Accepted, Fall 2011!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also wanted to add that all of Emory was closed all week until about 12pm today. There was a "major storm" that hit Atlanta and had everything closed down until today (literally-even starbucks wasn't open for two days!)

Has anyone else NOT heard from Emory? It was 6 weeks on Wednesday since I got the "your application has been forwarded to your department" email and I am starting to wonder what's up. There was an acceptance on this thread from my dept (HPM) from someone who seems to have gotten the application forward email later then I so I'm really starting to wonder what's up.

Has anyone applied to UMass Amherst? I was recently informed that my application is incomplete because i need to complete a supplemental application. Their deadline is Feb 1st and they will be sending me directions on how to complete this application in the next couple of weeks? Has anyone else experienced this or know what the supplemental application requires??

I got this e-mail too and nothing yet. Maybe it is a GA/TA application? No clue. But I haven't heard anything and I submitted my UMass stuff with schools that had much earlier deadlines.

Biological Sciences Major at UC Irvine
3.15 cum GPA; (2 year upward trend on deans list)
1 non-first authorship in FRBM
Presented at a student research symposium (did research for 2 years)
GRE: 530V/620Q/5.0AW
Work: Executive Board for my club 2 years (president last year) dealing with health promotion, RA (resident advisor) for 2 years and worked throughout college.

Accepted: Ohio State University (Health Behavior and Health Promotion)
Rejections: N/A
Waiting on: UCI, UCD, SDSU, UPitt, Drexel

Does anyone have any details on OSU? Now that I have one acceptance, I can relax a little bit 😀

I got into OSU too! Have you heard any more about the accepted students days? I want to go but I don't know if I can because of work deadlines. Boo.

All I got was that Admit Recommended email. I guess I just have to look in the mail for their packet. Have you heard anything about OSU? What other schools are you applying for?

Hmm maybe it varies by department! (I got invited to the Epi department)
It is just one tiny blurb at the end so I totally missed it in the excitement of getting the e-mail.

And as for schools I did not apply to many - I have specific research interests and it sort of limited me.

I think it was for all PubHealth. The Admit Recommended email had a blurb at the bottom too with feb and march as visit days. I didn't hear any more outside of that though. So you're Epi? Nice. What other schools are you applying for and what were your stats?

Oh ok! I misread your comment (reading this via iPod is sort of tough!)

A lot of people from my undergrad read this forum so I feel a little awkward posting stats... But they were similar to yours (I was an RA too!)

WOO! 😀 Well, if the ultimate decision should be that we're both going to Ohio, we'll need to get in touch 😀

Has nyone heard from ut houston.......m kinda gettin really skeptical....😕😕😕:scared:

Was Global Health your first choice? I think you have a stronger chance and Yale and Columbia. I think Harvard and JHU weigh standardized tests slightly greater than Yale and Columbia.

Global Health was my first choice. Well, If you attended the webinar late last year that was organized by Harvard, George Washington, Yale and one other University (can't remember now). A question was asked about GRE scores and the general answers that all the schools gave was that public health is a quantitative discipline and therefore, quantitative scores are the single most important score they are looking at. Before applying to Harvard, I called the assistant director of admissions, and she said that for international students Harvard considers TOEFL scores more than the verbal score. They said TOEFL is more objective and they are looking for a cut of 95 for TOEFL ibt. When I visited Columbia's Mailman school of public health, last year, and met with someone there and she told me same, quantitative score preference and TOEFL preference. Although the average score for Harvard and JHU for succesful applicants is 1350 - 1400, but overall they consider all aspects of the application and the applicants potential. I am not ruling out getting admissions from them. I know a lady who got into JHU with a score of 990 GRE. Its possible, these school looks for a other stuff.

I don't think there's anything to be worried about. One of the professors I talked to told me that they won't even look at the applications until after their first deadline, which is Feb. 1st. I'm sure we'll start to hear some news soon. Good Luck!

One of my friends applied just a couple of weeks after I did to the Global Environmental Health department. I got my acceptance on Dec 9 from Global Health and she hasn't heard yet but I would be really surprised if she doesn't get in...I wouldn't worry too much about it yet, with the holidays and then being closed for inclement weather most of last week I doubt they've had the time to catch up on application reviews yet. Keep checking OPUS, they posted an "enrollment decision" and an "enrollment fee" form for me to fill out in my "to do" list before they even posted my decision letter...you'll probably find out there first!

Good luck!!

