2018-2019 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Someone in my cohort today got an invite for the Pediatrics track at Mailman Center for Child Development in Miami. Don't have any details other than that, but thought I'd pass it along anyway!

Hi all,

So I got the same invite to Southwest Consortium, Neuropsychology track that others got today, and I'm wondering how quickly to respond? The invitation just says to respond by December 15th to confirm your intention to attend or discuss alternative arrangements. So I'm wondering if I should wait and see what other invites I get, to make sure I can make that date? But I feel weird not responding right away. Thoughts?

Hey CatsFan. Felt the same way as you did. I went ahead and responded that I planned on being there. If something changes later on, you can always let their committee know. That way they can make sure they have an expected head count ASAP. I'm sure if you waited a few weeks that's fine too.

Congrats on the interview, see you there!🙂

I’m wondering that as well! The date I was assigned (1/10) conflicts with a lot of other sites. I would prefer to go on one of the other days that other people have posted but I don’t want to lose this interview either. It’s a dilemma!

Who else here as applied to Eastern Virginia Medical School? Any idea of when we may hear? My stupid excel chart isn't helping and now I need to seek reassurance. Helllpppp meeeeeeee. I need an interviewwwwwww. I'm like Veruca Salt and I literally want it now :zip:

According to your excel when do they start contacting? My email is pretty quiet with rejections/invites and I’m regretting all the listserves I joined....oh the waiting!

Rejection from MN Children's (11/15 individual email). Definitely mad. 🙁
Aww, hang in there! This process is definitely grueling and breeds a lot of self-doubt and insecurity, AND you are a bomb-ass applicant and I'm sure there are many more invites to come your way! You got this! 🙂

I also compiled a page in my massive all-things-internship spreadsheet where I listed past notification dates. At least for the sites on my list, a handful (n = 3) notified around this time (although I've only heard from 1 of those 3). The week of Thanksgiving seemed to be a common time for invites (n = 7), and a handful also sent out invites the week after (n = 3). The remaining 5 sent out offers the first week and a half of December. This is limited to the sites on my list, but it does look like things really pick up around Thanksgiving and the weeks after. Also, as my friend reminded me the other night, despite all the data I've collected, we'll hear from sites when we hear from them. Which is also her way of saying "I love you, but chill the eff out, be patient, and go live your life" hahah 🙂

Invitation: sent via email 11/14/17

Where do you find ouT when they sent out offers in past years? Not gonna lie, I’m in a constant state of anxiety

I swear, you kids get more and more neurotic year after year. Now's a great time for self-care. Go to the gym, listen to music, go for a walk, go to the bar. Go do anything that doesn't involve researching notification dates and making excel spreadsheets. It's out of your hands now.

For what it’s worth, I think it’s possibe to be both anxious AND do fun things/self care. I’ve been significantly less miserable ever since I radically accepted that I am going to be anxious during this waiting period. So now it’s just a matter of being anxious in an effective way. I can check my spreadsheet AND go to trivia and bingo nights and go on walks and enjoy the fall weather. It’s a dialectic, and it’s working for me 🙂

You are the best 🙂 I think I have been telling myself to "chill the eff out" since I was about three. I like to think I was born with a DTR in one hand and some anxiety meds in the other hahaha. My favorite phrase is "I'm OK" and sometimes I don't realize that I'm saying it out loud. I had a colleague call me out on it once. She was like, "Why do you keep saying I'm OK over and over?"

Taking a break from waiting for interviews to think about the interviews themselves :=|:-)::

Perhaps the further one gets away from internship the rosier it's remembered? 🙂

Good luck everyone. Hopefully, you will all look back on this in a few years a smile at the newest crop of applicants.

I just heard from them. I'm about to post the update. My excel sheet said anytime between yesterday and Friday. However, based on last year and the year before they seem to vary and they send out e-mails over the course of a few days. Deep breathssss and remember #bees #denvered #WWMD

My phrase is “you got this, babycakes.” Works nearly every time 🙂

Ughhhh sorrryyy. I forgot one. I need to write this down so if someone whispers one of these into my ear at an interview I don't get scared and hide in a closet.

I honestly think I'm looking forward to this forum-family-hashtag-whispering more than the interviews themselves

I wasn't very active on SDN when I applied for internship, so, tough to tell. But in the years since, it seems to be increasing with intensity. I'm personally not an anxious waiter. Once it's out of my hands, I'm fairly good about compartmentalizing things away. Also helps in clinical work having to tell people that they have terrible degenerative conditions that will only worsen over time.

I'm leaning towards waiting a bit...since they gave us the deadline of December 15th to respond, I don't think we'll lose the interview, and I think it would be more awkward to say that I'm attending and then try to change the date later. Glad I'm not the only one that was wondering about this!

I am loving your dialectics. All the things can exist and do exist. We really do need to be friends.

Selected the 1/17 date! Any others? I'm in the market for friends!

Who else has to deal with unrealistic standards from their family members? I told my dad about my New Mexico interview and he said "Oh, the nothing state!" Like there are so many infuriating things about this response.

Then he told me they did nuclear tests there back in the day because nobody wanted to live there. Okay thanks...

Do you watch Gilmore Girls? If not you should. It is #goals on how to deal with family hahaha. Mine is similar.

When I told my boyfriend yesterday about my two interviews he said, "Oh, the far away places." 🙄

I also love family members who think they know where you should apply even though they're not in psychology or even anything close...

Yes! I told my mom about getting an interview and she replies "to one of the competitive places?" which prompts several thoughts, including - (1) internship as a whole is competitive! getting an interview makes me happy! SUPPORT THAT!; (2) simply because an internship is in a less popular place or in a less known setting does not mean they do not offer appealing training opportunities!

For what it's worth: CONGRATS ON NEW MEXICO!!!!! I have heard great things about their training program and know people who have completed that internship (and also have a few grad friends interviewing there this year)! You earned that interview - don't forget that!
