2022-2023 UT Southwestern (UTSW)

It’s so annoying cause like the mid-level schools like utmb and a&m and such didn’t give me interviews but the three hardest schools in Texas did, so I feel like I’m under-qualified for these three schools but I don’t have any safety schools to fall back on. Anybody else in the same situation? 🥹

I see that as indicative of the fact there's something in your app that makes you a standout candidate. It's all about perspective! But, I do feel where you're coming from, as it feels better to interview everywhere and increase the odds of one acceptance than to be coveted by the elite schools but worry about how they'll view you. I think you'll be good, though!

I feel especially on edge because I definitely didn’t think I would be in the running at top schools, but have interviewed at UTSW, Dell, and Long and will be interviewing for Baylor soon. I was expecting more invites on the Lubbock/UH/RGV spectrum (which I do have some). I feel like I had accepted I would probably have to move to a smaller city/less desirable geography for med school, and had made my peace with that…. And then all these top schools tossed me a grain of hope and I’ve been simping over those tiny grains ever since. It was almost easier not to have the hope than to have interviewed and be anxious about getting in to one of these “top” schools.

“simping” 🤣🤣🤣 so relatable

This is so real!

I literally feel the exact same way! This application cycle has been so wild

LM of 76 with IS makes one eligible for all schools in Texas. In your case, they probably would have accepted 70 with lots of points for the mental health experience which can go a looooong way in the health profession.

You are in contention for all of the bigger schools. Very hard for a school like Dell which is such a small school and to start off they only interview candidates that bring some thing different to the small pool they can admit so most everyone they interview have something.

Thank you!! I am legit so incredibly happy. I’ve been able to visit both and I absolutely fell in love with UTSW.
You have GOT to eat at Scottie’s. It’s a food station near UTSW and Parkland. They serve GREAT chicken wings to die for. Just go in the daytime. The area around UTSW is bad and pretty rough.

I will! Thanks for the recommendation!

Thank you @skeptastic and @chicandtoughness for your kind words. I will keep up the faith 💜

Does anyone have a grasp on how common it is to prematch in a wave much later in the cycle than one's interview at UTSW? From previous cycles, it doesn't seem too implausible. But like ... why would someone not prematch immediately but prematch later? What changes about UTSW's assessment of a candidate besides UTSW getting better resolution of the remaining candidates in the application pool against whom to compare them? Do letters of interest/intent/post-interview updates do anything? Does UTSW even accept any of those?

Also, re: the prevailing understanding that UTSW is "prematch-heavy"—what does that mean? 95% prematches, 5% matches? 80% prematches, 20% matches?

I think if we think too hard about the black box of admissions we’ll end up in a nice white room with soft white walls wearing a very tight jacket.

UTSW would fill most of the seats by the match date. So people would have to drop in favor of some other schools in order to have spots during match. Most of those openings will need to come from people choosing Baylor, Dell etc over UTSW (i.e. the other simp schools @chicandtoughness referred to).

anytime I meet someone from a t20, I will now be referring to their institution as a simp school.

Anyone know if UTSW gives pre II R’s? Feeling the same way as a lot of people here not getting invited to mid/low TX schools after a Baylor interview but also no love from UTSW, McGovern or Long 🙁
UTMB was the first big school to send Pre II Rs yesterday.

I believe UTSW sends pre II Rs once their interview dates are filled up. Someone posted last night saying they received a II for January 7th. Unless someone can tell us that is the last date, there may still be some IIs to come.

I can't recall with precision, but I'm pretty sure there was a date after January 7th when I scheduled my date.

How did you go that far out? @MCAThiccy said his is on 3rd?
It is. Maybe he logged in and the slots were filled up. That means that the next round of IIs may be the last round.

I may have misread @skeptastic's post as having picked a date after 7th but sounds like he just noticed during the selection of a date.

Appreciate the love! I'm guessing Thiccy and I initially felt as naked and afraid as you, but we have certainly had some success as far as II's and now A's (especially Thiccy!!). Here's hoping for the best for you this cycle. Your time is coming! And it looks like you've interviewed at a few fantastic schools already, so word UP to that!!