I heard some of that too, and from last year's acceptance thread it seems like many people had received notice by this time😕 The school's FAQ section on the website says;

"When can I expect a decision from the Admissions Committee?
Provided your application and materials were submitted on time, they will be reviewed within 90 days of the application deadline. The decision of the Committee will be mailed to you as well as updated in UTLINK."

I guess "within 90 days" could mean 90 before or 90 after😕😕

What program/track did you apply for?

Anyone get any news from UPitt yet? Seems like they had a lot more acceptances this time last year as well.

Wow. Totally different info from the same website. Here's the link to the prospective student FAQ page: http://www.sph.uth.tmc.edu/prospective-students/faqs/ Look under the admissions criteria section.

I'm applying to HPBS, SOPHAS mailed my app on 12/15 so considering the holidays, I probably have a few more weeks to go before I hear anything.

Decision on SOPHAS? Usually an e-mail is sent.....

That's what I thought too, so I was surprised when she said that. I guess we can just wait and see what happens...check e-mails and SOPHAS.

Well, maybe this post got buried since no one else has posted acceptances on it, but I got my first acceptance notification and wanted to share! I'll try to list all relevant info below:

GPA - 3.4 (3.6 upper division) - Major: Environmental Science
GRE - 620 V, 730 Q, 5.0 AW
I've been out of school for about 5 years, I worked for an environmental management company as the lead administrator (a lot of work, responsibility, and stress)...I then did Peace Corps in a non-health related sector, however, because my sector, Coastal Resource Management, was flexible and designed for the volunteer to build his or her own projects, I was able to work environmental health into almost all of my primary and secondary projects through wat/san and general environmental health education. I also did secondary projects in HIV/AIDS, violence against women, and reproductive health. This really fueled my desire to continue a career in international public health and is what I focused on in my personal statement. Outside of Peace Corps I've done a lot of additional volunteer work, I was president of a couple of clubs in college and of the Volunteer Advisory Committee at my Peace Corps post.

I submitted all my info to Sophas on about September 28, everything was processed by Sophas and completed by October 13 (about 2 weeks and a couple of days) and my applications were sent out on October 18. Unfortunately, I took my GRE on Sept 10 and was notified by Sophas that they were having trouble receiving scores so my GRE score went out to the schools on October 25.

I received notification that my acceptance letter from Tulane was typed up on November 3rd!! I'm really excited about this one!

I also received an email from Boston University saying that they are still processing Spring applications.

Accepted:
Tulane - International Health and Development - Nov 3

Waiting on:
Emory and Boston University

I hope this helps anyone who is waiting and/or nervous about qualifications, I didn't know what the competition would be like and was really prepared to hear just about anything from the schools I applied to, it's such a relief to get an acceptance, especially from a top choice school, I hope that you all get the same feeling soon if you haven't already! Good luck everyone!![/

sigh.. nuff' said. first decision= rejection from UMich

makes me scared because they wrote "circumstance" ... lol.. I wonder if my LOR professor said something strange. but anyway... expected because of my low stats :/ 3.1 gpa 1330 GRE

Did you interview recently?

@c504 no interview before rejection :/

I got the same (poorly-worded) e-mail, so unfortunately, you can't draw anything from the rejection letter itself. If you are curious as to why you weren't admitted though, I'd highly encourage you to contact MSPH Admissions. Admissions officers are sometimes willing to tell you why they rejected you, which may help you later on (ex. don't ask Professor X for a letter of rec). I wish you the best of luck with the rest of your apps! 🙂

Pinkyellow- My first letter was a rejection...then a whole bunch of acceptances. One less school just makes it easier when you have to decide between schools later on! 🙂

So, has anyone heard back from BU for Fall of 2011? I was so caught up in my Tulane and Emory acceptances that I hadn't thought about how I haven't seen anything in the mail from BU.

I received an email from them on Nov 10 saying that my application was complete but:
"We are currently reviewing applications for Spring 2011. As soon as the Review Committee is ready for the Fall 2011 applications, we will let you know. Your application is not missing any materials and will be among the first to be reviewed for the fall semester. "

I never received any further communication letting me know that the "Committee is ready for Fall 2011 applications" - I didn't really think that I would, but I thought I might have gotten a decision by now.

Good luck everyone!

Acceptances: Tulane IHD - 11/4/10
Emory Global Health (Infectious Diseases) - 12/9/10

Rejections: None

Waiting on: Boston University

For Tulane applicants- how long did it take to hear an admissions decision and was notification sent via email or snail mail? It seems like they review the applications very quickly.

Mine only took 4 or 5 days from when they received my completed application...of course I applied really early (late October) so they may not have had many applications to go through and lots of open spots to fill.

