Accepted, Fall 2011!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi Annalise, I applied to Health and Social Behavior and I have seen someone already accepted to the program and I have not gotten any email from them. Someone wrote on this forum earlier and said that he visited Harvard and the rumor flying around the school is that they will be rolling out admission decisions every Friday....the trend so far has been so. This means we will be expecting another batch this Friday.....Well I am freaking out myself, lets hope its either an acceptance or at worse a waitlist. So far we have not seen any rejection from Harvard on this thread and that is so so freaking out for those who have not heard. We will keep our fingers crossed.

I read about that rumor. I wonder if the first batch was primarily acceptances and the majority of the later batches are rejections? I hope not, but I'm not holding out hope because I don't want to be disappointed.

Good luck to you!

I have a question for all those who have been accepted to Harvard. Did any of you receive any financial aid, funding or scholarship with your letter of acceptance?

I remember worrying myself to death over the same thing last year. My experience is the following:

(1) HSPH tends to send out admissions decisions on 4-5 consecutive Fridays/Saturdays, starting in the middle of February

(2) The most important determinant for which weekend they inform you, is going to be the program and department to which you applied

(3) It may be true that a slightly higher proportion of the early decisions are admissions, but that effect is very small compared to the above.

(4) Most of the people who are in my MPH class (2010/2011) were notified of their admission in the middle of March (corresponding to 11th/12th of March in this cycle)

(5) Many students who were very anxious and thought they probably didn't have good enough stats, were admitted to the program

(6) If you haven't heard by March 19th, it's probably time to start worrying.

Send me a private message if you have any further questions...

No, I didn't yet. I read something online that said a letter re: funding should be sent out on the Tuesday following the admissions letter?? Not sure...

Your post is very reassuring, thank you for that information. I am the ultimate pessimist, but it is good to know that we still have a fighting chance. 🙂

Has anyone heard from Columbia or BU recently? I know I posted the same thing last week, but I thought they would be sending something out at least every 10 days or so. I'm also getting antsy because I'm trying to book airfare to visit the schools I'm most interested in, but I don't want to go visit somewhere before I have a decision. Thanks!

Epi2013: I asked BU about when a decision would be out (I applied Dec. 1) since my spring break is coming up in 5 days and I wanted to plan a visit. The woman said I most likely would NOT have a decision within 1.5 weeks (that was about a week ago) :/ So I'd assume BU won't be giving out any notifications until March... 🙁

Thanks for the update! Even if it means waiting, I'd rather know than not.

Thank you very much for this reassuring post. I was wondering, did you get financial aid information with your acceptance? Also, approximately how many students do they accept in each concentration? I am still waiting to hear from them and am trying to decide if I should send an e-mail to update with new awards/conference grants I received last month or should I just wait until end of March to hear from them.

I got my acceptance letter from BU today (it's dated February 11). I already accepted an offer from Minnesota, so hopefully my space at BU will go to someone else!

Oh sweet! what program did you apply to and when did you apply to BU?

I applied for the MPH in epi - oddly, the acceptance letter didn't mention anything about being accepted into the epidemiology program, just that I was accepted "as a candidate in the Master of Public Health degree program."

I was also offered a merit scholarship, but it didn't lower the cost of tuition enough to make me regret choosing UMn 🙂

I've been following the forum for a while now (creepy, I know) but thought I'd post now that I have one acceptance! Totally unexpected as my background is SO not health-geared so am thrilled =)

B.A. Political Science (3.34 GPA)
MSc. Media, Communications and Development (3.67 GPA)

Accepted: Tulane (Global Health Systems and Development)
Waiting: Emory, GWU, South Carolina, Boston University

Best of luck everyone! If anyone else has been accepted to the Tulane program feel free to PM me.

Anyone applied for PhD epidemiology at Hopkins? I am waiting for the result.

Hi all,

Congrats on all of the acceptances! 🙂

I applied to UCLA's Health Services department on 11/30, and received a 'your application is complete and is being reviewed' on 1/5. Since then, I've heard nothing.

Throughout January and February, I've seen many people on this thread state that they have been accepted into UCLA's Health Services program. Should I worry that I have not heard back? The wait is killing me! :scared:

Thanks + Best of luck to all,

-MPHOrthoSurg

Hey everyone!

