Accepted, Fall 2011!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey all,

Last night I noticed on my JHU application that a decision has been reached! However I cannot find the link they tell you to click.... based on this message:

The Admissions Committee has reached a decision on your application. Please click the link below under Decision Status to view the decision (if there is no link - please contact Admissions at ...). ...

I emailed them, but no reply yesterday. Has anyone else had this occur? I applied to the MSPH program.

I know a couple of other people received acceptances to Emory around the time I did (12/9)...have you guys received your packets in the mail yet? They said about 3 weeks which was just last Thursday, and I know there have been a couple of holidays, but I really want to look at it! The reason I wonder is that when I applied I was in the Peace Corps, but now I'm an RPCV, the first school I got accepted to accidentally sent the packet to my Peace Corps site (I had put that address was only valid through Oct 15, 2010, but we are all guilty of not reading the fine print on everything right?)...I just want to make sure that something like that didn't happen again but I don't want to call and harass them if it's just still in the mail...so if anyone has received theirs let me know about how long it took from acceptance if you don't mind!

Thanks! 🙂

2 for 2 so far!!! I know that others have gotten into more prestigious schools, but I'm happy with where I'm at right now. 🙂

GRE: 540 V, 680 Q, 4.5 AW
GPA: 3.34, recent undergrad
SOPHAS mailed: 12/8/10, but last LOR submitted 12/16/10
Programs: Epi, Global Epi, or Infectious Disease Epi where applicable
Acceptances: Tulane, GW
Rejections: none yet
Still waiting: BU, Columbia, Emory, Yale

Hey awapi,
I heard from emory a few days after you and I have not gotten anything in the mail yet. I'm thinking it all got really held up over the holidays.

Awapi- Just a heads up, Emory was completely shut down last week-as in no staff, offices closed etc. I would not count last week into your calculations.

Program: Global health
Acceptances: Tulane, Emory
Rejections: None
Waiting: UA, USF

So who else is torn between attending Tulane or Emory?
Hey Seci.

I was also accepted to Emory GH program and Tulane IHD program and am completely torn as what program to select. They both have there pros and cons but I can't seem to figure out which one I am leading towards more.

What about you?

Hey Awapi-

I was also accepted to Tulane and Emory and saw that you were too. Have you made a decision yet as to which program you will attend? I'm having a hard time coming up with a decision they both seem really great. Also, were did you serve for PC? I'm currently a PCV in Mongolia!

I just got my 1st acceptance from Emory's BSHE program! So hyped right now haha. Here're my stats:

GPA: 3.36, Biology major
GRE: 460V 760Q 4.0W
Accepted: Emory (BSHE)
Rejected: Dartmouth
Waiting: USC, NYU and Yale

Had a few part-time experiences within campus (eg. peer advisors, teaching and research assistants) and going to work in UN for a couple months

Good luck to all of us!

My stats :

Undergrad gpa : 3.85
Masters (in chemical biology) gpa : 3.8

Hi olse! I served in the Philippines, I just COS'd in November so we shared the same side of the world for a while 🙂. Small world!

Regarding Tulane vs Emory...I'm having a hard time as well, I got accepted to the same programs you did, IHD and Global Health respectively. I was dead set on Tulane about 4 months ago (it was my country director's alma mater for her MPH), but I'm leaning towards Emory now. Tulane's vibe is more my style, but Emory's reputation and connections to the CDC (my dream employer) can't be ignored. I emailed a girl at Emory and she ended up calling me and talking to me for a couple of hours about the program there and she swayed me their way. I'm going to visit both schools with my mom in February and will probably make a concrete decision after that, but I'd say 89.5% to Emory  .

I'm planning on doing MI, so another PC service with my MPH. Emory's program is 4 semesters instead of 3 which would make me available in May for service, I would really like to go to Africa this time and although programs leave throughout the year, the bulk of the Africa programs leave in the summer, so that's also another plus for Emory since it raises the odds of a placement there.

