Not quite sure why, but Galway has never been a part of ABP and doesn't seem to take as many international students...although I don't know if it has ties with malaysian schools. All colleges get money from the government, I'm not sure how they've managed finances for so long without that much international help. Anyway, NUIG wouldn't be particularly small -nnot as big as the Dublin schools, but it's not that small. It has good facilities and a beautiful campus.
Regarding the competitiveness - yeah, people always said that you should have the same qualifications as you would if trying to get into a US school. I think they take a more holistic approach somehow to you as an applicant (although most not requiring an interview - maybe a lot of it is PS and CV) than having grade cutoffs. Although this is a bit curious, considering that there is a definite cutoff mark for the Irish students - a very high one.