Just got my acceptance letter from BU! It was postmarked February 16th FYI. Now I have the huge dilemma to choose between GWU- MHSA- Health Services Administration, BU- MPH/MA- Health Policy and Management, and Minnesota- Masters in Healthcare Administration with a partial scholarship! Anyone have any connections to these schools, or can mention anything about these programs? I'm looking to go into hospital administration or healthcare consulting!

Thanks!

Did you receive the email asking for more information by any chance?

Epi2013, I did not receive either emails about financial aid, or asking me to send more information about why I want to attend BU.

Ashleyleah15,
Did your status change on the Minnesota website when you were admitted? Or, did you receive your admittance via mail?

Pamo,

I received an email from Admissions when I got admitted, my status changed on the website, and I received an email providing a clip for admitted students about the program and student admitted day. Today, I received my formal acceptance letter from Minnesota with scholarship information. I found out about Minnesota on the 16th- the day after my interview that I got in.

Hope this helps!

Just got into UNC HBHE!! (Or rather, "recommended for admission". You know how it goes.)

In case anyone else is waiting on UNC, the email they sent included the following explanation: "This year, the Graduate School adopted a new admissions system and has been a bit delayed issuing official decisions." Hope this helps someone out there!

Congrats!!! Good to know. Was this for MPH? I applied MsPH to PhD, so I think the timing might be a little different, but it's good to know that the department is looking at applications now and that the delay is part of their new process and not necessarily a bad sign! Thanks for posting!

Congrats! That's great news. Would you mind sharing when you applied and/or your stats?

Thanks!

I just got into Tulane (epi), which was the 4th and final school I was waiting to hear on. I've already gotten into SLU (biosecurity), UT (epi, and in-state), and UPitt (infectious diseases). I'm most likely going to Pitt (going to visit in a couple weeks actually), though the idea of that price tag is continuing to eat away at me. :scared:

I just called them this morning and was told that the rest of the decisions will be out within a week. Apparently the final decision meeting is today... scary... My app was completed the first week of Nov so I figure I must be on the edge... 🙄

Congrats!!

In at Berkeley for MPH in Health and Social Behavior! I emailed the department to ask when a decision might be likely and explained that it was one of my top choices but that I had to make an early decision on another school, so I just wanted to get a feel for when theirs might be forthcoming (I didn't come out and ask for an expedited decision). I heard back within about 1.5 hours that I have been accepted and the formal notification is on its way soon! Soooooo excited to have the option of staying on the west coast, and the program just seems like a really great fit for my interests!

Good luck everybody!

Can those who were notified by Columbia of their admission decisions please indicate how and when Columbia contacted you?

My application has been submitted/completed since December 29 and when I contacted them last Friday, it was still under review. As of today, I still have not heard from them and I'm getting really anxious!

However, here's an update on my decisions:

Accepted: Emory (HP&M), UMichigan (EHS), UIC (HPA & Merit Scholarship), Boston University (HP&M & Merit Scholarship), UMDNJ (HS&P), UPitt (HP&M)

Waiting: Columbia

Rejected: Yale (I kind of anticipated this one...), UMD (I LOLed at this one)

Submitted Nov 1. Accepted via email Feb 9

Good Luck!

Submitted Dec. 1, Accepted Feb. 9 for Columbia
good luck! 🙂

AJ414 & MPH4life,

Thanks for letting me know...I guess I will have to wait this week through to see.

Were you notified through email or postal mail? Also, do you know when Columbia started releasing decisions and on what day(s) of the week they do so?

Hey there!

My app was submitted the day before Columbia's online deadline (Dec 1st? 15th? Can't remember). It was before they decided to give that deadline extension because apparently their online system had stopped working.

Around Jan 1st, I e-mailed them asking a few transcript related questions, and also why my app status was still "incomplete" even though I had everything in and they had received them all. An admin wrote back on Jan 5th, saying my app was indeed complete, and that it had been "forwarded for review". I sent them an updated transcript via PDF attachment on Jan 22nd, and on 24th she wrote back saying my file was complete. On Feb 9th I got an e-mail from the school saying a decision has been made, and I could view the letter via their online system.

Hope that helped!

Thanks, parapluie - This is indeed very helpful.

