2025-2026 Virginia Tech Secondary Essay Prompts: (all new this year except #2)
(400 words - not characters - limit each)
  1. Who is a fictional character that is similar to you? Describe a time when you embodied that character.
  2. What can a recovering addict who didn't finish high school teach their physician?
  3. Describe a time (not related to research) when you were told you had done something wrong. How has the experience changed you?

If I am not published in anything but still participated in undergraduate research, should I just write N/A here?

That's what I did. I only have a poster presentation from my research, so I assumed that didn't count.
 
For the publications question, can we put publications that are in preparation and will be submitted within the next few months? Or do you think it is limited to papers that have been officially accepted/submitted?

only the submitted/accepted ones. Presumably you talked about participating in these research projects in your primary app.

For #3, would a lab tech experience be too closely related to research? I was being paid and not participating in research.
My plan B for this question would be a story from my freshman year dorm, so it wld have nothing to do with professional experiences.

For what it's worth I did a personal situation and got an II, so it definitely doesn't need to be professional. I just made sure to reflect on how I grew from it
