2020 Cycle Waitlist Support Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well everyone, I would like to thank you for your wonderful words getting me through these last few months. I was officially accepted off one of my two waitlists (had no precious acceptances) this morning. As today’s my birthday, it doesn’t get much better. Thank you to all of you again, going through this process and being able to “hear” people going through the same thing was much needed after months of family and friends not understanding what this takes. I’m praying for good news for all of you! Thank you again!!!

Happy birthday!! And congrats! What an awesome way to get your acceptance.

Let your top choice know about the CTE date, but that they are still your top choice. Unless you already told them about your CTE date in a previous letter, I don’t think it would look desperate.

Does anyone know whether to do this in ANOTHER formal LOI, or just a casual email to the admissions office?

Congrats and happy birthday!!! Hell of a present!

Wow, I relate to this so much. I have never doubted myself ever in my life before this process, and now I have anxiety (which is new for me) and I think I have been going through imposter syndrome. Trying to work on apps, but my heart literally races and my hands shake a little when I open my computer and try to work on it. I am trying to just relax and trust the process. Congrats to everyone who’s gotten in and good look to my 0 A gang

I am still in shock but I can officially say that I will be a medical student this fall! This has been the toughest year for me emotionally. I was in such a low place, but the advice, coping techniques, and overall support from this thread really helped me through! I only had 2 interviews this cycle which turned into 2 waitlists, so I pretty much thought it was over for me. But you only need 1 A and I am so grateful for it. I still have to work on my anxiety but I will make sure to never ever doubt myself again. I am also going to keep using the coping methods you all offered to me on here. Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back. I am rooting for you!!!

So excited for you!! Know that you are NOT alone in the anxiety, and you have all the power to take control over it! Be kind to yourself, rest, and celebrate your accomplishment! Congrats!

Congrats!!! I’ve seen your posts in some other threads and I’ve been rooting for you. Which school?

Please do not quote!

Little bit of a lurker on this thread but very much empathize with everyone waiting to hear from schools. The past few months have been stressful. I’m waiting to hear back from a school I desperately want to attend. Wondering if someone could weigh in on something that just happened. It seems TOO coincidental but ...

I missed a call from someone affiliated with my top choice program. I’m currently on their high priority wait list, a waitlist that apparently has not moved at all yet. I tried calling the number back, left a voicemail. No response. My hopes are obviously up but...the number is coming from someone in the school’s communications department. Not the chair of admissions or a doctor at the school. Could I have just missed an acceptance call???
If you missed the call, they will either leave a voicemail, leave an email, or call again the next business day.

Just got my first acceptance today! It’s been a wild ride. I’m still on 3 MD waitlists though and this acceptance was at a DO school. I would prefer to attend the DO school over 2 out of the 3 MD schools due to the location, program, and connections to residency spots. Don't loose hope! Your future can change for the better at any moment 🙂

Not sure if this is helpful for anyone, but I neurotically checked school threads again today and there was WL movement reported at Pitt, Wayne State, EVMS, Indiana, Central Michigan, and California Northstate. Also apparently Mt. Sinai and Dartmouth have reported "not a lot of movement this cycle".

CUSM has had some notable movement too!

Creighton has some movement this week and so did Western Michigan (and by movement I mean a couple who reported on sdn)

There were 1-2 at Brown too who I don't think said anything on SDN

I have posted a question on the main Pre Med forum that you may find interesting about what to say if you call Admissions for an update.

Oops yeah you guys are right, a few other schools had movement earlier last week! My post was only for movement on Friday. I usually only post a list of schools with movement here if it's occurring at more than a few schools within a day or two!

What happens if you have accepted your financial aid package and CTE'd to school A but get pulled off the WL very last minute to your dream school B? Can you cancel the loans for school A at that point?
If you CTE'd at school A, you should have pulled yourself off the WL for school B, so this is a weird question. If you meant PTE, I would contact the financial aid office - at most schools you can send loans back throughout the first semester/year of school, so I would imagine that you 'accepting' your financial aid package is not binding in any way.

Those of you with an A but still waiting, BE HONEST....

How many times on Mondays have you said, "OK, this is it! Last week to wait. If I don't hear something by this Friday I'm giving up and signing that lease, gonna CTE!" 😆

I've been saying "OK, this is it! Last week to wait. If I don't hear something by this Friday I'm giving up and studying seriously for my retake"

Hey all, I remember making an account just to post in this group. The support and camaraderie is tangible, so thank you everyone. There's a lot of wisdom in this thread.

To everyone still waiting, I know it's late in the cycle and it's difficult. I would tell you to not give up hope, but my practical advice is to work on your reapp or take some time to relax. It's okay to take breaks; we've worked so hard for so long, haven't we? For me, working on my reapp gave me some sense of control over my next steps, and brought me peace of mind.

I was working on my reapp today when I got my first acceptance.

I hope it works out for everyone, but it's really so hard to say. If you don't get in this year, you will eventually; that persistence has to count for something, right?

