Alabama Schools Thread Part 2!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah donkey...you are right..but I am preparing for the dreadful MCAT again so not much freedom going on here!..but I guess I can enjoy myself more but it is easier said than done..I think I have the exact fear as you do...that they are going to stop accepting people just before me...

Hey bama..how do u kno that USA are going to dip into the lower third...and u were talking about USA weren't u??...

desi, i was told in late may that for some reason this year they've had a lot of people go out of state along with the movement of uab's waitlist into the mid third which pulls from south.........and not apply again yet b/c there is a chance they could actually pull from the lower third soooooo thats all i know

I have a friend who was EMSAP at south and after a conversation I had with him he told me something to the effect of that they have gone to the bottom third quite often in previous years and that this year should be no exception as far as he know so hang in there 🙂

that was good to hear.......i hope they go all the way to the last person! ha ha..........Not that it would ever happen but I wonder what they would do if they didn't have enough people on the waitlist to fill the class cuz a lot of people went to other schools

yeah bama, i second that...i hope every last person on the waitlist gets accepted...whew, the anxiety i'm feeling right now...i would never wish this feeling on anyone! good luck once again to everyone...hopefully we'll all finally meet at orientation in mobile this august 👍

soooooo, should i be calling south and writing letters so they know i want to go there or is it enough that i met with mark scott in june to talk about everything?

i don't know bama, i've been wondering the same thing (sorry i'm no help to you). is it too late for a letter of intent? is that useless at this point?

i sure don't want to annoy anyone down there, but i also want to do everything that i can. i want to go to south really, really badly. just gave me the feeling that it's the place for me when i interviewed...

how you holding up desidoctor?

I don't know much about letters of intent but from what I've heard they can't hurt you. I've always that a letter of intent could only help you and not hurt you. It might be useless but you never know.

hey guys...well...i called usa and they said that they started accepting people from the middle third...so my turn should be coming up soon...i hope...crossing my fingers...

hey pagalpagli....did u hear from usa??..r u going to uab or usa??

Donkey, you catch any of that tuna yet?

chances with a 27q and 3.62 gpa instate resident? not planning on taking the mcat again.

no beef in the box yet, bama, but we did at least see a few yellowfins out at the rigs a couple weeks ago. they never cease to amaze me; they truly are some elusive beasts. i sometimes wonder if the yellows we have caught in the past are merely figments of my imagination. i think our biggest problem with tuna fishing is trying to target them on day trips; it is such a gamble. it is becoming apparent to me (after 10 rig trips and only bringing home the beef 3 times) that overnight trips are the only real way to have a good chance to get at 'em. time to man up and take the center console for a spend the night party out at the rigs; that is, if i can afford to fill the boat up with gas. 👎

the boss let me take off this past monday and tuesday, so we ran out to the elbow, which is currently the only place within 100 miles with fishable water. we had a really awesome day. got a slob of a wahoo and hooked up a white marlin that put on a good show for about 5 minutes before saying bye-bye. we saw a lot of small tunas busting bait all over the place, which fooled us into thinking that we might actually have a slight chance to run into some yellowfins at some point. just before pointing the boat back north, we had our "yellowfin" hit. it peeled off about 200yds of line and really felt like a nice 40-50 pounder to me. it ended up just being a huge skipjack, which made me feel like a real pansy. still pretty cool, though.

i think the best part about the trip was the world famous hotdogs we ate at the Dew Drop Inn in Mobile. really, really incredible. i might have problems staying away from that place if i ever do get into south.

you having a good summer, besides the whole, waisting away on the alternate list, thing?

I just found out my score from my first mcat today and I received a 27q. My gpa is like a 3.62. I am a resident of AL. Do I have a chance at south or uab? Will I likely get an interview? Would I likely be accepted or rather waitlisted? Thanks for the input.

welcome, rk. i'm sure you probably know the averages for uab and usa; ~30 mcat and ~3.7-3.8 gpa. that being said, however, you are definitely competitive in those categories. there are plenty of people who have been accepted outright to both schools with those stats.

it's hard to give you a real answer here, as there are so many factors that are taken into consideration. i absolutely would think you should get an interview at both places with your gpa and mcat. if you've got solid extracurriculars and good clinical experiences to talk about in your interviews, then that should put you in the "very competitive" category.

good luck to you, i hope it all works out. have you already submitted your amcas? keep us posted 👍

rk14,

I was recently accepted at UAB from the middle third of the waiting list my stats were a 27Q, 3.8GPA, and some extra curricular stuff. I didn't have a lot of shadowing which is one thing that they wanted. I would say that you have a shot and if you have good extras then a good shot. I don't know if you were planning on taking the MCAT again this summer but if you could boost your score 2-3 points would certainly help you out. Good luck to you!

is there rolling admissions for south and uab? doesnt getting in the application significantly early help your chances of admission?

whoa,

was that your first time applying to med school? when did you find out?

rk14, read my mdapps. I had a 27Q mcat and a 3.8ish gpa with 3.94 bcpm. I got in early March at UAB.

I did a lot of research, shadowing/volunteering with doctors and I've worked in a hospital for a long time. If any of that describes you, then you have a shot. The 27 isn't great but it is doable. Make sure you are prepped for your interviews when you get them and write solid essays. Get help doing both, you'll need someone serious to interview you and someone who is definitely a good writer and knows what is appropriate for the essays. At my school my pre-med advisor did a mock interview with us as well as offering to read our personal statements and secondary essays.

whoa,

was that your first time applying to med school? when did you find out?

