So there are 3 programs with the Sinai name...?

Cedar Sinai in Cali.

Mt Sinai and SLR Mt Sinai West (formerly St Luke's Roosevelt?) in NYC.

How are the 2 Sinai different in NYC?

...and there is a Mt Siani Beth Isreal?

Yes you are correct.

There are 2 in NY because they are 2 different hospitals/GMEs. Beth Israel is closed/closing so they are no longer taking on new residents/fellows.

Was wondering if this happened to anyone else. I have an interview date that is not listed above with two programs. Does this mean its just a courtesy interview and they threw me on alone so thus its meaningless?

I talked to my PD and Chairman about this. They agree that these are most likely courtesy interviews. You could always go and try to impress them anyway, but I wouldn't waste my time on that. I'd cancel those interviews and focus on the ones where I had a real chance. I hope this helps.

In general, if they're polite enough to interview you, they're probably polite enough to match you if they like you. Either way, face time/building a network of folks that know your name/face/etc can be invaluable, even if you don't match there.

I'm sure your PD/chair would prefer you toil away in the clinical duties though.

Any program with enough time for free days for courtesy interviews probably isn't worth our year of education time.

i've been waitlisted at 5 programs so far, when do people cancel interviews to give the waitlist people a chance?

what would people say is a safe number of interviews?.. I am currently at 9 and was wondering if you guys felt that was sufficient

Have programs actively emailed you saying you are 'waitlisted'?

Well according to NRMP last year, if you had 3 interviews you had 85% chance of matching...

Charting Outcomes of the PAIN FELLOWSHIP Match 2017

It also depends I think on where you interview. Having 5 interviews at places with ratio of 5:1 is probably same as interviewing at 10 places with ratio of 10:1? I dunno

In general, if they're polite enough to interview you, they're probably polite enough to match you if they like you. Either way, face time/building a network of folks that know your name/face/etc can be invaluable, even if you don't match there.

I'm sure your PD/chair would prefer you toil away in the clinical duties though.

Well thanks everyone for the feedback. That leaves me to only two real interviews smh. anybody know what someone can do to be a better applicant when re-applying cause that will likely be my case

Last year 58% of applicants ended up with their 1st choice. So its more likely you will match then not even if you only have ONE interview....stay positive. (Yes I know, obviously if you have 20 interviews, you are probably a strong candidate and that skews the 58% results, but my point is that there is hope even with a couple ivs).

I have read on this forum in previous years of people with 2 ivs that have matched...and people with 8 ivs that have not matched.

So you never know.

Is that matched applicants or all applicants? I'm thinking matched.

Great Question and I should Clarify:

Based on these Results: http://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Results-and-Data-SMS-2017.pdf

Refer to Table 5

But a Summary:

For ALL Applicants (401 TOTAL APPLICANTS) :

1st Choice: 45%
2nd Choice: 13.5%
3rd Choice: 6.7%
Greater Than 3rd Choice: 12.0%

So to summarize, 77% chance of matching if you applied
. Almost Half (45%) get their 1st choice, just by throwing your hat into the applicant pool.

Among ONLY MATCHED Applicants (309 MATCHED APPLICANTS):

1st Choice: 58%
2nd Choice: 17.4%
3rd Choice: 8.7%
Greater Than 3rd Choice: 15.5%

So I admit, the 58% stat is a bit misleading, as it is only for MATCHED applicants. But on the flipside, you almost have a 60% chance of getting top choice if you match.

When it comes to the Match, the interview is king.

No words are truer than these.

The cardinal sin of a fellowship interviewer is ranking an applicant highly based on an amazing application despite mediocre interview. Obviously a great application+interview is best. But if you are offered an interview, even just one, you have the power to make the match a reality. Stay focused, prepare diligently, be honest/open, don't be weird.

This is pure speculation. May be true of some, may be untrue of others. Given that most of my interviews have been "get to know you" types, I think one can rarely move oneself from the bottom of the pile to the top no matter how much one prepares.

Here is my own speculation (worth exactly what you are paying for it): interviews are meant to screen out the social weirdos and assess for fit. That does not make the interview king. It makes it one last screening process.

This is my opinion, not the word of God. Just like everything else on this site.

I did interviews when I was working in academic ER.

Many of the candidates are very similar with respect to their applications.

Without a doubt, the interview plays an integral part of the process.

You are right that it will not move an unqualified candidate up to high on the list - but those candidates usually do not get invites for interviews, particularly for limited fellowship spots.

Actually, I didn't say anything about unqualified applicants. Obviously, I am only talking about candidates who are good enough to be interviewed. I also didn't say the interview wasn't integral.

That being said, I'm very interested in your experience. Can you please elaborate on what kind of interview performance results in an applicant being ranked in a top spot?