A couple more WL acceptances were reported today at Rosalind Franklin, Toledo, George Washington, and RWJMS. There was also recent movement at Wash U in St. Louis. Hopefully this week brings more movement for all of us 🙂

Where did you happen to see the NJMS movement? I am following that thread but not seeing anything reported there 🙁

I was wondering how important is it to send multiple letters of intent? Or is it sufficient to send updates that include statements about your interest in the school?

Follow instructions from the individual school. If they tell you to only send one letter, and you send multiple, they may interpret that as an inability to follow instruction. If they haven't told you explicitly, then feel free to inquire with them.

I would only send in a second one if your waitlist/acceptance situation has changed since your first letter (ie you got accepted into a better school).

There's a fine line between looking interested and looking desperate. It's up to you to determine what's in your best interest. I decided it was a gamble either way and sent my letter of intent twice because I did not get a response from the Dean of Admissions the first time.

Sometimes with these kinds of situations a handwritten card is just the thing that makes the difference. It may be old-fashioned but it means a lot. Try reaching out directly to your interviewers.

Anyone else neurotic enough and refreshing their Facebook group page or SDN every 15 minutes? 😳

Just thought I’d share my neurotic freak out with you lovely peeps. As I got ready to reapply I suddenly realized I forgot about a dual credit course I started but dropped out of senior year of high school. So I was freaking out that I needed a transcript and then trying to remember if I ever officially dropped the course through that university (and not just my HS) so I was worried I had some transcript out there with an F that I never reported. Anyways I requested a transcript for myself and they said they couldn’t give me a transcript because I withdrew (I figured I would at least have a W) so I asked for a letter for AMCAS that says I don’t have a transcript even though I attended. And their letter essentially said I dropped the course before the withdraw date so I don’t have an academic record. So essentially I don’t have to report anything about my attendance (or lack there of) to AMCAS. Cue end of freak out. Also, shout out to anyone who saw any of my neurotic posts on Reddit.

Quick question, i'm on two different WLs and I'm prepping my reapplication. I was wondering, will submitting my reapplication affect my WLs? Like will it automatically void them? Thx

Perfect, do you by any chance know if I could also submit my application for processing before my transcript is marked received on their end? Sorry if I'm being annoying. Thx again

I think it has to be received before you can submit. I would get in The primary ASAP, they’re still processing people that turned it in on May 28th

I submitted mine before my transcript was received. It will just say "on hold" until the transcript gets there

Everything is ready to go on my end I just need to review the schools I'm choosing and do a final polish to my PS. And well have them receive my transcripts. Since they're on May 28 I shouldnt be worried, by the time they reach this week they should have received everything especially my transcripts.

Focus on getting your PS done and submit it. You can tweak your school list after submitting!

Hi everyone! Would love any advice-

second cycle applicant and waitlisted at 1 MD school. I know there isn't much hope at this point and I'm starting my new application but the waitlist anxiety is terrible (it's my second time you'd think I'd know better). I sent an updater letter in April to the Dean personally since I interviewed with her/she sort of knows me. The school had some WL movement. I don't want to be super neurotic and annoy them but I just want to ask one last time about the WL before officially giving up. Does anyone have any advice on how to send a nice inquiry email? I've never emailed without an update letter so don't know how to proceed? Thanks!
edit: also was wondering if it's wise to ask feedback/advice for the new cycle in the same email?

It's still not too late in the season for an acceptance, so in all honesty I would say to wait, as difficult as that may be. People are accepted off of the waitlist as late as the same day that medical school starts. This is not unheard of. So keep hope alive and try not to bug them.

Does any one have any tips on how to phrase a third LOI at this point? Im running out of ways to express myself. Also I want to mention my upcoming CTE deadline at my current acceptance, so should I just say its upcoming or should I give them the real date? Any help is appreciated. Also if anyone is available to proof read my letter please DM me. Thank you!

Here's a rubric:
1st LOI = risky, but worth it (in most cases, depending on what you write)
2nd LOI = not wise
3rd LOI = even more ill-advised

So I would offer to read your LOI, but in fact I don't recommend sending any more than 1 LOI. The schools do get them. They do read them. Don't bug them, or you'll be guaranteed to get a R.

Ive been waitlisted here since October and have been spacing out my letters (last one was in April) so at this point im gonna shoot my shot and send one anyway. The first 2 were letters of interest/updates, only in April did I make it a letter of intent. Also this school seems especially receptive to updates/letters. But thanks for your input!

i embedded my LOI in my update so kinda worried they wont see it.....for those of you sent two LOI's to the same school what was different??! Were you listing new reasons for the school?
If they read the letter they saw it.

Yw. Just out of curiosity, are there any other schools that seemed receptive?

If you’re worried about them putting something you write on file just call (and most likely leave a voicemail). I did this to one of my WL schools and they called back and gave me some info that was useful. I just asked about any predicted WL movement and feedback for the next cycle (apparently AAMC stops schools from giving WL applicants feedback if they’re still active on the list)! You can still ask about that tho it might be school to school.

Thanks! The problem is that they're only working on email still (the phone just re-directs to email). But those two points are exactly what I want to ask!