Yea that was my first time applying and I found out at the end of May. I know everyone says that applying early is very important but I know a lot of people who applied late including myself. My secondary wasn't complete until the final day of the deadline and I know a number of people who were accepted to did the same thing so while I think applying early is beneficial I don't think it's a must. I took my MCAT the last date offered in August I believe or very close to it.

Wondering if anyone could give me input as to whether or not to give UAB a shot on my list of schools as an OOS applicant. Thanks in advance...

Well UAB does accept out of state students, but to answer your question some stats might help

I can't help but feel your pain reading some of these posts. I just finished my first year at UASOM, but you're bringing back some pre-admission anxiety I'd forgotten. Just wanted to say best of luck to all of you. In my class, one student got a call the first day of orientation saying that he'd been accepted but that he had to be in Bham the next day. So hang in there.

appreciate it hamminitup! congrats on finishing your first year 👍

Are there particular things that the Alabama schools are looking for from OOS applicants? I see that they don't accept very many each year. I would like to apply, but I don't know if it would be a waste of my time and money.

>3.5 / 30, some connection to Alabama.

Remember that a lot of OOS are MD/PhD students who don't have to have any connection to Alabama and are treated separately from the regular pool.

<--- MDApps

oh sorry man I did not see that. You have some great extras but with those stats it would be cutting it close to getting an instate bid. Like as some people have said for an OOS they want at least a 3.5GPA and higher than a 30MCAT. I do not think it would be worth it for you to apply to UAB as an OOS

could someone please comment on my stats as well. I know that they are pretty good, but I don't really have a connection to Alabama. Is it worth me applying as an MD only applicant?

Hey UTnut, sorry for not replying. I'm not really an expert, so I was just waiting for someone else to jump in. I hate telling someone whether or not to apply somewhere, because, again I really do not know exactly what the adcoms are thinking...I sure wish I did though.

With that out of the way, you have awesome stats, the kind of stats that I would think you would need to have a shot as an out of stater. From what I've seen in the MSAR, UAB seems to take more out of state students than does USA. Not having any ties to the state surely will not help you, but I'm not sure as to how much (if at all) it may hurt you.

I apologize for not being much of a help here, hopefully someone a bit more knowledgeable on the subject will offer their wisdom. Good luck to you in whatever you decide 👍

Thanks donkey, I appreciate your help. I think that I will probably apply to both Alabama schools. Good luck to everyone!

so, I wonder how many of the mid-third got in.......anybody have any news?

sunshine, maybe your acceptance is in the mail and I HOPE that what you heard is true, whoa!

p.s. Desi, have you heard anything?

Yep, I didnt think I would be saying this but I got into USA college of medicine...I am very happy and can't believe it happened!! 😀
Donkey and bama ....hang it there...i am sure it will happen to you guys too!!...Good luck!!👍

Congratulations desidoctor!!! That is AWESOME!! I'm really happy for you, you deserve it!!

Yeah, i'm trying to hang in there. It does feel really good knowing that there is only one more month of waiting for the final news, be it good or bad...these last 3 months of hanging out on the waitlist have seemed like an eternity.

Congrats again, desidoctor! Now you can actually enjoy this last month of summer! :hardy:

Wooooo hoooooo! Congrats! When did you find out?

Thank You soo much guys....I found out about a week ago...i was very excited when i heard it and yep I can enjoy my last month of freedom!

I withdrew my application from USA today...I was holding out to hear from them but I think UAB is where I need to be next year. I was in the middle third, and even though I wasn't accepted, maybe it'll speed up ya'll getting in. I really hope ya'll get in soon, try to keep your mind off of it (even though it's impossible).

GOOD LUCK

Good luck at UAB Loh! I wonder how many mid-thirds haven't heard anything yet.......hopefully, their almost to the lower.....anybody have any more info?

Hey guys! If you are going to south in the fall then join this group on facebook so everybody can get know each other:

University of South Alabama College of Medicine Class of 2012

hmmmm....you think maybe if i go ahead and join the facebook group, the adcom at south will feel obligated to let me in?

ha ha, ya..........thats my plan too.......I called mark scott today to see what he thought about my spot compared to waitlist mvmnt and he told me to call back next Monday cuz he still wasn't sure.......i guess they're still waiting to hear back from people....

hey guys, just letting you know I was in the bottom third at usa and I just got a call from mark scott, so hopefully yalls time is coming soon!

i got in to South!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited!

my god, i just got accepted too!! i honestly cannot believe it!! congrats to everyone!!

yaay! congrats, everybody........I honestly cannot believe we got in off the bottom third...

i know bama...i mailed in my pre-health form today and was about to schedule my interview and get things ready to apply again. i really thought that it was hopeless at this point...so i wonder how many of us got in off the bottom third?

Hey guys, congratulations on your acceptances! After reading your posts, I called Mark and asked him if they were pulling people from the lower third because I am waiting and I'm in the middle third. I haven't been called yet so I was confused. He said that "nobody from the lower third has been called yet. There hasn't been any movement this week."

These stories are conflicting and I don't know what is going. Does anyone know what is going on with South's waitlist?

Hey Donkey, i saw you mentioned chris hutt earlier......so you graduated from bama?