Incorrect. Not pure speculation. I have interviewed and sat on the admissions committee in almost every capacity including for undergraduate, residency, and now for pain fellowships. Ducttape is absolutely correct, you'd be surprised how similar candidates are with respect to their applications at the interview level. You'd also be surprised how much can be deduced from a seemingly "get to know you" type of interview.

With such few spots and high competitiveness, "assessing for fit" is almost everything. If you've received an interview, we've already determined that at least on paper, we are willing to rank you highly. So at this point, yes, the interview is king.

I'm usually impressed most by candidates who are clearly interested in the field, present themselves as knowledgeable but not haughty or overbearing. Listens intently and does not argue yet will be able to debate and defend an opinion cogently. Willing to learn but not falsely aggressively overeager. Calm demeanor but shows life and energy when discussing their future career.

If a candidate argues or essentially is unteachable at an interview, it won't go well through their residency.

While we have some people who are in the know commenting on the forum, any advice for post-interview communication? Will it be appropriate to let our top few choices know that they are high on our list, or should that be reserved for our #1 rank?

Also on the topic of post-interview communication, have people been hearing back after their thank you letters? Few have given the "you'd do great here," and most have said "good luck on the rest of the interview trail." Some haven't responded at all. How much should we be reading into these responses?

from my limited experience: do send them, but don't read anything in to them. it will only set you up for disappointment.

(unless it is from the PD saying that they are offering a spot outside the match just for you...)

Of all the things that can turn the tide in your favor, thank you cards may play one of the smallest roles. But still, it's a nice professional courtesy.

I wouldn't read too much into post-interview communications unless they has very specific red-flag wording. But even then, nothing is binding. Most of it is just professional courtesy in return with a relatively positive spin for the sake of politeness.

You've had candidates argue with you on interviews!? Damn!

Maybe he shouldn't be assessing who is "teachable" at an interview. I would think LORs and scores should cover that.
the interview as so many others have stated is about whether someone will "fit in". learning if someone is receptive to advice or medical knowledge is part of this process.

and LOR and scores do not reveal major character flaws or antisocial personality disorders such as narcissism.

Unfortunately all candidates are (unsurprisingly) "amazing, outstanding, great, teachable, etc., etc." based on LORS. And if you have two candidates from the same program/writer, their LORs will be almost identical except for a few key words if the writer is kind of enough to distinguish between the two for you.

Yes the interview is brief but if you can't assess some indication of "teachable" pre-Match, it's too late. And you'll potentially be stuck with a fellow that no one wants to work with for an entire year.

It sounded a lot like pimping during an interview. IMO, inappropriate at this juncture in our career to be pimped at an interview.

I agree with what you've said though.

Ah I see. No reason they should be pimping you. That would rub me the wrong way as well. Compare it to your other interviewers to see if it appears to be a program-wide culture or simply an out-of-date, crotchety attending.

On the interview trail myself; a consideration an interviewer has is to ask themselves whether they could work with the person in front of them for 12 months.

If in a setting where it is understood that you need to be as agreeable as possible, you give the impression of being argumentative, I wouldn't blame the interviewer for for having second thoughts. Doesn't necessarily mean it's a pimping session.

A couple of programs seem to have pimped at interviews, albeit with varying degrees intensity. If that is how they feel it is best to differentiate among candidates who look similar on paper, then beggars can't be choosers.

Ah, but is a soon-to-be board eligible resident really a "beggar"? It hasn't happened to me yet so perhaps I'm tilting at windmills... I just assumed (stupidly).

I have a decent number of interviews, so would hope I'm not a beggar, but speaking metaphorically.

On the trail, you have to be a method actor - polite, likeable, teachable etc.

I've had a couple of interviewers on the trail who I thought asked a stupid question, on both occasions tried to be as pleasant about it as possible, while on the inside thinking it was BS; I'm the one interviewing, they've been through the process, so at least give them that respect.

Everyone says it's a very small field, so not to burn bridges, at least early on....

I matched at a program where I got into a semi argument with one of the interviewers. I also got pimped at a program which left a very bad taste in my mouth and dropped it significantly on my rank list. I think the whole thing is a crap shoot. Glad I don't have to do it again. The waiting gets painful around end of summer time when interviews are essentially over and you still have months till match day.

I absolutely think it's ok to disagree with your interviewer, you're allowed to have opinions - that's the point of academia. As long as you have a coherent thought process underlying your choice.

It's about disagreeing without being objectionable. I was asked a question at my last interview, I reframed the question and then answered it. The interviewer and I seemed to get on well.

Traditional med student type pimping probably would leave a bad taste with me as well.

Yeah I was asked how the mu receptor worked. When I answered that I was asked what happens downstream in the cell. They kept going until I didn't know. Same with questions in regard to procedures, indications, what does facet joint pain feel like? Why do that approach etc. It was insane.