When do you COS? I'm guessing August-ish 2011 unless you are an extended PCV since Mongolia comes in around June right? Haha, let me know if you want me to ask any questions when I visit the two schools for you, I'd be happy to pass along any info I get! Good luck with your decision and let me know what you do!

Congrats Chriskyk!!!

I'm kind of the same as Awapi, I was seriously considering Tulane as obviously both schools have plenty of faculty with my similar interests (vector-borne and STDs) but the CDC is way too big of an incentive for me so I'm certain I'm going to Emory.

New Orleans definitely has a great culture and nightlife so I'm sure I won't have as much fun in Atlanta but I suppose I can catch up after I graduate.

Has anyone received the acceptance packet from Emory yet? I got my acceptance via OPUS, but no physical letter yet.

I've been lurking for a few weeks now, ever since I submitted my applications, but I just wanted to say hello, congratulations to those with acceptances and good luck to those still waiting! Any other applicants to Peace Corps Masters International programs floating around out there? I applied to UW Global Health PCMI track and Hopkins MSPH in International Health/PCMI.

Others to which I have applied:

UNC MsPH to PhD in Health Behavior and Health Ed.
Berkeley Health and Social Behavior (apparently they have a pretty low acceptance rate, so we'll see)
Columbia MPH in Sociomedical Sciences

All with secondary concentrations/specialty areas/whatever each respective school calls them in global health.

I submitted my SOPHAS somewhat late in the game, I fear (the Dec. 1 deadline for Berkeley and UW) and submitted my other applications just before or on the priority deadlines, so I don't necessarily expect to hear anything for a while....just wanted to stop lurking and officially join the waiting game.

Nicapy - I haven't gotten mine for Emory yet...I got an email yesterday for accepted students that said -

"If it has been more than three weeks (domestic students) or six weeks (international students) since you have viewed your admissions decision on OPUS and you have not received an admissions package, please email [email protected]."

It's been right at 3 weeks for me, I'm going to let it go another week because of the holidays, but then I'm going to contact them.

Symphony - I'm doing MI as well! I've been accepted at Tulane and Emory for it and am waiting to hear from Boston University...I'm a returned Peace Corps Volunteer and just wanted to encourage you to definitely do it, it was the best experience I've had and I'm looking forward to doing it again 🙂.

Good luck everyone!

nope...I emailed them and they told me to consider the decision letter on OPUS as official. They said they were currently updating the information they sent to accepted students. After that they will send admission packets to us.

I must have missed the earlier post of yours talking about the Phillipines. 🙄 Thanks for repeating the info anyway. Congrats on Emory and Tulane! It's good to hear that you loved it so much you're going back for more! I might PM you with more Peace Corps questions later in the year if one of those programs decides to let me in. Also, good luck with Boston!

I received my Tulane admissions packet about a week after they told me I was in, but the letter was dated almost a week before that date. I hope that helps.

Hey Epi2013

They told me 12/20 that I was accepted and that I would be receiving a admissions packet at the beginning of the year, but still nothing. When were you notified of your acceptance. I know it's still early I'm just anxious!

I called them on 12/20 to make sure my application was complete and was told that I was accepted and they would be mailing my packet the next day. I got it on the 27th (so there were a few days of no mail service for the holidays) and the letter was dated 12/14. Did you receive an email? The only reason I even found out was because I called them.

Epi2013,

I also found out I was accepted because I e-mailed them asking if they received my application. They then e-mailed me back saying that I was accepted and should be receiving a packet soon.

when were your apps mailed out?
mine were mailed out on the 5th of jan, and i have not even gotten an OPUS id yet.

My apps were mailed 12/8, but my last letter of rec wasn't in until the 16th. I have had an OPUS ID since 12/20ish but I do not have a decision for Emory yet.

As I mentioned above, my desicion for JHU was made a few days ago but wasn't visible online, causing me much agony! Funny how you see, The committee has reached a decision regarding your application, and you think, oh, no.

But they sent me an acceptance letter yesterday via email! My first acceptance! 😀

I applied to the MSPH program in Pop Fam and Rep Hlt.

