pitch, something i would explain to a 1st grader, and a more detailed version. I usually did quick summary of disease/biochem/molecular bio pathologies, methods and why we are using these methods, results, significance.

I also made sure to ask if they knew certain things before i explained so i could get a better idea of how much they knew and whether i needed to explain from scratch or if i could build on their knowledge. You gotta be careful here because some may be offended if you explain things they already know like they're dumb but they might also not like it if you're too specific and assume they know too much.

i say make sure you know what YOU were doing and why. I personally haven't gotten that in depth about my research but that depends on the school and on whoever interviews you

Ditto to everyone here. I've been asked detailed questions and extremely simple ones. It varied based on your interviewer and their level of familiarity with the subject.

Generally know the nature of your experiment, talk about the science behind it, be able to discuss your results and why it seems significant. I find that specifics only become necessary if your interviewer specializes in that field or has collaborated with your lab at one point

I must admit, IDK about temple but both schools I interviewed emphasizes community service and they didn't even talk about my research despite that I had 3 summer research internships and was a tertiary author! this isn't a guarantee but if you have done enough research to get posters and papers expect a question like "why not MD/Ph.D?"

Anyone here still with no interview invites or is it just me?