My application was actually submitted on December 15, but wasn't completed until December 29 due to a missing transcript I believe. However, I did contact the office on the 29th to actually confirm that my application was completed and under review and I was told it was. Now, I just find it really strange why I still have not heard from Columbia as many have back on February 9. :scared:

Don't panic yet! I got concerned on the 9th when everybody else was hearing from them and I hadn't yet. I called and asked about their schedule for notifying people and they said they don't do it daily but possibly more than once a week (as indeed they did, many people heard back on the 11th as well), and they should be finished notifying people by early March. Good luck!

Oh my gosh, congrats! That is AWESOME.
However, the fact that they have a decision ready for you and others, but are sitting on it is so silly. I mean, I'm assuming they weren't like 'damn, we have to look at that kid's stuff quickly' right after the email, haha.

If it makes you feel better daZ3d, my Columbia app was submitted 10/12/10, but my last letter of rec wasn't in until 12/1/10. I still haven't heard from them and although I was expecting a long wait, the fact that others started hearing 2 weeks ago makes me antsy. Did anyone hear from them last week?

Thanks Swaffles! About sitting on it....I thought that too, haha. Though the email came pretty quickly afterwards, so maybe they did do that. My other guess is that they have notifications ready to send out this week, or at least some of them, and mine was fairly accessible so they went ahead and told me. I already bugged the main admissions people last week and didn't hear back (which had me afraid that no news was bad news), so maybe they already had me on their radar as obnoxiously persistent.

Also I noticed on the grad cafe that somebody was accepted to MCH at Berkeley via email, so the school as a whole might be rolling out more decisions soon. Looks like you have a great shot though! Good luck!!

Has anyone been accepted to Brown MPH program or can give me more information. I just got my acceptance email today with a merit scholarship. I'm still waiting to hear back for BU and UMass. I definitely like the Brown program in community health and education. Has anyone accepted their spot for Brown?

more good news!

I just got into UC Berkeley!! Health Policy and Management! So far in at Yale, Columbia, and UCLA!

Harvard left...

More info from my last post, hopefully it'll help some of you waiting for these schools -

Accepted: UMich (1/4 scholarship), Yale, Berkeley, Iowa, UCLA
Denied: none yet
Waiting: UW, Columbia, BU; fin. aid info from other schools

I got that message from BU about the "additional information" last week and haven't written anything up yet because I haven't had a chance, but now I'm not sure if I even want to deal with it. That email, along with the ridiculously long and unnecessarily detailed financial aid application I tried to fill out the other day is making me not really want to have anything to do with them anymore. Any thoughts from people in the same boat?

Hi there! So far, you're the third that I know of from the board to be accepted. Congrats! Anthrovagabond and I were both notified a couple weeks ago. I haven't officially accepted my spot, but am most likely going to after the March 4 open house. I love the Brown program as well. I have been in touch with a few people at the school now and would be more than happy to give you what Ive learned; shoot me a private message!

Congrats, again, and good luck with the other two!

Nice one! I might try that trick as well, although it's not true in my case. The schools that have accepted me are giving me until 04/15 to decide, which is the last day Berkeley might give me a decision. Aie! At least I know everything will be settled by then, and I'll just be nerve-wracked in the meantime.

Yeah, 4/15 is standard but Columbia wanted to know by March. Good luck to you and congrats on your acceptances so far!

Just a general question, does anyone know if not filling out the FAFSA early will put you out of the running for scholarships and such after admission? I also got admitted to HSPH but I realized I forgot to file my FAFSA for the next school year (grr!).

Most schools have a deadline, like at Emory the priority deadline for submitting your FAFSA for need-based scholarships and grants is March 1, however, I've heard that the FAFSA doesn't affect merit-based scholarships, only need-based (since they have to see your income to properly allocate need-based funds) so it shouldn't put you out of the running for scholarships unless they are issued on basis of need (and you still may not be over the deadline for that if you submit soon). I'd file it as soon as you can and maybe contact the financial aid department at the schools you have been accepted to to see what your options are.

Thanks, symphonyinc11! Congrats on your Berkeley acceptance!!! I'm not sure if the latter outweighs your interest in UNC, but I did apply to MPH so (like you said) the timelines might differ. Good luck to you!