Has anyone received the admissions packet in the mail from Tulane yet?

I received my Tulane admissions packet about a week after they told me I was in, but the letter was dated almost a week before that date. I hope that helps.

I also emailed Tulane to see if my packet was complete and they told me I was in. I emailed them on 11/9 and they said my decision letter had been "typed up" on 11/4. It took almost two weeks for me to receive the acceptance packet (from 11/9). Then I received another, identical acceptance packet about a month later on like 12/15, haha.

Good luck!

My apps were mailed out in early December. I received my acceptance from Tulane on 12/20 and from Emory on 1/4.

Once Emory receives your application it should only be a few days before they assign you an OPUS login

Hi Leelah congratulations! I am actually applying to the same department at JHSPH and was wondering when you submitted your application. I haven't submitted mine yet but should be soon. Thanks.

In case anyone was curious about USF I just got my acceptance letter today.

Hi Rachelbds,

SOPHAS mailed my application to UTSPH on 11/23/10. I never received any type of confirmation that they received my application. I called last week ( 1/5/11) and was told that they have received my application and that it was complete. The rep also informed me that UTSPH will officially start reviewing applications on 1/14/11 and would review every Friday after that date. If you have been accepted, you will receive an email on the same Friday in which your application is reviewed. If not, you will receive a rejection letter in the mail within a week of the decision. Hope this helps. I feel like I have been waiting forever so I hope that they get around to my application on this upcoming Friday. 🙂 Good luck.

I posted my stats a while back, but here is my update on acceptances

Accepted: Emory (Global Health), Yale (SBS with Global Health concentration), University of Michigan (HPM and HBHE)

Waiting: University of Washington, Berkeley, UNC, Columbia, NYU (gloabl health dual degree with Wagner), Hunter College, Harvard, BU.

I obviously haven't heard about financial aid, but Michigan's HPM department is making a tempting merit aid offer. I'm feeling really lucky so far!

Best wishes to everyone.

When did you hear from Michigan?

HPM from michigan let me know unofficially after my (Skype) interview at the end of December and officially via e-mail on Jan 3rd. My HBHE e-mail arrived this Friday - the 7th of Jan.

Congratz on your acceptances PHprospect! May I ask when you received your acceptance for Yale and was it through envelope or email?

Yale's letter came via postal mail and arrived the 24th. I also just got an e-mail from them to all admitted applicants saying that for those who turn in their financial aid applications early, they will begin offering aid packages at the end of February.

Congrats indeed! I think you're the first Yale-acceptee to post here. Good job!

Hey all,

Finally let my nerves get the best of me and decided to create an account... has anyone gotten any rejections from JH? My application was complete and submitted on Nov. 1st and the 8-week turnover point has come and gone... anyone else in the same situation? Im making myself paranoid that they are snail-mailing me a rejection... 🙁

Hey thanku ssoo much fr that info.....so lets hope we get to see each other this fall... fingers crossed...i really hope i get acceptd to utsph.btw wat r ur stats n wat div did u apply to?

haven't heard from anyone yet, but decided to post my stats to get some input:
Undergrad GPA: 3.14 (Neuroscience) upward trend
Grad GPA: 3.6 (PH courses) from unaccredited institution
GRE: 500V 720Q 4.5W
Programs: MPH Epidemiology (neuropsych)
Experience: 2 years doing research in schizophrenia, started a community-based organization in Uganda during undergrad (still working on it), short term volunteer work in Nicaragua, 2-3 years doing aging research undergrad.
Schools: JHU (completed 1/3), Columbia (12/28), UPitt, Boston, GWU (all 3 received on 1/7)

I'm kind of aiming a little too high by applying to JHU and Columbia with such low GPA and GRE scores, but i'm hoping the experience the excellent recs will off-set that.

What do you guys think? Or should I have retaken the GRE?

Thanks for the input

The dean of admissions at Mailman personally told me they were not sending responses until early February, so you don't have to worry about Columbia until then.
