Hi guys! I am in the MATCH this year for a SA rotating internship. Thought I’d start this thread since MATCH results come out in less than 2 weeks! Who knows, maybe a couple of us may match to the same place!

I am interested in Cardio and IM! I applied mainly to the northeast area :)

What specialties is everyone interested in/ what made you interested in applying to internships/residencies?

Goodluck to everyone! I hope everyone gets MATCHED!

Pursuing surgery. I knew coming into vet school I wanted to do that, but I spent a long time trying to convince myself that I would be happy in a less brutal service. But no....I want to cut all the things forever. I applied only east coast, with the exception of Texas A&M.

More nervous about the Match than I was NAVLE results, TBH...

That was me with IM! It’s always been IM for me... then I took a cardio rotation and fell inlove so now I’m at a crossroads and hopefully I figure out before I start an internship...

Surgery is bad ass though. You sound like a person that can live on the OR! Are you from the east coast? I’m from Boston! Did you only apply to academia or private as well?

TBH, I can’t decide which is worse... NAVLE or MATCH lol... maybe because ive always been a horrible standardized test taker (bomber SATs and GREs) so I think for me the NAVLE was scarier but luckily I passed the NAVLE LOL

You got this!!! You will match !

Hopefully! :) Also don't put too much pressure on yourself to decide on Cardio vs. IM prior to starting an internship. A few of my internmates last year were between two things when they started the internship but by the time Match came around they had figured out which direction they wanted to go in!

Thanks So much!!! I feel like I’m leaning towards cardio more but IM still is an interest! Glad I have more time to decide than I thought!

I’m from Baltimore and have spent most of my US time on the east coast. Most of the places I looked at are at least close to cities. I mostly ranked academia but also included several of the bigger private practices as well (Friendship, AMC, etc). How about you?

Good luck to everyone in the match. This time of year still gives me anxiety even though it has been years since my last match...hang in there!

I actually applied to Missouri! Unfortunately couldn't chat with any past/current interns so don't know much about the program haha oops..

Canadian student also chasing that radiology dream :xf:. Not the strongest GPA-wise so ranked a bunch of places (private and academia) in both the USA and Canada, but mostly limited to programs I heard good things about, had a radiology presence, and also took Canadian students since a surprising amount stopped doing that recently :< preferably will stay in Canada but also thought this might be the best time for me to live in a completely new city and experience different cultures/practices, so ranking was a bit hard haha!

Cool! I was born and raised in Boston. I ranked academia the highest but like you also ranked big private practices high as well such as AMC and Angell-Boston. Hoping to land in MA! Are you specifically wanting to land an internship in a certain area? Baltimore perhaps?

I wanted to intern on the east coast, preferably in/near cities with a major airport. I try to travel as much as possible, so that was important to me. And nope! I have no interest in staying in Baltimore (and there are practically no competitive internships in that area anyway) so I'm willing to move where the spots are. Do you want to stay in Boston?

Hey! I can answer any questions that I can about the internship program since I’ve built relationships with past and current interns here!

Applying for SA Rotating! Mostly all in New England, and private practices only as at this point I don't plan on specializing and want to go into GP after.

Traveling is amazing! I can’t wait until I am able to travel a lot again! Yes, I’d like to be close to family so ideally, I’d like to do my internship at Tufts vet school, Tufts VET specialty hospital or Angell-Boston. Those are my tops! Did you apply to any of these places?

Nice!! Internships are great for more clinical experience regardless if you plan on specializing or not!!

Hah haha that’s a hard no.
My top 4 were Upenn, Ohio, UF, and Friendship in DC. I would really be ecstatic with any of those, so fingers crossed!

Is there a reason you don't want to start earning a better paycheck right away if you are wanting to go GP? I am so very thankful that I went right into practice, and you really do learn quite quickly if you are scared, especially if you find a great job that has good mentors. :)

I mean that seems like a loaded question, but I want the wide range of cases, lots of experience fast, the ability to learn more from specialists in various fields, and somewhere that's built for new graduates to learn together as an intern class. Trust me, at this point I've thought a lot about it.

It's not a loaded question. It is a very practical question as some folks feel like they need an internship for structured learning, but I am saying that you get that from going straight into practice as well. I also take on ER relief work to make sure I see even more cases. I'm glad you've thought about it, but wanted to make sure that it really isn't as necessary as some may think. :)

Glad I am not the only impatient one!! I log into VIRMP quite often as if magically the results will be there before 2/10 :playful: Same compulsion behavior I had for NAVLE results haha!

So every year the night before Match day the VIRMP sends out an email reminding you that results come out the next day, AS IF WE FORGOT. But every year the email gives me a low-key heart attack so just a warning for everyone that hasn’t been through this before haha

I won't be applying for internships until next cycle, but one of the private hospitals I'm considering is AMC. Does anyone know if it's feasible to live in NYC during an intense internship with a large dog?

i would think that might be challenging, depending on your amount of help and finances.

AMC offers an apartment for housing that is walking distance to the hospital for most of their interns, and I believe some of the residents... From what I've heard it is at a reasonable price compared to most of NYC, but unsure whether pets are allowed in the housing complex. They also increased their intern salary this year, so have a look at the VIRMP listing.

They increased the salary to $32,000, which I think is appalling. The VCA rotating internships in California pay $54,000. I can't imagine it's more expensive to live in California than NYC. I'm making $27,000 in an academic rotating internship in the Midwest, and my rent is $500 monthly.

Also (and I interviewed with AMC this year and explicitly asked this):

Housing is NOT guaranteed, but is first come, first serve. They will try to accommodate, but last year they did not have enough space for their entire intern class. The emails I received during the interview process said that if you do not live in the AMC building, you still are expected to be within 20 minutes on-call of the hospital.

That's good to know, thanks. I'm considering doing an externship there to get a better sense of how the current interns make it work. But the housing situation does worry me.

it worried me a lot too, which is why I ranked it much lower. Also, and I can’t remember exactly when this is, they will be soon having a year where they don’t take interns while they plan/complete another hospital expansion. Just FYI!

I ranked AMC lower as well because of this... not a struggle I want to combat.... but I guess if matched there I won’t have a choice....

Just signed into VIRMP and there is a message saying they are currently completing the match... two more days y’all!! Best of luck to every one of you and hope everyone gets matched somewhere they like!

I don’t actually believe it can take two weeks to apply their algorithm, but you do you, VIRMP.

Honestly, I'd imagine that they double and triple check everything to make sure there have been no mistakes. Finalizing and sending out the result with an error would be disastrous for so many reasons..

I’d hope it would Take that amount of time to make sure as many people possible get matched somewhere!

I'm gonna be a radiologist and I matched to my first choice!!!! :D I hope Match worked out for everyone this year!!!
