Will there be a discussion of Dr. Vapiwala's and ADROP's position on the number of radiation oncology positions and the job market associated with this based on the recent article from Dr. Falit?

Yes, that would be very pertinent!

Unfortunately, we will not be covering this topic for this webinar. We are focusing on the application process and interviewing for medical students and residents during our summer webinar series.

Not sure why ACRO isn't talking about this topic which is more relevant to the current state of this field.

ACRO is an organization like ASTRO, ABR, ACR which has a direct incentive to increase membership. More radiation oncologists means more people paying dues, etc...
As has been commented upon in many different thread the only entity that can actually make changes is SCAROP (and they are hiding behind restriction of trade arguments).
ACGME hides behind the same excuse, although it can be argued that workforce issues are beyond their mandate.

Unlike ASTRO, ACRO is more geared towards the PP and freestanding rad onc community.

Has ACRO taken a position on workforce issues or training program growth?

Friendly reminder that the webinar is tonight at 8 PM. There will be a live Q&A session if you weren't able to submit your questions. We will also post the webinar if you are unable to attend.

Listen, it truly is very nice for both you and a program director to take time and discuss application to the field. No matter what we say or happens, applications are not going to stop and providing information, especially on your free time, is a good thing.

But having this webinar without discussing the job market is like having a discussion about politics without talking about Clinton or Trump. In other words it completely neglects the most important topic.

The number of fellowships have increased, the projections about the labor shortage have been rebutted, reversed into a labor oversupply, and published. Published resident surveys are showing a % of graduates feeling forced into fellowship and a large portion not finding a job in their 'geographic area' (that term was defined vaguely in the survey, however). Salaries are going down while student debt continues to increase. Freestanding centers are dying, and just noting the increases in academic 'satellites' can tell you where they went. There are payment models in the pilot phase that explicitly disincentive even having a referral to us as a standard of the model. We have little meaningful say in the Cancer Moonshot - and without that publicity lose public awareness. Jimmy Carter is still around because of immunotherapy AND SRS - how many of your patients were not aware of the latter?

There is no way all of this falls on either your or Dr. Vapiwala's shoulders' alone, and I am loathe to criticize you both for again setting up something on your own time to help the field. But the field is setting up new graduates, and interested medical students, to be eaten alive, and odds are it will get worse after the Medicare payment changes in 2019 (value based pay). Relegating this topic off limits is disingenuous, and the inability of anyone in the field to discuss employment frankly with people they are trying to recruit is wrong. 100% wrong, regardless of other intentions.

never mind - just saw the answer to my question... Apologies for the useless post.

How do we view the webinar?

I wasn't free when it happened live.

Again, this webinar was focused on medical students. We are currently planning a webinar to address residency expansion in the near future.

I wasn't free when it happened live.

We will post the webinar in the next day or two. We will also post a transcription of the questions at that time.

I think it's important for medical students to know what they will be signing up for in the future. A career in medicine reaches far beyond residency.

All right then, I am looking forward to this webinar being available.
That said, it would be great if a bunch of attendings on this forum would come together and do the same to address the job market situation? Probably won't have any takers on that as it may take up some of your time. But something to consider if any of you feels it is something worth discussing. And as a student, it is very worth discussing to me, but I now nothing of the subject unfortunately.

I just wanted to chime in and say thanks! That was helpful, as an M4 applying to the field.

She did briefly address the job concerns in the webinar towards the end in talking about fellowship and some of the geographic limitations with RadOnc.