I found out when I sent them an email about a week after Sophas mailed my application which just said something like: "Sophas informed me that my completed application was mailed out on October 27th, I wanted to follow up with your department to make sure that you all had received everything needed to complete my file at Tulane."

They emailed me back and told me that it was complete and that I had already been accepted, it took a few weeks for me to receive my packet from them in the mail, so if I hadn't emailed then it would have been 4 or 5 weeks instead of 4 or 5 days.

Good luck!

I also applied to BU for Fall and received that same email on Nov 30th. But I have not heard anything since. I wonder what's up with BU.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one 🙂. I emailed them today to make an address change for admissions correspondence...since I was referencing that I took the opportunity to nonchalantly ask about when those decisions might start coming out...I'll let you all know if I hear anything back!

I too have been waiting on BU for quite a while, but not as long as you. My application was not forwarded to their committee until 12/20/10 due to my 3rd letter of rec not being submitted until a month and a half after my app was complete otherwise. The email I received said it would be 4-6 weeks and that I would be notified by snail mail. It was 4 weeks for me yesterday and I guess I'm just getting impatient after hearing from some other schools.

I also haven't heard from Emory so I called them today and was told it could be another 3 weeks due to the holidays and them being closed last week. It's been 5 weeks with them already 🙁 and I haven't heard anything about it being forwarded to my second choice department so it could be forever.

Accepted: GW, Tulane (Epi)
Waiting: BU, Columbia, Emory, Yale
Rejections: none yet

Thanks Awapi, please do share if you hear anything back. I was under the impression that BU was on Rolling Admissions? Hmm..anyways, i guess we'll find out eventually!

Undergrad GPA: 3.63 Health Psychology
GRE: 1260
Other: Research Assistant for 3 years, worked in a hospital in various capacities for the past 4 summers, presented research at a conference twice (going on three times!)
SOPHAS Mailed on: 12/08
JHU: Submitted in November but not listed as complete until 1/11, not sure what happened there
Columbia: Same as above, submitted in November but not listed as complete until recently
UNC: Completed in late November

Accepted: GW
Waiting on: JHU, UNC, Columbia, Harvard, UofM, Yale, BU, UIC, LLU and UMass

Should I be worried that I've only heard back from GW so far? Argh! The waiting/obsessive e-mail checking is driving me crazy!

Has anyone heard back from Emory recently or heard that their app was forwarded to their second choice dept? I know they were closed last week, but I feel like someone should be hearing from them.

I just saw on SOPHAS that I am admitted to UT Houston. You should check SOPHAS if you applied there...I am suprised I didn't get an email or something.

I got an email back from BU, she said that they are completely done with Spring 2011 reviews (I kind of figured that was a given since it's January 19)...she said that the Fall decisions should be out soon but that she couldn't give me a date...I guess that means it'll probably be another couple of weeks at least!

Good luck!

Acceptances: Tulane IHD - 11/4/10

Ok...I guess will have to wait and watch......Thanks a bunch..good luck to u

For those who are waiting to hear from BU....I called them today to see what the deal is and they said that they are almost done with the 1st batch of decisions so whoever is in that batch will be hearing soon. They didn't give me a date, but that's encouraging. They also said that mine was in that first batch and I didn't receive the app complete email until 12/20/10 so anyone that received it before me should also be in that batch.

Instead of stalking I thought I'd actually post something for once

Yeah I went a little nuts applying to programs, but why not. Excited to hear back from the rest!

WOO! 😀 Well, if the ultimate decision should be that we're both going to Ohio, we'll need to get in touch 😀

Did you get the acceptance in a tiny envelope?! Good thing I already knew I got in ...
(just a heads-up to everyone else that envelope size does not matter! this was a tiny little one!)
And attending their program relies totally on funding. I am not from Ohio so it'd be pretty pricey out-of-state.

Oh and another heads-up for the BU crowd. I had a friend that applied there last year and they take a while so do not fret! Just make sure your application is complete and wait patiently. (And that your GRE scores were sent to the right college.. My friend sent them to some other place within BU and they definitely did not end up at SPH. And then she had to pay up the *** to have them expressed over) Also they do not really fund MPH people amazingly (unless there is some weird grant or exception). They have a small merit scholarship but apparently she is going part-time and working full-time on-campus. Then she gets tuition essentially waved.

I didn't get the letter yet (CA so maybe thats why) but I got the email....today I got another email about on-campus housing. Out of state student too so it IS going to be pricey.
