2018-2019 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have no idea if anyone on here will relate, but are any of you new moms who are currently breastfeeding and will need to pump come interview time? I believe interview schedules are back to back for most of the day and I'm starting to worry I won't have time or a place to pump in between interviews. Any advice out there?
‍♀️ Bf-ing mama here! My advisor told me I should let the sites know when I go to set up interview dates, and that if a site has a problem with it, that’s probably not somewhere I want to be for a year. Sorry I don’t have more advice, but please let me know if you want to talk more about it/have someone to commiserate with 🙂 There seem to be so few of us in that position, we need to stick together!

I am a formerly-BFing momma - my kiddo is almost in kinder now! If you want to feel out how mother-friendly they are, email their program assistant first to ask about how schedules are made. Let them know how often and for how long you will need a break. If you are concerned about unconscious bias and want to feel out their family-friendliness in other ways, you could bring a manual hand pump and do some pumping (and probably dumping out) anytime you have breaks, etc. Unfortunately this would likely be in a bathroom, unless you want to just tell them you need a few breaks for a medical reason (which I think this would qualify as). This option would only work if this is easy enough for you to hand pump on demand, and if you have enough milk that you can sacrifice some - two big ifs. It would allow you to carry less "equipment" with you though. I also know someone who had the luxury of having her partner or mother travel with her to every interview and hang around nearby, bringing the baby to nurse during breaks. She matched, so it worked out ok! Still had to ask for breaks though. Good luck with figuring this out in a way that works for you. Consider looking at organizations' websites to see what they offer to employees (e.g., do they talk about parental leave policies or having a private space?) Start by asking a site that seems most friendly to this. Solidarity to student mommas!

I have no advice but wanted you to know you're not alone and I've been stressing about the same thing. :-/

I was listening in on a webinar some sites did a few weeks back and they said just let the site know before the interview that you need those accommodations. They said if a site is not willing to accommodate this that it’s a red flag they won’t value work life balance (as much as we can anyway). Also, they said if a site doesn’t offer accommodations or is difficult, they literally said “run away” from that site haha. FYI these were well known sites that offered this advice. If they don’t offer a separate room, they mentioned maybe excusing yourself to the restroom. Hope this helps !

Thank you! I just saw the other posts about this and agree...if it's an issue, it's not a site I should consider because I may still need the accommodation as an intern. It's reassuring to see others recommending what I've been thinking about. As if this process wasn't already complicated and stressful enough!

Congratulations!!! This is the first of my sites to be posted on here so I’m hoping I receive a positive email while presenting today at ABCT

Mine too, if they sent out invites in yesterday and I don't receive one, does that mean am not considered? 🙁

Sorry!! I put the date wrong - I just heard this morning so I wouldn't worry yet!

When a site emails you for an interview & offers you dates, then you reply with your date preferences, how long does it take them to get back to you to solidify an actual interview date? What has everyone else's experience been?

For the University of Chicago Medicine, my interview date was confirmed in under 10 minutes.

Finally an interview!!

Did you happen to get an email back yet solidifying your interview date? Someone tell me to stop refreshing my email. Please.

I haven't heard back yet, but I think it's okay to relax now 🙂 We got the interview.

Actually, I am only refreshing my email so much now because I'm waiting on other interviews! I've seen 5 others of mine posted here already, and I'm hoping to hear from UAB today.

Is it just me or does it seem like university counseling centers send notifications later? It's been complete radio silence over here! The waiting is the worst part..I have found myself binge watching netflix, drinking all the warm beverages, and bursting into random hysterical laughter. Tottallly normal..I hope...🤔
I think you're right about UCCs. The few "we got your application" emails that I got said on or before Dec 15, and history supports that timeframe (previous year threads). I'm all UCCs, and it's radio silence (and mass amounts of anxiety) over here.

Meee too!! All the anxiety, obsessively checking e-mails, and endless amounts of mindless distractions. I freaked out when I got the first "we got your application" e-mails because the first line sounded like a rejection. Yay anxiety! Is there a counselor in the house who can help? 😉

One of mine took a day to get back to me. One took a couple hours. I sent my preferences to another yesterday and haven't heard back yet, so it will be at least a day.

Thanks! I'm still waiting. Apparently there's always something to be anxious about... If only I knew some adaptive coping strategies...

Hello from the other siiiiide (I feel like Adele right now, but less glamorous):
I've been involved with internship interviews at two sites now (as an evaluator), and we have generally tried to ask interviewees to contact us with any scheduling and/or dietary concerns when we offer interviews. As an interviewee a few years ago, this statement was in about a third of the email invites I received, too.

If you need to pump, by all means, please notify the site ASAP, and be specific about what you need (breaks every X hours, a private space with an outlet, a fridge, etc.). For some sites, this will be easy since they may already have a lactation room. For other sites, they might have to block off therapy rooms, reserve fridge space, etc., so giving them notice is important.
I agree with the other comments; if they're not happy to accomodate, they probably aren't somewhere you want to rank highly.

The timeframe has varied from 1 day to 7 days for me.
